Hitoshi furrowed his eyebrow. His father...
His eyes went wide. Recreate the prophecy. Let him review it. Hitoshi latched onto that.
"Problematic?" he asked. "What do you mean? What would you need from me?"

"Well, there are certain issues I'm sure you can work out with someone hearing their own prophecy. You've read Greek tragedy, or at least of it? It may not be that bad, given what we know of it already, but then, you won't know until you hear it."
"Other than that, if you just wanted me to try to grab that specific prophecy, I would need one or preferably both of you as a focus. To actually go back and hear the prophecy as it was spoken, I would need one or preferably both of you to clear out most of a day to let me work a ritual around you, and I would need some recompense for my time and effort. Say, help me with the Deputy-Headmaster stuff I'd otherwise be doing for a day or two, allow me to sample those cooking skills I've heard so much about, and we're even?"

Hitoshi looked away, considering it for a moment. He could see the prophecy -- his mother's prophecy -- but it might cause more problems to view it than it would to just ignore it. Prophecies and their tendency to self-fulfill.
What do you think? I don't want to give an answer without your input. Hitoshi glanced over at Alex, his thoughts laced with apprehension.

Alex smiled softly at Hitoshi.
I'm really curious, but... he looked away, apprehensive about his next thought. It sounds like a bad idea. On the other hand, your mother...
"Is there a way to make it less likely there might be unintended side effects?"

Did they just- huh. "Nice trick with those."
"Kind of. Possibly. It depends a lot on how complicated it is, whether you're already fulfilling it in its entirety, why you'd want to hear it, et cetera... but mostly, the less you worry about it the less likely it is to matter."

"It doesn't sound like there's really any way to tell," he replied. He bit his lip.
I really want to hear the prophecy. But if you think it might be a bad idea... He trailed off. I at least want to help Professor Smoke with the ritual. I'd like you to be there with me. Something warm coated the edges of the thought.
"But...if nothing else, we can do the ritual. You can learn the prophecy, and you can tell us what you think we should know."

"Oh, there probably is, but observation would alter the results." He shrugged. "What can you do."
"If you want. Just tell-" He paused and considered something. "Can- actually, before you go, may I ask you something?"

"Oh. Of course." Hitoshi looked back at Smoke.
He wondered what the professor could want to ask him.

"That kid you were having a row with during the Waltz- do you remember him? He's been involved in some strange things lately and I was wondering if you knew him very well."

"Angel?" Hitoshi frowned. "I don't know him very well, but he's a bit suspicious. He used to spend a lot of time with Lamadre before she disappeared. I saw him take her out into the woods once."
He paused for a moment. "He also mentioned something about my mother when we were fighting. Not by name, but he made it sound like he knew about her. And... I think he had something to do with the incident at Halloween. I don't have any proof, of course. I don't really remember anything... but he did something."

"Into the woods?" He looked seriously at the boy.
"You think Angel was involved with the play?" Smoke thought back to Val's words, to what he remembered... "All right. If you come up with anything else, tell me, all right? And, not saying you have been, but don't antagonize him."
"Now, is..." he looked over at his calendar, "this coming Sunday all right for both of you?"

He nodded. "I think they spent a lot of time together during the last few weeks before she disappeared."
Hitoshi glanced over at Alex. "Sunday sounds alright, unless Alex has plans. Are there any special preparations? Should we bring anything, or...?"

"I'll have to look up the one I'm thinking of, but I don't think there's anything you particularly need to do. If there is, I'll find you."
Smoke smiled. "Anything else?"

"There was one more thing," he said, staring at the wood-grain of Smoke's desk. "Something from Halloween."
He glanced up. "I remember something, and I don't know what it means. I was talking to someone while I was asleep. He said that they were after what the founders found, and that they left because it wasn't here. Something was going to break... And he said it would be all my fault. Our fault. Someone. I don't know who he meant."

Smoke's smile dropped.
"That who were 'after what the founders found'? And who said this?"

"The Fae, I think," he said. "I don't know who he was. A boy. One of them, I think."

"Do you remember what he looked like? And is that what exactly he said?" Smoke looked at him seriously.

"What, you mean word for word?" Hitoshi asked. He scowled. "I don't remember the exact wording, but that's as close as I can remember. There was also something about what seems real might not be, and vice versa, or something."
He thought for a moment. "Just a young boy, with dark skin and dark hair. He didn't look like anyone in particular."

He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "That's... fine. It was Hallowe'en. Thanks for telling me about that."

"I'll let you know if I remember anything else," he said. Hitoshi pulled himself out of the chair and hoisted his backpack off of the floor. "Thank you for your time, Professor."
He glanced back at Alex. "Ready to go?"

Alex nodded. "Thank you," he said to Smoke, then turned back to Hitoshi, touching the boy's shoulder.
Let's talk about this later?

"You're both welcome. See you on Saturday."
He sighed with relief as they left... I hope that's over. This is getting weird, for a minor prophecy about a couple of kids.
