Hitoshi wrapped his arms around Alex, drawing the other boy closer, just as much to help keep himself warm as to help Alex.
"I'd like to ask her about the prophecy and things too," he replied. "And it's getting dark. We can see what she knows, and once the snow melts it should be easier to look around."

"All right." Alex wrapped one arm around Hitoshi's waist and stuck his hand in Hitoshi's pocket.
It was entirely dark by the time they got back; Alex let his spell fade when they left the woods, and so they navigated by the porchlight and the moon. Hitomi, Sofie, and Rivienne were watching some movie, and presumably the rest of the family was off someplace.

Hitoshi slid out of his coat and tossed it over one of the chairs in the den. "We can go find my grandmother now, if you want," he suggested. "Or we can go back to the library and talk to her tomorrow. What would you rather do?"

Alex perked as he remembered the book. "Ooh. Uhm. I suppose it's up to you. I'd love to curl under a blanket and read, but the rest might be kind of important, and I don't want to forget it. What do you think she's doing?"

Hitoshi shrugged. "I haven't got a clue. We could look for her, I suppose. She's probably somewhere with Tristan. I'm sure we could ask Rivienne." He glanced back. "Besides, we'll have plenty of time to read tonight."

Grandma was, in fact, in the attic, attempting to show Rudy a thing or two about swordplay by sparring with Tristan.
She pointed the sword at her son- a wooden practice sword, though she'd apparently convinced Tristan to use his steel- looking at the boys entering out of the corner of her eye.
"Come in, sit down, you can have a turn after Rudeth," she waved to them, then followed up with a strange flickering thrust.

Hitoshi glanced at Alex out of the corner of his eye, giving a shrug. While this was undoubtedly a strange sight for the other boy, this was a relatively common occurrence with Hitoshi's family. If anything, Hitoshi was somewhat worried about his uncle.
Hitoshi tugged Alex around to the other side of the attic, taking a seat on a large wooden chest. It shouldn't take a great deal of time for them to finish, anyway.

----
Alex was curled up in a blanket against the arm of the couch, watching the end of a movie with Hitomi, a small plate of cherry pie Grandma Volkova had made balanced on one knee.
