Joelle rested her chin in one hand as she raised a glass of fake blood to her mouth with the other. The mess hall was almost totally empty at this time of the evening; it was getting close to eight o'clock.
Joelle was alone at her table, tucked away in a corner of the mess hall. She wished Aritha was here to talk to, but she was away on the field trip in Greece. It was awfully lonely without her around.
She set her glass aside, pulling a small leather-bound book toward her and opening it to a page marked with a length of red ribbon. There was an unfinished poem written there: an epic tale about a noble prince who went on a quest to win the hand of the mysterious and lovely Lady White.
The prince was currently making his way through a forest that teemed with creatures both harmful and helpful; a nameless person in a long black cloak was acting as his guide. Joelle hadn't yet decided whether or not the guide was as benign as he or she seemed. She pulled a pencil from behind her ear and tapped the eraser against the page, nibbling her lip in thought.

Korlian was bored. Bored bored bored bored BORED! He walked through the castle, finally ending up in the mess hall. Finally, finally he found someone. At the moment, he didn't even care how interesting they were.
As he got closer, he realized it was a vampire. A pretty girl vampire. Korlian grinned. Vampires were always fun. They were almost as unnatural as he was (in his current form, at least). He walked over to her, wrinkling his nose at the smell of her fake blood. He sat on the other side of the table and peeerrred over at her notebook. "Hello. Whatcha writin'?"

Joelle looked up at the voice, and smiled at the sight of the student she didn't recognize. Finally, someone to talk to!
"Hi," she replied to his greeting, setting her pencil down and leaning forward to look at him. "It's a poem about a prince and the lady he wants to court, based on my roommate and her boyfriend. I've been working on it for a few days now. What are you up to?"

Korlian shrugged. "Looking for something to do. With most people either home or on the trip, I'm very bored. And most people avoid me for some reason."
He smiled at her, noticing his necklace beginning to slip out. He shoved it back into his shirt quickly; not a good idea showing a vampire those little trophies. She'd probably be frightened by them.

"Really? I can't imagine why," Joelle said good-naturedly, watching curiously as the boy tucked something under his shirt. She couldn't see what was there, though, and didn't bring it up.
"Yeah, I've been pretty bored too. And lonely. My roommate is away in Greece; it's odd not having her around to talk to."

Korlian nodded. "I'm rooming with my brother. We... don't always get along."
He grinned slightly, his unusually long canines (for a human, anyway) peeking over his lips. Apparently she didn't know who he was. That meant she would be more fun to play with. Maybe.
His necklace slipped out again, but thankfully it was only the one with his pipes. At least, thankfully in that she wouldn't be frightened by them like she probably would Conall's teeth. He read the poem upside down. "Who's your roommate? For some reason some of this seems familiar."

Joelle laughed. "Sounds a bit like Zeph Aetai and his brothers; I hear they can get pretty destructive when they fight."
She blinked as something shiny slipped out of the boy's shirt -- a set of silver panpipes suspended on a thin cord. Well, that was interesting.
"Aritha Kairavi," she answered his question, a little distractedly. "Her boyfriend is Rudy Volkova. They're such a cute couple."
She paused, looking back at his panpipes. "That's an interesting instrument. Where'd you get them? They're very pretty."

Korlian shrugged. "The only thing we are destructive to is ourselves. Zeph and his brothers can take out buildings. I heard that Zeph and his brother Euros took out part of their house last time they got in a real fight."
He nodded at hearing who it was based on. Aritha he didn't know very well, but he remembered Rudy Volkova. In fact, he rather avoided the young man for a very specific reason. After all, it was his (admittedly distant) kin who had killed the boy's twin.
He fingered his pipes. "I made them," he stated simply.

"They're really well-made," Joelle noted with a smile, leaning forward a little to get a closer look at them. "What are they made of? Looks like silver or white-gold. I bet they sound really nice."

Korlian looked at them. "I don't... rightly remember. I know there's silver in them. But then, there's a lot I don't remember. I've gotten used to the frustration."
He tucked the pipes back into his shirt, being careful that his other necklace did not show. "I think they sound nice, but people who've heard me play usually don't like it."

"Ohh." Joelle's eyebrows rose in recognition. "Yeah, you're Lhachlhass' brother."
She looked curiously at him across the table, her eyes wary. She knew the brothers had been heavily involved in what had happened on Halloween. "I've seen Lhachlhass once or twice, but we've never spoken."

Korlian grinned at her. "I'm more tame than he is. Lhachlhass is... off. But it's not his fault."
He shrugged, still grinning. He could see the distrust in her eyes and sat down on the other side of the table. "So... I suppose you understand why I don't get along with my roommate very well."

Joelle nodded. "Yeah, I can see that."
She continued to watch him curiously, her head tilted to one side. After a moment she reached for her glass of fake blood and took a sip. She licked her lips as she set it down again.
"Sorry if the smell of this is bothering you," she apologized. "I can finish it off quickly if you like."

Korlian had unconsciously curled his nose as she picked up the glass, but he only noticed it when she mentioned something. He swallowed and shook his head. "No, s'okay. I go to a school full of vampires, blood shouldn't bother me.
"Besides..." he added. "It's not the blood itself. It's... what's in it."
He rubbed his nose a little. It was odd; when they'd been killed Conall the blood hadn't bothered him. It was the next day that it had turned his stomach. Maybe... fresh blood didn't affect him as badly? All the iron would be enclosed in the hemoglobin when the blood was fresh... but after it sat for even an hour, the cells started to break down... and maybe the iron would be more exposed after that? He gave a slight shrug, though it was meant for himself. Maybe that explained it.

Joelle nodded slowly, noticing Korlian's discomfort, and downed the rest of the blood in a few gulps to spare him the smell of it. She stood up, still holding the glass. "Excuse me. I'll go and wash this out really quick."
She slipped away to the kitchen, washing out the glass carefully and putting it away, then heading back to her table. She sat down again, smiling over at Korlian. "There. Better?"

Korlian nodded, "Thank you. It's not the blood, it's the iron. Even that fake stuff has iron in it. It seems sometimes like it has MORE iron than normal blood."
He could still smell it on her breath, but it didn't bother him as much in that form. He looked over the poem again. "This is good," he said, reading through it a second time. He most liked that cloaked stranger; in a way, it reminded him of one of his ancient, and favorite, disguises. One of the few he remembered. It seemed to him that he'd actually lost memories the day after Halloween, but he also seemed to have slightly greater abilities.
Nothing compared to what Lhachlhass had, but then Chlhass didn't remember nearly as much as Korlian did. Maybe it balanced out.

"You're welcome," Joelle said with a smile. "I think the fake blood does have more iron than the real stuff. I'm not sure what's all in it. It must be annoying for you, being in a school full of vampires who drink this and the real thing every day. I have to wonder though, why does it bother you so much? Isn't that just a Fae thing?"
She watched him reading her poem again and grinned. "Thanks. I still haven't decided whether the person in the cloak is going to be bad or good, or even if it's male or female. What do you think it should be?"

"It's... complicated and you don't really want to know anyway," he answered. "Trust me."
Korlian had to pause and really think about that. He knew what he wanted. But that probably didn't fit the story anyway. He read the story again, thoughtfully. "Well, I know what I want, but there's also your story to consider. Personally, to me, he sounds more Fae. Which are neutral, no matter their Court. But I'm not certain that would fit your story, and I rather doubt Volkova would appreciate being in a story with Fae. He has good reason to dislike them. But they don't seem... human, either."

"Hmm." Joelle nibbled her lip again as she thought about that. "I know the cloaked person definitely isn't human, but something obviously humanoid. Possibly a Fae, possibly another vampire like Lady White... ooh! That gives me an idea -- maybe he could be another guy who wants to win Lady White's heart, and so he's planning to get the prince good and lost in the wood so he doesn't find her. Mhaha."
She cackled softly to herself, grinning as she picked up her pencil again and jotted down a few more stanzas.
The hooded figure led Prince Rudeth deep into the umbral wood; Their pathway wound and twisted on, the shadows closing in around. The prince's mind and heart began to doubt his guide's intent was good: When urged to follow yet again, he lingered back and stood his ground.
"Respond to me with truth," he cried, "that thou art friend or enemy! Art thou some foul will-o-the-wisp, intent on leading me astray? I order thee to lead me right, or taste my steel, and death to thee!" The figure cackled, "Foolish boy! Malign me and become my prey!"

Korlian just listened to her talk, then watched her write, still reading it upside down. He wasn't sure about what the figure said, but it was her poem not his, and it wasn't like he was even going to be mentioned. He just read it again, then gave a mental shrug and stepped back.
"It looks good," he shrugged. "I don't write poetry, so..."

Joelle smiled. "Thanks. A lot of people don't seem to 'get' poetry, I find. I understand that about the really metaphor- and simile-heavy stuff, but poems like this one, I think they're really straightforward. It's just a story told in a rhythmic way, really. Like the lays Tolkien wrote about his characters. I love those."

Korlian smiled and nodded, "It's just another way to tell a story most of the time. It was used as a way to teach, and pass stories on. A rhythmic story, or rhyming, tends to be easier for the human mind to remember."
He paused and tilted his head. "I've not read any of Tolkien's work. I probably will before I graduate, though. I've heard it's good, but I couldn't get it at home, and haven't had time yet this year. I've been..."
He smiled a little. "Busy."

I've been meaning to get Unfinished Tales and The Hobbit, too, but haven't found much time, and when I do have time, I don't have money on me. That's always how it seems to work out," she grinned.
