Seth batted one scientist on the head with his paw, wincing as the man's skull hit the wall with a sickening thud. Oops, one down. Gently Seth; they made you stronger than you are used to.
He worked on only knocking the people in his way out, trying not to kill them at all. Seth wasn't a murderer. But he was starving for some real food. Finally getting to the kitchen, and blocking the door while several scientists tried to get him, he shifted human and raided their fridge for something decent. Sneaking something to Jason would be the hard part... Idly he turned the gas stove on high, watching the flame lick at the ceiling. The fire alarm went off and he nodded, looking out the window as those who didn't know what was going on boiled outside. Grinning with a ridiculous pleased look, he watched the people outside the kitchen rush to the doors... leaving the way to the cells wide open. Grabbing what he could, he sauntered back to the cells and hid some food under Jason's bowl and his own, then shifted wolf and ran back to the kitchen, turning off the stove with his nose.
~ Never mind the alarm, I set it off. It's only in the kitchen so I'm sure you can't hear it very well anyway. ~
He stretched and carefully ate a bit more, meat this time, then headed out to really cause more havoc and give Jason more time now that everyone knew the fire was a false alarm. Once the stove had been turned off, the alarm had shut itself off as well. This will be fun.
As the scientists came back, Seth stood square in their way, a giant black wolf with gleaming fangs and a snarl that ripped through the air with a terrifying force equal to the fire alarm. Seth mentally smirked as several stepped back, and he advanced forward slowly, with menace. He didn't intend to kill anyone, but it wouldn't horribly bother him if he did. These people were as human in his mind as his current form was in theirs. Not at all. These people were prey, with unique ways of defending themselves. And not a single one had a taser. Not that a taser was very effective through his thick fur. He snarled again, enjoying watching them take a step back. I am so going to pay for this later...

"I love you, too," Jason answered, feeling his heart soaring. "I love all of you."
Okay, now that that was out of the way. Time to cut to the chase. He licked his lips and swallowed before speaking again.
"I'm in a large building, that smells very strongly of pine trees,” (he winced; the smell was almost overpowering in here) “with a long hallway full of little cells leading off to other large rooms and offices, and another hallway with more cells. There are no windows, it’s all ventilated but artificially lit, which makes me think we’re likely underground. The hallway my cell is in has cells numbered eleven through twenty-six -- I'm in twenty-two -- and the cells in the other hallway are one through ten. That’s probably where the girl werewolves are kept. The wolves in my hallway are all apparently male. Seth is here too,” he added hurriedly, knowing Zeph would want to know that kind of thing. “He helped me get to a phone by distracting the workers so I could run when the tried to take us out of our cells. He’s still doing a good job, from the sounds of it.”
He smiled as the noises continued far off, then jumped at the sound of the fire alarm. Seth’s voice soon arrived in his head, calm and soothing, reassuring him that it was a false alarm. Relaxing again, Jason continued his explanation.
“The people here are scientists of some kind... they do tests on me and the others, the other prisoners. We're all werewolves, I think. They test us for things like strength and stamina, and how, why and when we transform from human to wolf and back. There must be a lot of scientists, because they always seem to come in twos and threes when they test us, and I think they take a few wolves out at a time and test them in different rooms. There are women workers as well as men. I’ve only heard one of the women speaking, and maybe seven of the men -- they seem to test us in shifts. I heard the woman telling one of the men that a girl werewolf had died… I saw them carrying her body past my cell, but I couldn’t see her face or the workers’ faces. The man said that he was going to dump the dead girl into the Neckar…”
His mind jumped into overdrive as he realized what he had just remembered. The smell of pine trees, the name of the river… The pieces flew together, and Jason yelped in epiphany. “The Black Forest! We’re in the Black Forest! Close to the Neckar, so probably where it rises… that means we’re somewhere in Villingen-Schwenningen!”
- - -
Casper had been furiously writing down details since the moment Jason's explanation began. His head jerked up at the sound of the town's name, and he looked toward the phone in elation. This was better than they could have hoped for. They would find Jason yet! "Thank you, Jason, thank you... I'm so proud of you!"
For so many reasons... staying strong, and keeping his head in this uncertain time. Having such a details-oriented son was never before such a blessing.

Zephyros' eyes remained locked on his phone. His life-line, his only connection to Jason... and it was going to be such a short time. "Where?" he asked very softly. But it didn't matter. Casper knew... Zeph curled up in the chair, focusing on Jason's words, on Jason's voice...
On the fact that Jason was alive. And they could find him. "Jason, be careful... don't let them catch you," he said softly, not even sure Jason had heard him.

Jason swallowed when he heard Zeph's whisper (but barely), casting his eyes around the office. There was only one door, which Seth was currently guarding from outside -- he could tell by the sound of snarling from the other side. If the scientists got past Seth... and he didn't want to think about that possibility... he had to have something to defend himself with. What little judo he knew would be useless against a group of grown adults. Shifting to wolf form would make fighting easier for him, but even the change would be a waste of precious seconds. He needed as many as possible for the phone call.
"I'll be careful," he whispered back, cringing at hearing the pain ringing through Zeph's voice. Yes, he would be careful, but he would also defend himself by any and all means necessary. Not to fight would be to die... and he needed to live, because Zeph could not survive without him.

Zeph nodded, "Good. Jason, I need to leave. I'll let you speak with your family... and Professor Harris is here. Come back to me."
He stood and leaned over the phone, tears falling down his face. "I love you. I'm going to let your family and Professor Harris talk to you. You have to come back to me so I can say everything I need to say. Do what it takes to get out of there in one piece... just as I would have done given the chance. I love you, Jason..."
Zeph waited only for Jason's response before leaving, locking himself in Jason's room and losing control, burying his face into his hands and clenching his jaw against his sobs. Jason's family needed the chance to talk to him, and he didn't want Jason to hear him lose control. Jason hadn't let him hear Jason lose it... Now the pain in Zeph's chest was all physical, from not sobbing and his ribs. His heart pounded in joy and terror, and he trembled with the fear of Jason getting hurt... of losing Jason.

Jason drew a deep breath. "I love you too, Zeph. I will find a way back to you, no matter what it takes." He clenched his hand around the phone, hearing a door shutting on the other end as Zeph left. Still listening hard for any changes in the situation just outside his door, he squeezed his eyes shut for a moment and spoke again, trying to keep his voice calm, but his heart was pounding painfully. Seth, please be careful out there... You are everything that's keeping me safe right now. I'm counting on you.
"Professor Harris... I don't know what to do. I'm barricaded in an office with one door and no windows. The only thing preventing me from being captured by the workers again is the door, a chair, and Seth. I'm... doing my best not to panic. It sounds like there are at least six workers out there. I don't know if I'll be able to defend myself against all of them if they get past Seth... more than likely they'll have tranq darts like they used to kidnap me."
He shivered, weighing his chances of survival. One scrawny but agile naked boy against at least half a dozen older adults, likely armed and severely pissed: slim to none. One small but agile wolf with venomous quills against the same adults: possibly slightly better, if he could get close enough to get his quills into them without getting shot with darts. That was unlikely, unless he caught them off guard, which was even less likely.

Paula had remained silent throughout the entire exchange simply because there was nothing to say. Jason and Zeph were putting their experience with kidnappings to use, and every question Paula had was answered before she could ask it. She had a very narrow area now where this place could be, and with that information, all she had to do was mount a search. In her mind, she began to think about how such a search could be mounted. Perhaps the Aetai family would purchase a helicopter for the investigation. That would make things a lot easier.
She took the phone from Zeph and spoke very slowly into it. "Jason, listen to me very carefully. You are outnumbered and out gunned. Now, these people want you alive for some reason. If you give them no reason to kill you, they won't. The important thing right now is that you remain alive so we can find you. It won't take long. You've just told us where you are. I'll stay on the line with you as long as I can, and your family's here too. Just... stay alive, Jason. We're coming."

Casper's blood ran hot in his veins when he heard Jason describing the danger he was in, and Professor Harris' reply. The fire burned with the determination of a soldier, coupled with a smoldering hope and the love of a father. He went to the hall closet and grabbed his coat, making sure his car keys were in the pocket.
"I know the town Jason is in," he told Paula, shrugging on his coat. "I can take us there."
- - -
Jason nodded, his breathing becoming more shallow and fast despite his efforts to stay calm. "Understood, ma'am." He kept his eyes on the door, his body tensing. It looked like it was going to be the scrawny naked boy against the armed scientists. If they got through. Seth was still out there, protecting him... but for how long?

"Thank you." Paula said. She handed the phone to Casper. "Keep talking to him. I'm going to try to get Zeph." She hurried over to the door that Zeph had vanished into and tried the handle. Locked. She raised a hand and knocked rapidly on the door.
"Zeph!" She called. "As soon as this call is done we're going after Jason. I assume you'll be wanting to join us. Take a moment to compose yourself, and then get out here. There's a werewolf that we need to rescue, if you're up to joining us."

Zephyros swallowed. "Just a moment, Professor," he called, his voice choked. He took several slow breaths, each a little stronger and steadier than the last. Wiping his eyes, he took another slow breath and opened the door, his eyes still somewhat red but otherwise under control.
"Alright... I'm yours, Professor Harris. Whatever you need from me as long as I am physically capable..." his fingers very lightly brushed against his ribs as an explanation of what he meant.

"Excellent." Paula nodded her head at Zeph. "Don't push yourself physically. I need you to be awake and focused for Jason, though. Don't let your emotions get the better of you." She turned and walked back over to Casper, listening intently to the sounds coming out of the phone in his hand.

Seth snarled again, his jaws snapping at the scientists and driving them further back. One ear flicked back, focused on what was going on inside. He turned forward quickly, snapping at them again and slashing the leg of one that got too close. Another stepped forward and he turned to slash that one's leg, then his body jerked a little and staggered to the side with a loud yelp. He turned and jerked the dart out with his teeth, snarling.
~ Jason, they got me! You have about two minutes.... before...~ he staggered again, then his legs buckled. Another stepped forward and he snarled, reaching to bite the man as he reached down with another needle and injected Seth with some other drug. His legs twitched violently and he screamed, the sound starting out as something more of a howl and becoming just a scream as he shifted human in an attempt to escape the pain. The moment he was human again, the tranquilizer knocked him out and he was carried away from the door.

Casper gripped the phone tightly as he took it from Paula, keeping his voice calm as he spoke. "Jason, we're coming for you. Stay calm. Don't give up hope."
He moved toward the door, still holding the phone and fishing in his pocket for his keys as he stepped into his shoes. Looking back at Paula and Zeph, he motioned them forward and headed quickly out to the car. Buckling himself inside, he fired up the engine, raising his voice to speak over it. "We're on our way to -- Jason, what was that?" he asked, wincing at the sound of the scream on the other end of the line. It had sounded somehow both animal and human, and very pained.
Once Paula and Zeph were buckled in the car as well, Casper shifted quickly to drive and floored the gas pedal, his heartbeat racing. The drive to Villingen-Schwenningen was three hours at the shortest. How much time did Jason have left?
- - -
Jason cringed at the sound of Seth's scream, a soft whimper of fear escaping his throat. "Please hurry, Father! They got Seth... I think they're taking him away to punish him. I have about two minutes before they---"
The doorknob rattled as cursing sounded from outside, and Jason tensed. Did the door unlock from both sides? Or would they just--
Bam. The door was kicked open, and the chair flew toward him amidst a cloud of wooden splinters, knocking Jason backward into the desk; one of them hit him in the forehead, leaving a bloody gash. He cried out in pain at the force of the blows to his head and his back, clutching the phone to his face -- thank goodness it was cordless. "Father!"
- - -
"Hold on, Jason!" Casper's left hand whitened on the steering wheel as he held the phone in his right. He knew he was driving like a maniac, but he had good reason, curse it! He raced through town and out toward Highway A6, his eyes on the road and his mind on his son.

Zeph almost reached for the phone, then forced himself back. Clenching his jaw, Zeph had one finger in his teeth, biting it carefully. He sat back, trembling and beginning to cough. He quickly tucked his elbow over his mouth, trying to stifle the sound that he knew would worry everyone around him.

Paula sat in the passenger seat, her hands folded in her lap. She stared out the window, listening very intently to the entire conversation but trying very hard not to look at Casper.
Remain impartial. Apply reason to the situation. Everything adds up eventually.
But that's one of my students...

Casper winced when he heard Zeph coughing behind him, sparing some thought for the young Greek. He was hurting deeply, in more ways than one, and neither of them could be helped right now except by time. He kept the phone close to his ear, listening hard and praying silently.
- - -
Jason coughed and stumbled to his feet as the scientists pressed forward in the settling dust and debris, blocking his only way out. They didn't move to grab him right away; they stood silent, watching him. There were six of them, as he'd thought before: four men and two women. But there must have been more outside at first; at least one other, perhaps two, would have gone to carry Seth away. One of the men stepped forward, clapping his hands slowly, speaking coldly to Jason.
“You and the black wolf planned this, didn’t you? Bravo. We've been underestimating your intelligence, it seems. We must look into that.”
He took a step forward, and Jason moved quickly to evade him. He held the man’s gaze with one eye as blood dripped down into the other, taking a deep breath, still holding the phone.
“What do you want from me?” he asked, knowing his father could hear him. Maybe I can buy time for Father to get here…
“Much,” the man replied, taking another step. Jason darted around to the other side of the desk, keeping that much distance between them. The door was broken now, but five of the scientists still blocked the hole in the wall. One of them still held a tranquilizer gun in his left hand.
“Jason…” his father’s voice said through the phone. “You’re doing well. Stall them for as long as you can. Keep them talking.”
As Jason heard his father’s voice and held the scientist’s gaze, he shivered, but not only because he was naked and chilled. The cold came from inside of him, and it wasn't physical. It closed around his heart like a wall of ice, locking away his love for Zeph and his family deep inside of him, leaving his mind free to focus on other things. Like staying alive, and getting out of this place.
“I will give you nothing,” he replied to the scientist, his voice like the wind in a frozen cave. Everything I have, everything I am is with those I love.
The man moved forward again, kicking aside the chair that lay in his path. Now two other men came up on either side of him, including the one with the gun. “What you do not give, we will take from you. By any means necessary.”
- - -
Casper felt cold sweat begin to bead on his forehead as he heard the voices over the phone. “Jason, be careful---”
The phone beeped in his ear; he stole a second’s glance at the screen. Low battery, it read. Please recharge soon.
No! Casper’s thoughts cried. He had to stay on the line! “Jason, listen to me. Keep stalling for time. Don’t give them reason to hurt you.”

Zeph felt tears in his eyes when he heard the phone beeping. "I swear I just charged it I don't..." he started, then bit his arm to stop himself.
Focused. Calm down, Zeph. You can't help Jason if you start freaking out... He started coughing again, his hands clenching into fists as his body jerked. Clenching his jaw, he struggled to control his breathing, gagging as a horrible metallic taste filled his mouth. So long as Jason didn't hear... Though from the sound of it, Jason had a lot more important things to worry about.

"It's not your fault." Paula said calmly, still staring out the window. "Those kinds of things happen. It'll be alright. We're on our way to find Jason now." Both boys needed to hear that, she decided. Jason needed to know help was coming, and Zeph needed to know that Jason knew.
Of course, when they got to Villingen-Schwenningen, they were still going to have to find the place where Jason was being held. Paula fingered the case file in her hand, as she had remembered to bring it with her. It was probably a good thing a detective was along for the ride...

“Put the phone down,” the lead scientist ordered, his eyes narrowing behind his glasses.
Jason did not answer, but gripped the phone tighter. The gunman raised his weapon, but Jason stood strong. Don’t give them reason to hurt you, his father had said. But Jason knew that unless he fought all six of them off -- and even if he did -- he was definitely going to get hurt, whether or not he gave them reason.
“I will only ask you once more,” the scientist told him. “Put. The phone. Down.”
The two scientists flanking the leader moved forward, and Jason darted away from them. He had stopped shivering, accustomed to the cold inside and outside of him. He saw the door out of the corner of his eye -- still blocked by three scientists. The other three kept moving toward Jason, intent on backing him into a corner.
Well, Jason thought, if he was going to be a cornered wolf, then he would fight his way out. And if blood had to be shed, so be it. These men and women were responsible for the deaths of innocent werewolves. If they were going to receive mercy, it would have to come from God. He narrowed his eyes and gritted his teeth, his whole body tensing as righteous anger boiled up in him. It would fuel him, strengthen him, but he would not let it completely control him.
- - -
Jason’s end of the phone line was silent except for his breathing, and the muffled voices Casper couldn’t quite make out. “Jason. Talk to me,” he pleaded. The phone beeped again; the battery was getting even lower.
Jason… my only son… I can’t lose you! Casper resisted the urge to bow his head in prayer, remembering that he was still driving. He dragged in a breath, keeping his eyes on the road. “I love you, son.”

Paula closed her eyes and took in the sounds coming from the phone. Every one of them was simply more incentive to find Jason. And she would find Jason. She would bring him home. Or she wasn't a very good detective at all.
Her pocket vibrated. Her phone was going off. She reached down and rejected the call without looking at it. Whoever it was, their bloody emergency could wait.

“Come now,” the scientist said softly, advancing on Jason still, “we don’t want to have to hurt you more than necessary. Certainly we don’t want to kill you. You’re unique among your kind… a most interesting specimen, with a most interesting power. You will be very helpful to us. If you co-operate.”
Jason did not answer him, paying attention to his father’s words in his ear while keeping his eye on his enemies and whispering into the phone. For a moment he allowed the wall of ice around his heart to crack. “I love you, Father.”
The lead scientist smiled coldly. “Touching. Very touching. Now that that’s out of the way.” The two men flanking him moved quickly, grabbing Jason’s arms and making him gasp as they wrenched the phone from his grasp and hung it up. They twisted Jason’s arms behind his back, forcing him to his knees. He struggled uselessly, looking up at the lead scientist in frigid defiance, clenching his teeth against the pain.
- - -
Casper jumped as Jason suddenly gasped -- he sounded pained -- and cried out into the phone. “Jaso--!”
The line went dead before he could even finish his son’s name. He lowered the phone slowly, setting it aside and clenching his now-free right hand on the steering wheel next to the left. His eyes burned with a new intensity, and he pressed down harder on the gas. He didn’t care how fast he was going – it would be all the better if the police followed him. He would lead them right to Jason.
- - -
Jason sucked in a breath through his teeth. “Why are you doing this? I have never harmed anyone, least of all your people.”
“Oh, but you have,” the lead scientist answered him levelly. “You killed one of my colleagues today. Your venom injected into his neck closed off his windpipe: he suffocated. And your friend the black wolf killed another and injured many more. We have more than adequate reason to be… angry.”
Jason’s eyes widened slightly in shock at this information, but he kept his face mostly calm. He hadn’t meant to kill the man, only to injure him and distract him… But he felt little remorse for the death. It was manslaughter, self-defence. They would have harmed him… and now they were going to harm him far worse. Perhaps even repay life for life. Sorry, Professor… I guess they do have a reason to kill me.
The wall of ice around his heart stayed firm, but the anger in him seethed and bubbled higher, mingled with a terrible fear. Zeph needs me just as much as I need him… what will become of him if I die here? And my father… he’d be heartbroken… They all would be.
Jason stayed still but not relaxed, trying to think logically, like Professor Harris would want him to do. Don’t be too passive, and don’t be too wild. Should I try to kill them? I might have to. If I can take out the gunman, that’ll be a disadvantage to them… But I’m still outnumbered six to one. I can’t move much when they’ve got me like this… maybe if I shift to wolf form I can fight them off. But they want me in wolf form so they can get at my venom. Scheisse! Professor, what do I do now?

Zeph jerked when Casper put the phone down and closed his eyes tightly, tears running down his face again. Their connection to Jason was gone. And Jason had been in trouble went the phone line went dead. His heart pounded in his chest, and he put his head in his hands, shaking. He stifled his sobs almost viciously. Paula kept telling him not to give in to his emotions...
But this is the most I've acted like... me... for a month. I'm passionate, or at least I used to be... That it should take something like this to make me feel human again... It's... pathetic. Oh Jason... please don't... Don't leave me. Please... I need you so much, so much...
The tears burned hotter, and he couldn't help but sob, coughing again and unable to be rid of the blood that came up. It splattered on his sleeve, which he kept pressed against his mouth. He didn't want Paula to see that, either. Though she wouldn't care, probably...

Bile rose in Paula's throat. The sounds of Jason being captured were almost too much for her to listen to, and she was an experienced detective. The silence was even worse. So Paula simply sat and watched the trees and buildings go by.
Her phone rang again. Irritated, she dug it out of her pocket and pressed the accept button, putting it to her ear. "I swear," she muttered. "If your life isn't in danger-"
The voice that interrupted her was cold and mechanical. Electronic distortion made it impossible to tell whether it was a male or a female, or even alive. It was a voice that was very familiar to Paula. "Speaker."
Paula's heart sank. So there it was, then. Something this big couldn't be ignored. She lowered the phone into her lap and pressed the speaker button. "I was wondering when you'd call." She said, trying to keep her voice calm. "I half expected you to have a hand in this."
A cold chuckle came through the speaker. "Why, Paula dear... you think so little of me? Every time something happens to a wolfie or a bloodsucker, it has to be me? I'm flattered, but I'll spare you the trouble. I'm not behind this little incident. I am, however, interested. Interested enough to know that you and the little bitch-boy's family and lover are hot on his trail. Is the little wind freak squirming yet? Perhaps he's catatonic in the back seat. I bet his pain is delicious."

Zeph's head jerked up, his eyes suddenly flashing gold as blood trickled a little from his lips as his chest twitched in each cough. His jaw clenched in rage as he kept coughing. Finally his head fell forward again as he kept trying to control his breathing. He was getting very sick of the word freak... and of people insulting Jason. Squeezing his eyes shut, his breath hissed slowly through his teeth. He couldn't speak, even if he had wanted to.
You filthy bastard, I'll tear you apart...

Paula's fist clenched. "You will not talk about Zeph."
"Oh, he's there." The electronic voice crooned. "How wonderful. All the better for my entertainment."
"What do you want?" Paula demanded. "We're a bit busy. Trying to find a dear friend, you know."
The voice laughed. "I am aware. In fact, I'm tracking the wolfie too. His misguided captors need to learn a few lessons about dealing with the supernatural. OH!" There was a click from the other end, as if someone had snapped their fingers. "I know. Let's make a game out of it. You like games, don't you, Paula? Or is that your traveling companion? I can never keep the two of you straight. You're just so alike in every way. Where is he, by the way? I don't hear his usual smartass comments in the background." There was a pause. "Don't tell me you've left them alone..."
Paula felt her blood pressure rising. She willed herself to remain calm. She wanted to take this person off speaker but she knew that he would change his game to something far worse than whatever he was planning if she didn't let him speak to everyone. "What sort of game?" She growled.
"A fairly straightforward one. A race to find the wolfie and his captors. Should you find them before I do, the wolfie boy is yours to take home and his captors are yours to bring to justice. But if I find them first, then all that you'll find when you get there is a bunch of dead bodies and wolf skins. Perhaps I'll make myself a new fur coat. I might even come down to skin the wolfie personally. I want to hear him howl as I peel the flesh from his bones."
