Jason nodded without speaking, tackling the king for a third time, and failing miserably. The fourth attempt was no better. Neither was the fifth, or the sixth.
By the ninth try, pixel-Jason finally stood triumphant over the dead king, doing a little victory dance. Jason grinned and watched him for a few seconds, then moved him onward, eager to find a saving point so he wouldn't have to struggle through that again.
Ooh, right, there was supposed to be cake. Jason quickly moved his character back to grab that, then moved on again. Soon he'd meet the monster that would give him the apple and the key.

Zephyros sighed and moved forward with his game, fighting through the souls again and talking to the ferryman. This time, he did the wise thing and paid, which took him across the river Styx and into the main part of Hades. The real Zephyros shivered worse than the pixellated one, and had to pause the game again and covered his face.
"I don't like this level," he mumbled through his fingers, shivering again.

Jason continued carefully on with his part of the game, pausing right before meeting his next monster and looking over at Zeph in concern. He was shivering and covering his face with his hands.
"What's wrong with it?" Jason wondered. "Is Hades frightening?"

Zephyros put his head on Jason's shoulder. "I might make jokes about it, but I know how close I came. I don't like this level."
He shivered for another moment, then took a deep breath and unpaused the game. "I'm going to do my best to breeze through this one... I don't want to play in here any longer than I have to."
He fed the cake to Kerberos, the three-heads as well as the mane of snakes fighting over the pastry while Pixellated-Zeph slipped past. Surrounded by souls, some more nebulous than others, Pixellated-Zeph slowly worked his way through to the throneroom.
At this point, Zephyros had to pause again and shivered again.

Jason put an arm around Zeph and hugged him briefly. "You'll be okay. It's just a game."
He kissed his boyfriend's cheek and unpaused his own game, working his way toward where his next monster would lunge at him. When the monster appeared, pixel-Jason fought it vigorously, defeating it on only the second attempt. "I think I'm getting the hang of this."
He looked around, spotting the apple and the key and moving to pick them up. "Ooh, what does the apple do?"

"Yeah, I know but..." Zeph shivered again and continued on. He couldn't let Jason catch up, after all. Hades, who merely looked like a tall severe man with a black beard and his very beautiful wife Persephone. She persuaded Hades to allow Zeph to do something for him to get the right to save Orpheus' girl, and Zephyros growled under his breath.
The quest was easy, and Zephyros ran through it quickly. He paused for a second and glanced at Jason. "I'm not sure yet, I haven't used it yet. But I'll bet I need to give it to whichever of Athena, Aphrodite, or Hera that'll help me the most. Or possibly to Eris, if I'm going to help start the Trojan War."
It didn't take him long to work his way through Hades' quest, and bring Orpheus' girl back out. Zephyros jumped when he seemed to be hunted down, then blinked when a soul offered him a pomegranate. He was asked if he wanted to eat it, and was given two options. Eat it, or throw it. Zeph didn't even hesitate- he threw it. The fruit went sailing, and suddenly he was outside the cave where he'd fought the chimera with an achievement thing rising over his head that basically said he'd just outwitted the gods.
"Oh crap. I think I might be in trouble now."

Jason continued on his own path, finding the door that Professor Hawk had pointed out to Zeph earlier, and hesitating for a moment. There was something either important or bad about this door. Oh, yes -- the centaur was behind it. Scheisse.
Pixel-Jason opened the door and was flung backward as pixel-Zeph had been. Nessus charged out, huge and furious. Pixel-Jason recovered quickly and fought him off, not without difficulty. It took two tries before Nessus fell, and pixel-Jason struck a victorious Captain Morgan pose.
"Wunderbar," Jason laughed, moving pixel-Jason away from the fallen centaur. Now to head on to Hades. After this weird cutscene in Japanese.

Zeph chuckled, "Nice. Something fun about that pose, I'm not sure why."
The next few encounters were typical monsters, until Pixellated-Zeph suddenly ran across a person in a cloak. He paused... he'd run across a few monsters that looked like this, but they'd attacked him almost before he'd seen them. This one just... stood there. Slowly creeping forward, the woman stopped him and asked him if he was the hero she'd been hearing about. Confused, Zeph looked at his possible responses.
"Yes, no, or what have you heard? Alright... what have you heard?" Apparently he was a bigger hero than he thought, and she asked him again. "Yes, I'm that hero. Whaddya want, and which deity are you?"
The figure smiled, and suddenly the screen was full of clouds. Zeph yelped and blinked, then sighed. Slowly the clouds faded and a huge mountain with a golden palace appeared before him. "Oh well... I guess that's how you get on Olympos."

Jason paused his game for a bit and interestedly watched pixel-Zeph's encounter with the cloaked figure. He grinned when a mass of clouds appeared on the screen, followed by a golden palace on a mountaintop. "Looks that way, doesn't it?"
Unpausing his game, he continued on his way. He has passed the souls and the ferryman, and was now in the midst of Persephone's quest. He finished it quickly and moved on through Hades', remembering to throw away the pomegranate rather than eat it. He grinned as he was informed that he'd outwitted the gods.
"I'm catching up to you, Zeph," he laughed.
