Ian managed a weak smile when Diana put the flowers next to his bed. It was good to see the teacher again, especially after the night before. "Can I try to practice my sign language?" He asked. Diana nodded, and Ian took a deep breath.
So what happened last night? He signed slowly, taking his time to make sure he got each word right. Vero and Ellie wouldn't tell me too much and all I know is that Conall's dead. I don't know how it happened.

Diana bit her lip, wondering how much she should reveal. No doubt Veronique wanted to keep this as hush-hush as possible until everything was sorted out. She settled for the most basic answer she knew of. There was a fight, and I killed him. That gave him the gist without any gruesome details.

Ian sat in the bed for a moment, staring at his literature teacher. She killed Conall? Impossible! He was sure it would have been Veronique... but the more he thought about it, the more he realized that she had, in fact, killed Conall.
Thank you. He signed at her. You probably saved my life. For that, I owe you mine.

Diana smiled, giving Ian's shoulder a gentle squeeze. I consider it my duty to protect the students of this school. I may have given the blow that killed Conall, but there were others who fought even more bravely than I, and fared worse. You owe them just as much for the wounds they received.
She was verging on revealing more than she ought to, she realized. But that's a story for another day. For now, we should be thankful that a menace to this school has been successfully dealt with. We'll never need to fear him again.

Ian nodded and smiled slightly. At least it's all over, then. Life can get back to normal. Who else was all there? I remember Miss. Evans-Barros, and some boy... Jaebi, I think, I don't remember... Did I say that right? I only just learned sign language a few weeks before coming here...

Diana smiled and nodded. You said it right. You're doing very well for a beginner. She paused. I can tell you that Professor Hawk was there, as well as his daughter Ariel and her friend Korlian. I'll spare you the nasty details.

Ian nodded. I will be sure to thank them. And thank you again, Professor Harrows. For the flowers, and for my life.
He leaned back and stared at the ceiling, studying the light patterns on the ceiling. It was all over, then. He was alive, and Conall was dead, and nothing else was going to go wrong for him. Maybe. He didn't have a very good track record for that...

Diana smiled and nodded.
You're very welcome, Ian. I feel that protecting the students and other staff here is a duty every one of us should share. Sometimes we take our own safety for granted, and it can have consequences. But that's enough dark talk for now. I'm sure we'll have plenty of celebrating to do soon enough.
She squeezed Ian's shoulder again and slipped softly from his side.

Stephen had followed Nina down the hallway toward the sick bay, just in time to watch the janitor cleaning up the last of what he had said was "like something out of a horror movie. A smear of blood from all the way back up the hall there. Looked like someone butchered a horse." Curiosity had compelled him to ask what had happened, but the janitor had been less than informative.
Now Stephen slipped into the bay, immediately noticing Dubhiarr two beds away; her arms were wrapped tightly around Nina, whose face was buried in Dubhiarr's shoulder. Stephen stepped closer, looking from one girl to the other, speaking more or less to both of them.
"Is everything okay? What landed you in here?"

Nina, her entire body stiff though she did not push away from Dubhiarr, said something along the lines of "that deplorable old bastard who is SO DAMN LUCKY I'm too short to reach his throat..."
Though it was hard to hear. Her voice was quite muffled. For all anyone heard, it could very well have been a recitation of the lyrics to Thriller.

Stephen cautiously moved Dubhiarr's hair away from where it had fallen over her neck, his eyes widening at the sight of the two small tooth marks.
"No way. No frigging way. Where is he?! I'm gonna kill that evil bloody son of a--!"

"Language, Stephen. Language."
Kemekin's groggy voice was a quiet sound behind the trio. The boy had just come back to consciousness a moment before and was now slowly pulling himself to a sitting position, folding his legs beneath the blankets of his bed and rubbing his eyes. He was faintly sore-- sore everywhere. Nothing he couldn't ignore, though.
"What's happened?" he asked, when he noticed the sheer number of warm bodies in the room.

Stephen turned to look at Kemekin, his good eye blazing.
"Creeps McGee thought it'd be a good idea to make a snack out of Dubhiarr here," he growled, clenching his hands into white-knuckled fists. "And when I find him, they'll be picking him up for WEEKS."

Ian snorted softly to himself. Easy enough for them to say. They weren't there. He looked over at Diana pleadingly.
Can I tell them he's dead? He signed furiously. I don't want to have to listen to this all day... I think it would have an adverse effect on my... Shit, how did you say that word? Oh, yeah. ...sanity.

Diana bit her lip slightly, then nodded, relenting. It would save us a lot of chaos, I think. Don't tell them too much, though. I think Veronique will want to keep this relatively quiet.

Ian nodded. Thank you. Then he turned his attention back to the crowd of students surrounding the bed next to his.
"I'm... um... afraid that you're going to be a little... uh... disappointed." He said louder than he would have liked to. "I'm afraid that... um... you aren't going to get a shot at Conall. Because he's... uh... he's six feet under, so to speak... I mean... um... Conall's dead."

Stephen's jaw dropped. "You're kidding! Please tell me you're kidding."
That must have been the source of all the blood, he realized. Oh, Haneul was going to be pissed. The monk would have leaped at the chance to kung-fu Creeps to a bloody pulp.
"So who did it?"

Kemekin's eyebrows shot up. He leaned forward a little, looking around for his aunt. Not seeing her, he slumped his shoulders and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Honestly," he said, his voice uncharacteristically quiet, "I'd rather not know."

"Well, I want to know," Dubhiarr spoke up. "I want to know whom I should thank for saving me, and saving the school from that pervert they called a teacher. I think we deserve to know." She looked over at Ian. "What were you and Professor Harrows talking about just now? I don't know sign language."

"Er..." Ian shot Diana a worried look. "I'd rather not talk about it, if that's okay. They only told me because I... um... well, I may have had something to do with it, even thought I didn't... uh... see it. If they want you to... um... I mean, the teachers will probably tell you anything that they want you to know but... uh... I think they're trying to keep the whole thing under wraps. So, you know, the whole school doesn't know..."
Oops.

Kemekin watched Ian curiously. "That would be the reason for so many people in here, I'm guessing," he said. "So what did you have to do with it?"

"Uh..." Ian was at a loss for words. He would prefer not to describe his mental brush with Conall in detail, or at all if possible. But there was no backing out of it now. "Um... I was... there, in the hallway and um... I saw the beginning, before Conall... um... what I mean to say is that I had to... uh... Conall knocked me out?" That was good, and vague enough that no one would know the difference.
Ian tried to will himself back to sleep, but it didn't work. Apparently he didn't have the willpower to do very much.

It was here that Nina pulled away from Dubhiarr, watching Ian intently. She knew all too well how it felt to be so very smothered by the presence of a small group of people. This was the kind of hindering shyness she had once experienced-- though she couldn't remember the when or how of getting over it. There was no way of telling this to Ian, however badly she wanted to comfort the stuttering young man.
She took a step or two closer to the side of his bed. She decided that the next best thing would be a change of subject. "What's your name?" she asked quietly.

"I'm... um... My name is Ian. I've been here for three days. I don't know who... uh... any of you are, sorry... um..." Ian felt completely smothered. At least the subject was changed, but he wouldn't feel very good until he was no longer the center of attention.

Dubhiarr sat up, leaning over to look at Ian and speaking up into introduce herself. "I'm Dubhiarr. This is my roommate Nina," she gestured to Nina, "and our friend Stephen." She nodded up at the vampire, who still stood by her bed. "It's nice to meet you, Ian. And nice to know you had a part in saving the school from the worst menace we've yet seen."
