Shousei sat furiously at a table, surrounded by stacks of books.
It wasn't that Shousei himself was furious, or even mildly peeved; in fact, he was completely calm; but his rigid posture, the small movements as he turned each page, and the unblinking gaze he kept as he scribbled neatly into his notebooks suggested a quiet and diabolical intensity to the boy, as if he were constantly plotting how best to raze the landscape to the ground in order to build a nice meditation garden upon the bones of the innocent.
In truth, he simply meant to spend the evening in the library finishing his essay for English Literature, double-checking it, and translating it into Mandarin for practice before typing it up. If he had time later, perhaps he would relax, but at the moment there was so little to do other than schoolwork he felt there would be no point. At Dunehelden, he had no younger siblings to watch, no chores to do, no parents to talk to, and no friends or acquaintances to demand his time. True, there was an entire world of magic that had somehow escaped his attention over most of his life, but he was reasonably certain he only cared about the parts that were keeping him from dying.
He shut his book with a finger-flick, opened another, and continued writing.

Kyo entered the library on silent feet, his eyes sweeping left and right for someone to ask for directions. Kazari had told him to steer clear of the librarian unless he was with her-- either Kazari had no faith in him, or the "Fable" she had mentioned was really bad enough to warrant a Kazari-shield.
He spotted the nearest student-- one sitting at a table, surrounded by books-- and approached.
"Hey," he said, nodding his head in greeting. "Can you tell me what's where?"

Shousei looked up at the other boy with a blank expression, then back at his paper, without ever ceasing his scribbles.
"Possibly. What are you looking for?"

"Something interesting," Kyo answered, leaning on the table, one hand splayed on the tabletop. "A friend of mine mentioned a pretty decent collection of Poe. Don't know where it is, though."

"Interesting," Shousei repeated, and sat his pencil down. He didn't recognize the name offhand, but he could intuit that it was fiction. He looked behind him and thought.
"I suppose it would be in the back, near the computers. Most of fiction is there; it's too bad there isn't more organization."

Natsu was a little tired but then again she wasn't used to carrying ALL her books. Dou-chan usually carried some of them for her. She lugged her books to the nearest table that had piles of books on it already.
"Now time to do some studying," she mumbled to herself as she flopped her own stack of books on the table. She hummed quietly as she thought, "What to start with first . . . " She pulled her English book off the top of her tower of books and gently flipped it open.

Shousei glanced up when the girl came over to his table. He didn't quite mind someone sitting by him; it wasn't the optimum scenario, but he could ignore them well enough.
Then, however, the girl started mumbling to herself. In English. It was both rude and impossible to ignore, as he couldn't stop himself from straining to hear and understand it.
He sat up straight, fixing her with a calm look, and cleared his throat.

Natsu heard a coughing sound. Her head perked up from her studies and surveyed her surroundings. Then her eyes met Shousei's. She slumped in her chair a little bit and her eyes got a little wider in shock, she didn't realize there had been anyone there.
"O-oh, um, hi," Natsu said her small voice barely above a whisper, "I-I didn't see you there." She chewed on her pink lower lip a little bit out of nervousness.

Shousei's eyes widened slightly in response, and he completely lost his train of thought; his mouth opened slightly, but what had he been about to say? His right eyebrow twitched slightly.
"You," he began awkwardly, after maybe a minute of staring. "I like your hair."
That must have been it. Wait, no.

Natsu perked back up in her chair at the complement. Now that the strange calculating look had left his eyes, the boy was actually quite pretty.
Natsu absentmindedly twirled a small curl of her hair around her index finger. "Th-thank you," she spoke in a quiet voice. "Ummm," she looked up at the boy and asked, "A-am I bothering you?"

He needed to study. He really needed to study.
Her hair had tiny curls in it, and she would not stop twirling, blast her.
"Ah, no." Shousei swallowed. "Sorry. Well- the humming." He glanced around, looking for something to change the subject to. "What are you reading?" he said quickly.

Natsu tilted her head slightly to one side. He wasn't saying something . . . Natsu wondered what it was. "Was my humming bothering you?" she asked quietly, "I could stop."
"Umm, I'm reading my English book," she held up the book for him to read, "I have to do a short essay on the play 'A Doll's house'." She nibbled on her lip again, "Wh-what are you reading?"

Shousei gave up.
"I don't want to insult you. You have interrupted me from my studying, but I don't mind so much." There would be time for studying later, if necessary. It's not like he needed to rewrite his essay. "I picked something called The Crucible, and I've been reading discussions of the events it was based on."

Natsu tilted her head a little more so it now rested on her right shoulder. "'The Crusible'? Isn't that a kind of morbid play?" she asked her eyes narrowing a little bit in pondering, "I haven't read it yet. Dou-chan said it would give me nightmares."

Shousei pursed his lips for a moment. "I suppose; it's important, though. What's yours about?"

Natsu sat up straight in her chair, clasped her hands in her lap. "It's about how men control women, basically," Natsu replied matter of factly, "Well, the husband treats the wife like she can't do anything, and continues to demean her. He even gets mad at him when she makes a decision to save his life! He keeps on trying to control her until she leaves."
She paused and looked down a little at the book that she had placed back on the table in front of her. "It's actually quite sad," she whispered.

He blinked slowly. One finger reached out and rolled his pencil back and forth. "That sounds like a fruitful topic of inquiry as well."
He paused. "Ah, my name is Yamazaki Shousei. It's nice to meet you."

"Oh," Natsu said slightly taken aback by the random introduction. "I'm Natsuritcha Ueraka," she said with a charming smile that crinkled her eyes at the corners, "But you can call me Natsu, everyone does." She held out her hand to Shousei, "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Shousei shook her hand; a small, awkward smile twitched on his lips.
"Natsu," he repeated, nodding. "Ah. Yes, nice to meet you."
He had no idea what to do next.

Natsu looked at the pile of books that surrounded Shousei and slowly tilted her head. "Shousei-san, what ARE you studying?" she asked not removing her eyes from the books. "You must be studying a lot more than just English homework . . . that's a ton of books . . ." she said under her breath.
Then suddenly her eyes lit up, maybe she'd found one of her solutions! "Hey, Shousei-san," she asked excitedly, "Y-you're smart, right?" She smiled up at him brightly, "Are you any good at math or biology?"

He felt a little awkward with the way she talked about his books, and he wasn't sure why.
Ah, now that was a familiar look. Much better. "I am, though I'm not familiar with the biology curriculum here. Would you like help with something?"

Natsu nodded so her hair bounced around her face. "Yes," she said, "We're going through . . ." She paused, she wasn't exactly sure what it was. "Here," she said turning to the propper page and showing it to Shousei. "I don't understand all the big words about the eco-system-ah-meh-jiggies. I know they are were animals live and stuff. . . but I'm not good with the details.
"I-if it's not too much trouble," she said a little bit more timmidly, "I could really use some guidance."

Shousei blinked. This... might take a while.
"Uhm. All right." He looked over the page, flipping around in the chapter a bit to get the context. It seemed very simple, but it was probably an intro class. "Do you have class notes?"

"Yes I do!!" Natsu said as she pulled a pale blue notebook out of her bag by the side of her chair. She flipped to the proper page and looked up at Shousei with a smile. "I even color coded it, see?" She pointed to the page with 23 different colors of writing.

Shousei stared with a slightly glazed look. "Yes. Such nice colors." What.
He shook his head slightly to clear it, then began flipping through her... extensive notes... in an effort to understand what it was she didn't get.
"Why don't we start from the top? This section is about teaching you the ways in which creatures interact, and the terminology for it. So, what do you know about how creatures interact?"
