"We could regale my mother with anecdotes of your childhood in Texas and see how long it takes her to call Veronique and demand to know why she's letting commoners in a prestigious prep school," Blaise suggested, lying back on the bed.
"I seriously had to convince her that the reason she'd never heard of Dunehelden was because it was so prestigious, the only people that knew about it were people that had been going there for generations and it was some sort of great honor that I was invited." He snorted. "My father didn't really care, as long as it was a boarding school."
He was quiet for a moment, staring up at the ceiling. "You know, I don't think you've said much about your family to me. I know you have a step-family, but that's about it."

Rhys' jaw dropped. "You told her- wow. That's- wow. That's a good lie."
He shrugged. "Yeah, guess I haven't. Why? Is there something you wanna know?"

Blaise shrugged. "I don't know, just...what's your family like. Siblings, parents that are actually around, a mother that actually cooks for you. All that."

"Heh!" Rhys grinned. "Yeah- yeah, all right, I'll tell you about my parents. Uh, can you move over, let me sit against something? This might take a while." He moved up against the headboard, leaning against a pillow.
"My mom is... well, was, I guess, a crack whore. There's probably a better term for it, I don't know what the hell she did exactly, but I don't give a goddamn." He licked his lips and continued. "No idea who my dad is, could be anybody. Lived in a, I don't know, laundry basket or somethin' until I was three or four, then she gave me to my grandparents, or they took me, one. Lived in Texas, like I told you, pretty much the middle of nowhere; my grandparents... I don't know what the hell they wanted, except for me to not be like my mom. I guess that's about it."
He took a breath and started again. "Then my mom came back- well. This time she seemed to mean it. Said she had a place in Philadelphia. Dated some guy. Had fun. Met him, met Kathy and Reed. They were... well, she married him, and then we lived there. I was, uh," he did some math in his head, "twelve then. Four years, then one night we were home alone and nearly died. So I got sent to Dunehelden."
"And that's my life story." He grinned at Blaise, though he was far from happy.

Blaise watched him silently, reacting very little to what Rhys said. What was he supposed to say? That was...Blaise couldn't even comprehend that.
"Sorry," he murmured. "That...really sucks."

Rhys' grin dropped, and he scratched his shoulders.
"Uh. Sorry- too much?"

Blaise shook his head. "No, it's not, I just..." He sighed. He really had no idea how to respond, and he couldn't even imagine what he must have...god damn it.
Blaise reached over and hugged Rhys around the shoulders.

Rhys flinched, but he didn't pull away. He sat there still as a log, trying to figure out what the hell sort of hug this was supposed to be and what the hell he was supposed to do about it.
Just as Blaise moved away, he made his decision and hugged him back, just for a second, then pulled back, scooched over again a little, and looked at the window.

Blaise thought for a moment, his legs dangling off the side of the bed. "Why don't we go outside?" he suggested, after a moment. "You can go run around and climb trees, or whatever you want to do."

Rhys shrugged; he thought about it for a moment, then nodded. "Sure. I need to get to sleep tonight; tiring myself out might help."
