"I'm partial to the classics," he admitted quietly, watching as the opening scene burst out into a full fledged fight. "If something's popular, it's usually because there's something to it."
The scene shifted. At last, Leonardo DiCaprio came onscreen, and Romeo and Benvolio began their exchange. "The hard thing about this movie is that you know that no matter how many times you see it, it's going to end badly. You hate it, and you wish that just once the circumstances would be just a little different."

He nodded idly. "The sins of the fathers will be visited upon the children... or something like that."
Oh, this was going to be a fun movie. Alex was fairly sure he could switch between worrying about the plot and staring at the pretty without any particular ill effects. He was certainly happy to try.

Blaise leaned back into the cushions and shifted toward Alex so that they were only a few inches apart. He could smell Alex's reactions to each scene, each line of dialogue.
At last the scene shifted to the Capulets' ball -- which was, in Blaise's opinion, where the movie actually started to get interesting. When Romeo first approached Juliet, Blaise resumed murmuring Romeo's lines, leaning slightly toward Alex as he spoke.

Alex turned towards Blaise and gave him a curious look. He sincerely doubted the other boy was unaware of what he was doing, from what little Alex knew of him. It wasn't entirely unpleasant, granted, and certainly different, but he was not going to allow Blaise to think he was either stupid or easy.
"You should take theatre classes," he mumbled. "They put on Shakespeare pretty often, and you might make an interesting Romeo."
He was perfectly willing to give off a number of other, preferably conflicting impressions, of course.

Blaise smirked, but he seemed to take the hint and shifted back slightly. "You think so?" he asked, watching Alex from the corner of his eye. "I've never tried before, but since I'm not going to be doing competitive tennis for a while, it might be nice to have a distraction."
The balcony scene began, and Blaise berated himself mentally. It would have worked much better than the ball scene, but it was a bit too soon to try that again.
"How do you keep yourself from going stir crazy, cooped up in this place for months on end?" he asked. "Most boarding schools at least let you go out on the weekends."

"I think it would be a mutally enjoyable experience," Alex smiled.
"I meet new people; I study; I find puzzles and solve them. Sometimes together at once. Do you do anything other than tennis as a hobby?"

"Studying sounds horrible," he said idly. "I can't imagine why you'd want to waste your high school years with studying. My grades are passable without it, and I plan on going to a university on a tennis scholarship."
It was a little tougher here, of course. The teachers weren't quite so easily swayed by who he was, and the curriculum in some classes included things that he'd never even heard of before. He was never sure how to answer questions like "Who are the five Werewolves on the United States senate?" or "What is the difference between a Selkie and a Kelpie?" Even in literature class, which Blaise usually enjoyed, he had to identify which authors were mages, and he could never remember whether it was Euripedes or Sophocles.
"I guess you could say I make people my hobby," he said at last.

"Mm, something else we have in common, then- and I study because I need an academic scholarship."
He crossed his legs and watched the movie, brimming with happiness and anticipation.

Blaise paused, thinking for a moment. He decided to change his approach. "So how long have you been with your boyfriend?" he asked casually. "I'm guessing he's your first."
He turned toward the other boy, his senses sharp to the slightest change in his emotions.

Huh. Is he actually flirting with me?
"Mid-September. You?" he said with a straight face.

"I'm not actually seeing anyone right now," Blaise replied. He shrugged one shoulder. "My last girlfriend and I decided to split up when I changed schools, though I might see her again over the summer. We'd only been dating for about a month, though, so it wasn't a big deal."
He turned all the way to the side and leaned against a pillow. "September, though... That's going on six months. That's pretty impressive, for a first relationship," he mused. "My first girlfriend lasted about that long, actually. We didn't really have anything in common, but neither of us really wanted to break the relationship, since neither of us had ever dated before. We were determined to make it work. It dragged on much longer than it should have, and it ended really badly."
He hesitated for a moment, then looked away. He bit his lip. "I probably shouldn't say anything, and I don't know if this is my place, but it's really rare that first relationships work out," he commented. "You need time to test the waters, to figure out who you are and what you want from life. It's best not to take high school romances too seriously. If you get too involved in them, someone usually ends up hurt."
He gave Alex a slight smile. "I don't want you to take this the wrong way or anything. I don't know anything about you and your boyfriend's relationship. I just wish someone had said something like it to me."
He wasn't quite sure what possessed him to say it -- he really hadn't intended to spill his life story to the other boy -- but he did sort of like Alex. And from what he had seen of Alex and his boyfriend, which has admittedly not very much, his boyfriend didn't seem remotely similar to Alex. Hitoshi was dry and boring, he seemed reluctant to even let Alex kiss him in front of people, and even with the few minutes they'd spent together Blaise could tell he didn't care for people. He was practically the polar opposite of the white-haired boy. Blaise honestly couldn't figure out what Alex saw in someone like that.

Alex smiled back, his eyes flickering over Blaise's expression, but the smile didn't quite reach his eyes.
He had... absolutely no idea how to respond to that. One thumb unconsciously began rubbing his bracelet.

"Like I said, it's probably not my business," he said softly. He didn't need to be able to sense his emotions to read his reaction. He couldn't help but feel a bit regretful. The soft sent of eucalyptus leaves faded, and leaving the room smelling slightly musty.
The movie had finally made it to the wedding scene, which was set to a Prince song. Blaise supposed that, for now, the best thing to do would be to change the subject.
"This is going to sound like a strange question, especially since you're an underclassman, but how are you at ancient history?" Blaise gave Alex a slightly embarrassed glance. "I'm complete shit at history. I think we're on...Assyria? Or maybe Babylon, but it's one of the first few." He wrinkled his nose. "I don't care that much about my grades, but if I don't catch up soon, I'm probably going to flunk out of the course."

It took Alex a while to answer. He sat there looking blankly at the screen, thinking about things.
"Mmh," he shrugged. "I'm all right at it. If you want help, I guess I could."
