Valérian turned and smiled a little, looking at the very nervous young man... Who was taller than him. Of COURSE he was taller than Valérian, everyone was. Except those two odd freshmen. He sat by Vincent, beginning to feel his stomach twist. He hadn't felt ill this often since he'd been... well, human. Now, whether this was a bad thing or indifferent was the question.

Rudy finished chugging the milk and dropped the plastic cup into the garbage can, then wiped his mouth on his sleeve. He turned first to Ian grinning and offering his hand to the other young man.
"I don't think I've seen you around much," he commented. "Rudeth Volkova, by the way, but everyone calls me Rudy."
He glanced slightly to the side, catching sight of Natalie. A broad grin spread spread across his face. "And of course, one as lovely as you must be trying out for the lead," he remarked smoothly. "Any Victorian lady would be envious."

Vincent glanced over at Rudy, hearing the tone of his voice and calling him out on it. "That's my niece you're flattering, young man. I happen to know what she does to boys like you who try making passes at her. It can only end in tears."
He winked at Natalie, hoping she'd appreciate that. He didn't want to mention outright that she was taken, given that Ian was standing beside her, and he knew they both knew Vincent was sworn to secrecy.

Ian shook Rudy's hand limply, looking at the other boy's feet. "Like I said... I'm... er... I'm Ian. Nice to meet you..."
He could feel his ears burning. A desire to lash out and defend Natalie against Rudy's advances welled up inside him. It wasn't Rudy's fault - nobody except Ian and Vincent knew about Ian's feelings for Natalie. That's why he was grateful when Vincent stepped in... it saved him the trouble.

Natalie smirked at the sight of Ian's ears glowing red. The boy wasn't very good at hiding his emotions. Still smirking, she turned back to Rudy.
"Thank you for the compliment, Rudy." She said, her grin spreading. "But I wouldn't get any ideas. The last person to try what you're doing ended up... badly. If you're done flattering me, I would appreciate your and Ian's company at the refreshment table. I want a brownie."

Vincent grinned as Natalie confirmed his story--which, as it happened, he had been fibbing at. He wondered quietly what had really happened, and who had dared to look sideways at Natalie. She appeared to have handled it well on her own, which was good. It spared him the need to kick some poor sod's sorry arse into next Tuesday. He made a mental note to ask Natalie about it later on.

Rudy smiled and pushed the plate of brownies toward the two. "My apologies, then," he replied. "I meant no harm."
He glanced back at Ian. "So what are you planning on trying out for: lead, villain, supporting cast, ensemble, musician, tech...?"
He smirked back at the elaborately dressed professor. If his entrance was any indication... Well, Rudeth knew who he'd put his money on for getting the part of The Red Death, that was for certain.

Ian shrugged. "I... er... I guess I don't really know, actually. I was... um... thinking supporting cast, but I think I'll end up in... er... ensemble. I'm very new at this..."
He took a brownie and started to eat slowly, taking small bites and glancing around the auditorium. He was uneasy about this entire thing... how had he let himself be talked into this?
Oh, right. Natalie.

Hoshi hopped up from his seat and tossed a pair of scripts to the duo. He recognized Natalie from his senior Literature class, and though he had never seen Ian before, he certainly remembered the name from that very peculiar staff meeting that happened quite recently.
"Pick whichever part you want to read for," he said. "The two of you can be partnered with each other, unless Smoke has any objections."

Smoke looked between Himmel, Rudy, and Ian and pondered.
"I think... I think we should stick this one-" he handed Himmel's script to Ian, "-with one of the more experienced students. No offense, Natalie, but I think I know which character I want to try your little friend with."

"Gott fickend dammit. Dumme Freunde, die mich machen, stopfen für sie für Speise voll. Dammit."
Himmel glared at Smoke. "You don't have to hold on to me you know. I won't run away....
... okay I will but that is NOT the point."
Then he looked at Natalie and stared for a few minutes.
.....
"So uh.. do you have a reaso... personalit....name? One of those things?"

Valérian watched the goings-on around him, throttling his impulse to shrink into the chair. He really should have tried harder to be not early. He'd gotten the attention he wanted... now he wanted to get the audition started. He loathed waiting; it always made him edgy. Hopefully it wasn't obvious... he took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.
Shouldn't he have a script? He felt the need to have something in his hands. The hands he shoulder have had in gloves. He'd not been able to find both of the gloves, and so decided against them. It ruined the look, but most of these people didn't know enough to see that anyway. If he had gloves, he'd have been fiddling with them anyway. He was still nervous, and his heart should have been pounding, but it didn't do that anymore. Not in a way he could sense, anyway.

Aritha ran down the hallway, running late. Which was unusual for her, but she and Zeph had gotten in a bit of a fight and she HAD to make up before she left. Zeph was her best friend, after all. And she had needed to change first... into one of her favorite dark purple dancer-silks, the long skirt at the moment flying behind her as she skid into the auditorium. Walking at a far more sedate pace once she passed the threshold, Aritha fixed her hair quickly and came down to the table.
"Sorry... I meant to be here earlier. I mostly just wanted to offer to help with costuming though if you like I could try out for a part, too." She flashed a grin at Natalie. "Looks like you could use more women here."

Natalie, who has slipped into a nice peaceful state of mind for a few seconds, snapped out of it at once. "Yes, indeed." She said to Aritha, smiling. "It's kind of a boy's club right now... there is a definite need for more level-headed, intelligent women."
Turning back to Himmel, she gave him an odd look. "Why, yes. I have all three of those things. My name is Natalie Burns. And you are Himmel... Professor Himmel." She corrected herself.

Rudy glanced up at the familiar voice. Aritha, of course, he remembered; how could he forget the disaster that was cooking class? (And yet, through all that, her pasta remained superb. It was truly a miracle, particularly with being partnered with him, of all people.)
"Aritha!" he called, slipping around Ian and Natalie to the other girl's side. "Glad to see you came. I didn't realize you were into theater." He glanced over her and grinned. "If your own appearance is any indication, I'll bet you'd make a perfect costumer."

Aritha looked at him and smiled, "Well, I kind of grew up surrounded by it, though that was a bit more like a circus than a play."
She couldn't help but glow at his compliment, smoothing her skirt. "Thank you, Rudy. How have you been?"
Looking around, she was actually rather surprised not to see Zeph. He loved attention... of course, he might be more interested in Jason than in any really time-consuming after school activity. Oh well; at the moment it might be a bit better to avoid him anyway. She might bite him again... this time literally. Thinking about his hands made her teeth ache... in more ways than one. She shook her head, making the bells and beads in her hair jingle.

He snickered at Natalie's response. "Himmel, I know I am.. but..."
Himmel raised an eyebrow and looked at Smoke.
"Professor? Do I teach Smoke?"

"No," he deadpanned, "you teach art."

Himmel brightened up. And smiled at Smoke.
"See," he said turning to Natalie. "You've been lied to I'm not a Professor."
Grinning he pulled something small and shiny out of his pocket and launched it at Smoke's head. "Thanks."

Natalie sighed. "Whatever you say. I've been thinking about taking an art class, if I get a hole in my schedule." She turned to Ian and shoved a napkin full of cookies into his hands. "If you aren't going to talk to anyone else, eat these. It looks less awkward." Turning back to Himmel, she smiled broadly. "So what are you auditioning for?"

Smoke snatched the coin out of the air, twirled it from one hand to another and then into his pocket, and bowed with a flourish towards Himmel before turning back to Natalie.
"I've given you and Himmel scripts for a scene in Act II, involving the dowager and the prince's advisor- mostly character and plot development. You'll do the scene while either I or Hoshi watch and then switch."

Natalie took the script from Smoke. "Thank you." Turning back to Himmel, she chuckled a little bit. "I see. They pulled the 'eat a brownie, read a part' thing again this year? I had a friend that did the exact same thing two years ago."
She opened her script. "Shall we begin?"

Ian finished off his cookies and backed away from Natalie and Himmel, thrusting his hands into his pockets. He was very uncomfortable here - this was a bit out of the norm for him. He wanted to go over and talk to Aritha but he didn't want to get too far away from Natalie. And also, he didn't really know anybody else so he didn't know who to partner with to read.
Of course, he could always leave, but that was out of the question. Natalie would skin him alive.
