Hitoshi shrugged, leaning back onto his pillow and staring at the ceiling. "Only if you want me to," he replied. "I don't especially care either way."
It was strangely comfortable like this, and after the long day of opening ceremonies, meeting teachers, touring classrooms, and other useless customs that held no meaning, Hitoshi was rather tired. He slipped off his glasses and set them on the nightstand, folding his arms behind his head and staring at the blurs above his head.
"I still wonder what reason someone would have for manipulating you into coming to Dunehelden," Hitoshi mused. "I suppose it's possible that it's directly because of whatever Fate seems to have in store, but it's also likely that this person had another reason that we don't yet know."

"I suppose so... I don't know enough about this sort of thing yet to predict, but I'm curious."
He dug his fingers into the covers and just looked at Hitoshi. "I would like to. But you seem tired. Should I let you nap?"

Hitoshi smiled. "No, I'm not really," he replied. "If you really want me to look at it, it wouldn't take long." He yawned slightly. Then again, a nap might be nice....
"The two major possibilities I can think of are that someone thinks you might become a werewolf, or someone thinks you might become a mage." He paused, taking a deep breath. Personally, he would hope the boy would become a mage over a wolf. The thought was much more appealing -- and perhaps in that event, he could continue to room with Alex. He had to admit, he certainly enjoyed spending time with him...

"I can wait," Alex said. He looked at Hitoshi softly; he was adorable. Alex wanted to cuddle up next to him, but he also didn't want to disturb the boy too much, particularly now. He was beginning to get the feeling that Hitoshi was actually frightened of something, and that hurt a little.
Instead, he decided to compromise and curl up on the other end of the bed; if that wasn't enough room, he could always move.
"How would they tell that? Is there a way we could check one or the other?"

Hitoshi thought for a moment. "There aren't really any ways to test for them, though if you don't have a history of werewolves in your family, it's unlikely that you are one. Besides, you don't have quite the temperament for a wolf." He curled slightly on his side so that he was facing slightly toward Alex. "However, being a mage is more subjective -- becoming one is based as much on experience as it is on genetics."
He blinked, then smiled. "Of course, there are certain things that seem to make it more likely. We could always try and expedite the process."

Alex raised an eyebrow. "Now just what in the world would that entail?"
"And that really makes me wonder how they would know, then. I have no idea what sort of genetics I'd have wiggling around."

Hitoshi closed his eyes ponderously. "Well, it seems the more exposure to magic you have, the more likely it is," he explained, "but that's not the only factor. It can also manifest under times of stress or danger as a sort of defense mechanism, though some have suggested that any extreme emotion -- positive ones as well as negative ones -- can cause powers to manifest. Dreams can also cause surges of magical energy.
"There are also other, more specific things, which I'm sure we could ask some of the professors would be able to tell us -- Yaodensi would certainly know, and probably Smoke and Tristan, too." He grinned. "It might be interesting to see what it would take to activate your powers, if you actually have them. And I think you'd make a pretty good mage."

Alex considered that, tapping his lower lip. "Mm."
"You seem eager to use me as a guinea pig, Hitoshi," he smirked slightly. "Though if you wanted to do a lot of magic at me, or make me really happy, I suppose I wouldn't mind that."
He opened his mouth again, and was about to ask how Hitoshi's magic had manifested, but recalled what Rudeth had said in time to stop himself. He didn't want to pry if it was something bad.

Hitoshi smirked. "I suppose that's one way to look at it," he replied. "If it worked, you'd be the first mage I've ever known that willingly and intentionally made their own power manifest. It would certainly be an accomplishment."
This would be quite interesting... If Alex was in fact a mage, Hitoshi decided, he was going to help him in whatever means possible to reach his potential. After all, if there was some epic battle of some sort in the future, he needed to make sure his partner was fully equipped for it.

Alex poked Hitoshi's leg with his foot. "The very first... that's unlikely."
"But it would be interesting to try; I think I'd learn something. How would we begin? It's your suggestion, and you've convinced me, so I'm going to make you help me."

Hitoshi chuckled. "I didn't say the very first," he replied. "I said the first I've known. I'm sure there have been others, but they're almost certainly few and far between."
Hitoshi propped himself up on his arm. "Well, I'm not quite sure where to begin. Can you think of anything in particular that might elicit the sort of unbridled response it would take to make you manifest?"

"You did. Still," he smirked again.
"How would- how would I get emotionally shaken up? Or something?" The first thing Alex could think of was simply what Hitoshi was doing to him, though it wasn't quite to the point of 'unbridled'. The second thing Alex could think of made him blush slightly, and he rubbed his cheek; hopefully he was still a little red from earlier. "How would I know what sort of thing would do that? It doesn't happen often. What would you think, from what you know of me, would cause that?"

Hitoshi glanced back at Alex, though without his glasses he was nearly blind. "Well, the two most common are fear and anger, a sort of fight-or-flight response," he replied. "Though I don't think either of would like to intentionally put you in danger real enough to actually do anything, so we can cross that off the list. Of course, if you have any less rational phobias, that might be usable.
"Of course, with what I know of you, it seems that if happiness would work for anyone, it would be you."
It was also possible, he realized, that him fearing that someone else was in danger might work in a similar manner. He would file that knowledge for later, just in case...

"Mm, well all the ways I can think of of becoming completely and ecstatically happy involve you," Alex teased. "Or perhaps that man that played Jack Sparrow; do you think we could get him here on short notice?"
He blinked then, and facepalmed. "I swear I wasn't half this much of a pervert two weeks ago. There must be something in the water."

Hitoshi looked at him oddly, then burst out laughing. He nudged Alex gently with his foot. "Don't push it," he replied lightly. "I'm still thinking about my answer."
It certainly was an interesting notion, he admitting. He'd never heard of that working before, but then, he doubted it would be public knowledge if it had...
"I'm sure there are other things," he continued. "I'll just have to ask my uncles."

"Aaaaugh!" Alex hid his face in his hands again. "That's not what- oh god, that is what I meant. I'm sorry. I really don't know why I said that."
Nevertheless, he couldn't help but laugh himself. It was remarkably easy to feel relaxed around Hitoshi; that must be why I keep acting like such an idiot, sadly enough, he thought. "Yes, let's do that. Ask your uncles, I mean."

"Alright, that sounds like a plan," he said. "We'll go to Tristan, Yaodensi, and probably Smoke and ask them if they know anything we can do."
He yawned a bit, lying back on the bed. "...I hope you don't mind, but I think I am going to take that nap. I stayed up until a ridiculous hour last night and ended up getting almost no sleep, and I'd like to be rested before we talk to my uncles about this."
He closed his eyes, and for a moment, he was quiet. "I'll try and answer you as soon as I can, okay?" he murmured.

Alex sat back up on one arm and looked at Hitoshi. Adorable little fellow.
"Don't worry about it; I'll let you sleep," he replied.
After a minute, he got up carefully from the bed, slipped his sandals on, and as quietly as he could, left the room. It would be a good time to do his own sort of research.

----
It was a bright Saturday morning when Alex came back to the dorms. Something had woke him up a little before dawn, and he'd decided to see if he could sneak outside and watch the sun rise with a book. He'd been caught by a teacher, but he gave them a winsome little smile and implied he was going to study, and they'd believed him.
He'd spent a few hours out on the edges of the grounds, just inside the safe side, watching the shifting colors of the sky over the forest.
It was a little after breakfast when he realized what time it was and ran back inside to change shirts.

Hitoshi, for his part, had woken up only shortly after Alex, finding it impossible to sleep long past dawn no matter what time he actually hauled himself into bed. He realized rather quickly, and not without a twinge of disappointment, that he was alone. He took advantage of this free time to shower and find something clean to wear. Most of his uniforms were dirty, which meant that he would need to do laundry over the weekend. However -- thanks to Hitomi's insistence on taking him shopping -- Hitoshi managed to scrounge up something that Hitomi had assured him was fashionable.
Hitoshi had intended to only spend a few minutes checking up on things on his computer before heading down to breakfast, but between a ridiculous amount of emails from Rudeth (more plans for his silly club which Hitoshi would have to explain were far too elaborate and expensive to actually work) and Hitomi (mostly junk email -- she kept inviting him to one site or another mostly because it got her points when people signed up), and learning that someone had hacked into his account on the school forum and was currently spamming with it, it took much longer than Hitoshi expected. And after the little forum incident -- it seemed a fourth of the student body had their accounts hacked -- Hitoshi took it upon himself to write a long and none-too-pleasant letter to the forum moderator.
It wasn't until he heard the creak of the door opening that he realized how long he had been at his computer. He glanced up, grateful for the distraction, and shutting the ridiculous thing off.

"Hello!" Alex called.
He came in and dropped his book on the bed, then began searching for a clean shirt. There didn't seem to be many left- he'd left a large portion of his wardrobe at home, having underestimated the utility of uniforms and the hassle of having to do laundry all himself rather than just helping out occasionally.
He glanced over to Hitoshi. "Sleep well?"

Hitoshi pushed the laptop back onto the desk, sliding off of the bed.
"Reasonably," Hitoshi said noncommittally, watching Alex. "What about you?"

"It was short. On the other hand, it's a beautiful day outside, and I finished half of Candide." Alex picked out something purple and put it on.
"Is there anything you want to do today?"

Hitoshi thought for a moment. "I already finished my homework, so I have most of the day free," he replied, kicking his shoes from under the bed and working on lacing them up. He paused momentarily.
"Would you like to do something?" he asked. "I could grab some things from the kitchen for lunch and we could go out in the courtyard. You might--oof." Hitoshi glared at the stubborn shoe, undoing the laces before trying to get it on again. "You might be able to finish your book. I could borrow the chess set from the lounge, if you like."
Hitoshi realized almost immediately afterwards that it probably sounded suspiciously like a date. He wasn't sure if he wanted Alex to think it was or not.

"That sounds great. I'd love to play chess. We could take apples and things for sandwiches, and something to sit on, like a picnic," Alex said cheerfully.
"Would you like to invite other people?"
