Diana poked her head into the mess hall and glanced around, hoping to catch a glimpse of Aritha. Spotting what she hoped to be the pretty blonde vampire sitting at a table across the room, Diana hurried toward her, hoping she was approaching the right person. It would be embarrassing if she was wrong.
Oh, yes, it was definitely her. A gust of air brought the vampire's scent right to Diana's nose as she came closer. Excellent.

Aritha heard a footstep behind her and looked up from her sketch, then smiled brightly at Diana. "Professor Harrows!"
Then she paused and flushed. "...You should sit down if you wanted to talk to me. I know you can read lips, but I don't know any sign language at all."

Diana smiled and nodded, taking a seat next to Aritha. Vincent had informed her that Aritha knew no sign language, so Diana had come prepared with a notepad and pencil. She opened the notepad and wrote quickly and clearly.
I heard you enjoy designing clothes, so I was wondering if you'd like to help me design my wedding gown and the dresses for my bridesmaids.
And one bridesman, she added to herself, thinking of Jason and grinning as she held the paper out for Aritha to read.

Aritha read the note quickly, then her eyes lit up. She clasped her hands in front of her and nodded rapidly. Forcing herself to calm down, she managed to reply slowly enough that Diana could read her lips. "I would be honored, Professor," she beamed.

Diana's grin widened at Aritha's enthusiastic reply, and she wrote a response underneath her initial request.
Thank you so much! I'd like to get started soon, since we only have a little over two months before the wedding, but I'm sure we'll manage to finish in time.

Aritha nodded, and pulled a piece of paper over. She looked closely at Diana, then bit her lip a little. "Professor... Could you stand up please?"
She smiled, "I need measurements. Did you have any ideas of what you wanted?"

Diana willingly obliged, standing up to let Aritha measure her. I was thinking something traditional, maybe with a floral pattern somewhere. I'm leaning toward something strapless, with a floor-length skirt.[/color]

"I'm sorry, you'll have to write that out, Professor. The extent of my sign language is please and thank you," Aritha smiled, making very sure Diana could read her lips. She looked over Diana quickly, then wrote her measurements quickly. She looked up again.
"Alright... obviously we're going to want to get actual measurements later, but that will give me a starting point," she beamed, gesturing for Diana to sit down again. "Thank you."

Diana blinked and blushed a bit, then smacked the heel of her palm lightly against her head in the sign for stupid.
Sitting down again, she picked up her pencil and wrote out the basics of what she had signed. Something traditional, with a floral print somewhere. Strapless, with a floor-length skirt. White fabric, she added after a pause. It's my first wedding.

Aritha grinned, "It would have been white anyway, unless you decided otherwise. It's traditional, after all. I can read upside down, you do not have to hold it up. Would it be easier if I wrote my replies as well?"
While watching for the reply, Aritha quickly started on a rough sketch. First, a model to actually draw the dress on, then beginning to sketch out the dress, first simply giving it a form to work with.

Speak all you like. It takes less time. Diana smiled as she wrote in reply. And it's more natural for you.
She watched appreciatively as Aritha began sketching the dress, content just to watch it taking shape on the page. The past few days since the proposal had seemed like a dream; it seemed much more real to her now that plans were being made, and things were starting to solidify. It would get better and better as they neared the wedding date.
She was silent for a while, thinking again. She put pencil to paper again and wrote out her thoughts for Aritha to see.
The bridesmaids' dresses should match mine somewhat, in shape at least. They'll be a lot simpler (plainer?) than mine. For the color, I was thinking of a dark blue. I'm not sure of the exact shade yet.

Aritha looked at it and nodded. "I think we can work on the shade in a bit. After all, I'm going to have to go fabric shopping."
She beamed at Diana. "If possibly, I'd love to get you to come with me. Because it's your special day, after all. And everyone knows it's all about the bride."

Diana laughed and nodded. I'd love to come with you. We'll have to set a date. Heaven knows Vincent and I (as well as everyone else involved) will be horribly busy until the wedding, with that on top of our duties as professors and students.

Aritha nodded, grinning at the professor. "We will. Maybe we can get some others to come with us and use it as a day to de-stress from all the running around all of us are going to be doing. Make a whole Saturday out of it. Heaven knows we're all going to need it."

Diana grinned back. Too true. I love that idea. Would this coming Saturday work? We don't have a lot of time to waste; the wedding is in mid-May. I just hope that will be enough time to get everything done. But if everyone gets others involved, it should go much more quickkly. Many hands make light work.

Aritha shrugged, "I don't have anything planned, so it ought to. I'm at the very least going to drag my roommate, Zeph and Jason into helping me. And I do have the advantage of not needing sleep, so Jo and I can work at nights when everyone else is asleep."
She turned to her sketch, adding the lightly jagged train, rather than a perfectly smooth curve, then added a single vine of flowers that trailed from the hem at about the right leg, up in a slightly twisting path to spread across the bodice of the dress, mostly the left side. This she shaded lightly, to show that it was made of beads and embroidery, but still the silvery-white of a traditional dress.
The veil too had light beading, though none that would prove irritating in wearing it. Aritha glanced at Diana for approval.

Diana smiled and nodded. Zeph and Jason are going to be involved anyway; they're going to be a groomsman and bridesman, respectively.
She looked over the sketch, nodding in approval and giving Aritha a thumbs-up. Beautiful!

Aritha beamed at her, and giggled. "Jason is going to be fun fitting into a strapless dress. I think I'll have to get some of those clear straps to hold it up. Oh! How many bridesmaids? And who? I can get an estimate on the amount of cloth I need just knowing who I need to fit."

Diana grinned. Five in all, including the maid of honor. There's Ariel Hawk, Jason, Natalie Burns, Ellie and Rivienne. We don't have to worry about Vincent and the groomsmen's outfits; Vincent is recruiting Jaymie Elderton to help with that.

Aritha smiled, "I've always been better with dresses anyway. Don't tell Rudeth that. He'd either not believe you or not let me make him clothes anymore. And that would be a tragedy."
She wrote a quick list on another sheet, making a note to speak with each of them. It would give her a moment to size them up, and have a generous estimate on how much cloth she was going to need.

Diana grinned and nodded, pressing her forefinger to her lips with a nod of acquiescence, then lowering her hand and writing again. That would be a tragedy. Almost as bad as, say, Vincent losing his voice. His voice is everything to him, nowadays more than ever since he became a mage.

Aritha paused and looked thoughtful. "I don't know how I would react. Losing my voice, or my sight or hearing. I think it would be sight or touch that would distress me the most. You can't create clothing if you can't see, and it's not very safe if you can't feel."
She grinned and giggled, "Though I can see images of me sewing my fingers into what I was making like the Grinch and not noticing."

Diana chuckled softly.
For me, I think it would be losing either my sight or smell that would upset me the most. I rely a lot on my eyes and nose in lieu of my hearing, which I never had to begin with. And I'm glad it was that way, rather than losing my hearing later in life. You can't really miss something you never had.

Aritha tilted her head. "No... but you can regret it. Don't they have... oh."
She paused and shook her head. "Never mind. Silver's a good conductor, they'd probably use that. And I don't remember how that works with people who were born without hearing..."
Then she smiled, "Because, I'm certain you've thought of that any number of times. Cochlear implants, I mean."
Scowling, Aritha facepalmed. "Why on earth did I change the subject to this?"

Diana nodded, smiling. I've thought of that a million times. I can't imagine what it would be like to hear... I think I'd be overwhelmed, at least at first, if I did somehow gain the ability. Any noise, no matter how small, would be loud after so long living in silence. I'm not sure how I'd handle it. I think in my case, it's better to leave things as they are.
She turned a page in her notebook once Aritha was done reading. Looks like we've gotten a bit sidetracked. Is there anything else I can help you with about the dresses right now?
