Vincent laughed, but made no comment. Let the boy have his fun, he wasn't harming anyone. It was odd to see him so perky and chipper now, so soon after he had played that strange, sad song...
"I must wonder," Vincent spoke up, his face slowly sobering, "why the music you played was so unusually sad. You're always so cheerful and mischievous. What was on your mind?"

Korlian froze, and looked at him with a slightly shocked look, then his expression became almost as melancholy as his song.
"Wouldn't you be sad if you knew you'd lost most of yourself? And that it was your own family that did it to you?" he asked him softly, climbing down to look Vincent clearly in the eye. There was not quite tears in his eyes, but there was a great pain. "And I've lost more. I know I used to remember more than I do now... but it's gone. And I have few friends here. You, and your daughter... and Ariel's afraid of me. She... has good reason, but... I don't like seeing it in her eyes, so I leave her alone.
"People don't like me here, but I'm safer here than anywhere else. And I'm not even able to safely leave the grounds. The Unseelie would tear me apart like this. Wouldn't you be sad?"

Vincent looked at Korlian in, he had to admit, surprise as well as compassion and sympathy. This was a side of Korlian he had never seen before, and it was an all too real and poignant side to boot. The pain in his face was heartbreaking.
"Of course I'd be sad," Vincent answered him quietly, not without awkwardness. "I'm sorry, Korlian -- I had no idea that it was your own family who did this to you. I can't imagine losing so much."
He really had no idea what else to say to that, and so he said nothing more. What could he say that wouldn't ring hollow? He had no inkling of Korlian's pain, no way to share in his misery. That was probably why Korlian spent so much time alone... because he was all but completely alone in his pain. Only his brother would understand it, but the two of them seemed to barely get along together as it was. Who then could Korlian turn to?

Korlian shrugged, "Well, think about it. Only the very most powerful Fae would be able to seal my brother and myself. We are princes... that means that our parents are the rulers of the Fae, and you become a ruler by being the most powerful. My parents, and Lhachlhass' queen had to work together to bind us."
Shaking his head, Korlian shrugged again and climbed back into the tree. "But family means little to the Fae. Even to me, save Lhachlhass. The fact that we're even able to be put in the same room without tearing each other apart is evidence of that."
He settled himself on a branch, looking up at the sky, then pulled out his pipes again. "The loss of my 'family' means little, really. But I thought that might help you understand the pain. It's losing myself, everything that I am, that is so painful. Not that it was my family that did this to me. The only way that would have been painful was if Lhachlhass had helped."

Vincent nodded slowly, watching Korlian in silence. Good grief, this was awkward.
"I know I can't really sympathize with you on any meaningful level," he replied after a moment. "There is much that I don't understand about your kind, and I know that. I can't really fathom how people would do this sort of thing to their own family. But I am truly sorry for your pain."

Korlian leaned back... and looked Vincent in the eye while hanging upside down again. "Perhaps if you realize that 'family' is not a word in our language, it might help that. I don't mean that entirely literally, but in the racial... way of thinking, it is not a word that exists. Family is no different from friend, and is very often foe. You probably care more for me than my parents did the moment I was mature. There is still the desire to protect children... that is, perhaps, part of why the Fae steal human children. Our own children are rare...
And rarely as comely as I am," he grinned widely, then shrugged, his expression somewhat serious again. "Perhaps... imagine losing Ariel, and Professor Harrows, and any memory of them... but know you've lost it. Maybe that would explain my pain. Or, and your magic which is already so much a part of you, and the memory of that but knowing you had something that made you special even among those who were special."

Vincent nodded, feeling a chill run down his spine at the thought of losing his loved ones, as well as all of his memories of them. Losing those he loved -- even one of them -- was his very worst fear, and to not even have memories of the lost ones would be nothing short of devastating. It reminded him vaguely of a film he'd seen once that he couldn't recall the name of... but it would be even more horrible in real life, he was certain.
"Now I think I understand better," he said softly, trying to banish horrible images from his mind. Ariel and Diana's likenesses fading out of photographs like they had never existed... an empty house filled with the echoes of laughter... faces of the loved ones he thought he knew, but could no longer put names to...
Another chill ran through him, and he mentally shook himself even as he tried to suppress his body's all-over shudder. Steady on, Vincent.

Korlian just looked at him for a while, still hanging upside down. He nodded slowly, and climbed back up. "Well, at least I figured out how to make it make sense to you."
He laid back on the branch and lifted his pipes again. The song, as eerie and haunting as before, floated out, but without the summoning that had brought Vincent over to him. He leaned over, and looked at him. "No one is going to do that to YOU, you know... No need to be so shaky."
He grinned, then started playing again. For some reason, he felt like singing, but he couldn't play and sing at the same time, so he just kept playing. Maybe he would later.

Vincent nodded, slowly relaxing again. He knew he had no reason to fear it happening to him, as Korlian had said, but it was still a chilling idea.
He stood back, watching Korlian and listening to him play that same melancholy tune as before, without the added summons. He felt a lot better now that Korlian didn't seem utterly terrifed of him; it had been unnerving seeing the boy bolt in fear at so much as a look from him.
"Well, I'm glad we're on speaking terms again," he said lightly.

Korlian waved at him, interrupting his music for just a moment. He immediately picked up where he had left off, the song growing somehow hopeful. Then he broke off and hung upside down again. The boy had an odd fascination with looking at the world in odd ways.
"I must admit I find your interest in me probably unhealthy, but I enjoy having someone else to talk to as well. Fare thee well. We will meet again. This is after all, a rather small school."
He grinned, pulled himself back into the tree, and started to play again. This was a bright infectious tune, yet still managed to be eerie and disturbing.

"Farewell," Vincent replied with a smile, grinning at the sight of Korlian hanging upside-down again.
When Korlian began to play again, Vincent took that as his cue to leave, and he turned and headed back into the school, humming along with the catchy tune Korlian was playing. What an unusual child.
