The scientists all froze in whatever they were doing, turning to look at the man in the doorway. Casper released Hargrove's chin and turned around slowly to face the stranger, hearing Jason growling softly beside him. He laid one hand on his son's head, not taking his eyes off of the stranger. Casper's face was pale, but his voice was firm.
"Why are you doing this?"

Zephyros' eyes flickered open slowly as he heard that same chilling voice as in the car. His chest burned, was an agonizing hole that sucked the air and warmth from his body, but wasn't enough at the moment to bring him down. Blinking quickly, he moved slowly to sit up and started coughing, curling up and nearly falling off the table. If Ayden hadn't moved quickly to catch him, he would have. Holding Ayden's shoulder tightly, he struggled to regain control of his breathing. His eyes flickered from their natural green back to gold, his breathing seeming to ease.
This is what caused my problems a moment ago...But better to be breathing now and staying in the hospital longer than everyone and myself dying because I couldn't get enough oxygen to help. Just don't let this kill me, please...
His eyes moved to Jason, cringing as he saw Jason's bare back, and the stitches holding the skin together. They went flat with rage, but he focused on merely keeping himself breathing. Revenge had to wait until after they were safe. Slowly getting himself off the table, he moved to kneel by Jason, wrapping his arms around the wolf's neck. Sighing softly, he lowered his head to rest on his arms, his face buried in the ruff about his neck. His Jason, who was alive and mostly well... more well than he was... and had been missing and been through so much... But now Zephyros was here to protect him, and he would die trying if that was what it took.
What is the most dangerous part of an explosion? The outrush of air that blows you back, and the shrapnel. If I surround him with a strong enough maelstrom, none of that would escape... Would I be able to stay conscious long enough to keep the explosion contained?

Casper stood in silence, the full weight of the situation weighing down on him. All of the people in this room were in danger of dying, just when they had had hope of being rescued. What was there to do?
He looked over at Zeph, who had climbed down from the table and was kneeling beside Jason's his arms around him. Casper bit his tongue, holding back a reprimand to the boy about moving when his ribs were so badly injured. He knelt down beside Jason and embraced him as well, whispering into his ear. "Jason... no matter what happens, I love you. You've made me so proud..."
Jason shifted slightly in the twofold embrace, lifting a paw and touching his father's shoulder. His father had never been the type to embrace people, except for Jason's mother; it was strange to Jason, but deeply comforting.
He lifted his muzzle to lick at Zeph's face and nuzzle his chin and cheeks, then gave a soft whine, looking into his lover's deep golden eyes and wishing that he could shift safely to human form without aggravating the stitches in his back. If this was to be the end, he wanted to be able to tell Zeph and his father one last time that he loved them.

"Why, Captain Hiller? Why is simple. I am building a perfect world. However, in order to accomplish this, I must remove those who are a blight on my new world order. The mutations. The mistakes. The freaks, and those who would consort with them. With stains like your son and his lover removed from the earth, my perfect world will at last be within my grasp."
Paula leveled the gun so that it was pointed at the silent man's head. "You can't win. You've forgotten something. It took you too long to find this place. You're slipping. You're losing your touch."
The voice chuckled. "Detective Harris. How stupid do you think I am? I've known about this lab for days. I knew that they'd taken the wolfie. Which meant that I knew you would dash to his rescue, brave soul that you are. So noble. They should give you a medal." Another laugh. "And now, just by playing the situation a little, I get the wolfie, I get his freak lover, I get his family, and now I even get the jackpot... you. It was never about Hargrove and his minions. It was never about the bitches. It was always about you. And now that you're at my mercy, I wonder... which one of your friends should I kill first? The bitch-boy? The wind freak? Maybe the ever-so-distinguished Captain..."

Zeph's lips twitched in a smile and he kissed Jason's nose. "You don't have to even try to say it, my heart. I know." He kissed him again, just holding him close. "I love you too."
He lifted his head quickly and turned, catching the blood that came from his lips on his sleeve. I'm making it worse... If I'm going to do something, in needs to be soon.
Hearing the voice made him shudder. Stains... this man almost sounded like his mother, but with more dangerous intentions. Which one to kill first... Zephyros looked at Jason, his eyes slowly growing mournful and yet cold. He was well on his way to dying anyway... And Jason hadn't shut down the way he had when he'd thought Jason was dead. If he took this man out himself, prevented the bomb from killing everyone... he'd have to stand right next to the man to be sure the envelope he was thinking of would work... There wouldn't be much left of him... His heart ached at the concept, but everyone else would be safe...
Jason could find someone else who loved him, someone who wasn't a danger, and didn't frighten his parents... His family had three other sons, but Casper... had only Jason. Casper certainly loved his daughters, but there was a difference when you had wanted a son and only had the one. And at least he wouldn't be disappointing his mother anymore. Hate me if you will... But I won't let this man kill us. Not all of us... Remember me, Jason.
He started to stand, then wavered and fell, lying limply beside Jason and unable to move. The drug Ayden had given him wasn't enough... So much for all that. At least I only thought it...
His fingers tightened into fists and he strove desperately to stand again. Again, it failed, and he gave up. His eyes started to drift closed lethargically. His breathing became more of a struggle, and he managed to get one hand on Jason's paw. I'm sorry, Jason... I only wanted to get you home. Now I've killed myself, and I can't even help keep you safe in the process... I only pray your God has mercy on you when you meet him. Because if that is what awaits after death, I have no mercy to expect.
He gave Jason a wavering smile and his eyes closed, his entire body falling pathetically limp. "L-love you..."

Jason whined in terror, standing beside Zeph and nuzzling him urgently, his ears laid flat against his head. This reminded him so strongly of Zeph's kidnapping... the sight of Zeph lying on the floor, covered in blood from his slashed throat, burned horribly in his mind's eye, and he shut his eyes tightly to try and block it out. It did little good. He could still hear himself in the memory, howling in grief over Zeph's limp form... a part of him wanted to do the same now, but knew it would only alarm the man with the phone and probably drive him to shoot.
Casper moved to kneel beside them, quickly checking Zeph over. He was breathing, but barely, and his pulse was weak, throbbing pathetically in his wrist.
“He's alive, Jason...” he whispered. For now. He looked frantically around the room, searching for Ayden with his eyes. Zeph needed him desperately… Casper turned his eyes back toward the figure in black, his eyes narrowing in anger. Jason stayed where he was, his whines fading into a terrible, aching silence.
Zeph, I love you... I love you so much… please don't leave me! I’ve already almost lost you so many times, and it almost broke me… I couldn’t bear to lose you for real. My mind, my heart, they’d break down completely, even if my body survived.
He shivered a little, opening his eyes. He had to be strong now, face his fears. No time for weeping. Turning his head to look at the black-clad stranger and the phone in his hand, he moved to stand protectively over Zeph’s body, guarding it from any attack. He was still and silent, not appearing threatening, but ready to defend himself and his lover and father to the death, if need be.

Ayden rushed over, ignoring the man with the gun and phone to check Zeph over carefully. He bit his lip hard, his face desperate and frightened. There was nothing he could do... and the equipment in this room was primarily for canines. He wasn't sure the respirator would even work for Zeph... Carefully rolling Zeph onto his back, he tilted the boy's head back to open his air passages and put his ear to the boy's chest. Breath rattled horribly in his lungs, and Ayden looked ill. He couldn't do anything to help...
He looked at the doctors in the room, his eyes suddenly cold. "Can any of you come help here?"

A few of the scientists came carefully forward to help, tearing their eyes away from the man with the phone and the gun. They set about doing what they could to help, working carefully around Jason, who was still standing protectively over him. Casper knelt nearby, watching in anxious silence, unable to do anything to help. He was forcing himself to ignore the death threats coming from the phone.
Hargrove looked at them all with a knot of guilt in his stomach, then turned toward the figure with the phone. He set his jaw in defiance, clenching his hands into fists as he spoke. "You're despicable. Completely despicable."

A low chuckle came from the phone. "Doctor Hargrove. How am I any more despicable than you? You experiment on the wolfies, in the guise of 'healing' them and 'curing' them. You are full of shit, Doctor, with all your misguided principles and disgusting methods. And I think that I'm getting tired of dealing with your half-assed attempts to redeem yourself." There was a pause. "Oh, and Detective Harris? You shouldn't leave the children alone. Especially Ian. He really can't take care of himself."
Paula's eyes flashed with hatred, and her ears went red. "How dare you.... if you've done something to them..."
"See you in hell, Detective." The voice said coldly. "Now, my friend, be a dear and kill them all. Start with the Doctor. No, wait. Shoot out his kneecaps first. I want to hear him scream."
The man pointed the gun at Hargrove's knee and fired. In the split second when his attention was directed at Hargrove, Paula took her chance. She aimed her weapon and fired. The shot struck the cell phone directly on the screen. It shattered, sparks and bits of metal flying. The man howled with rage and pulled his hand back. The glove was torn, and blood dripped down onto the floor. He moved his own gun to point directly at Paula.
"Bitch..." He hissed through the mask.
That was as far as he got before Paula fired again. The man crumpled and lay on the ground, blood pooling from the hole in his forehead. Paula lowered the gun and let out a sigh. However, the voice on the phone's words were still running through her head.
You shouldn't leave the children alone. Especially Ian. He really can't take care of himself.

Dr. Hargrove crumpled to the floor as the bullet slammed into his left kneecap, shattering the bone. He refused to give the man on the phone the satisfaction of hearing him scream; the only sound that emerged from his mouth was a gasp of pain. He heard another gunshot as he went down, and lifted his head just in time to see Detective Harris shoot the stranger, who fell to the floor with a hole in his forehead amid the debris of the shattered phone.
Jason flinched at the sounds of the gunshots and of bones cracking. The smell of blood tainted the air ever more strongly. The man with the phone was dead, and he could heard Hargrove panting in pain behind him. He turned his attention back to Zeph, seeing his father turn to acknowledge the doctor's condition as a few of the scientists who weren't occupied with helping Zeph came forward to help their leader.
“Never mind me,” Hargrove choked out, his mind a haze of pain as he struggled to focus on Casper's face through the tears in his eyes. “Take care of your wounded, take your son and go. Just... go.” He sucked in a shaky breath, looking around at Jason and Seth. “I don't expect you to forgive me... I'm not asking you to. I know what I've done in the name of helping others... I have no excuses.”
Jason heard Hargrove's words, and turned briefly away from Zeph to face the doctor. Hargrove met his eyes, his face a mask of sorrow. “I’m so sorry…”
Jason studied the man in silence, feeling that his words were sincere. He gave a slow nod of his head, moving one paw to place it carefully on the doctor’s shoulder. He was reminded of a moment he’d spent with Jonathan, when he had forgiven him for fighting with him and ruining his clothes. This man wasn’t so much unlike Jonathan… there was remorse in him, and goodness.
Casper noticed the gesture, looking from Jason to Hargrove. “I believe that means Jason forgives you.”
Jason nodded again, and Hargrove managed a smile. “Thank you.” His eyes trailed over to Seth, quietly seeking the same forgiveness, but not really expecting it.

Seth just looked at him coldly, twitching when Demetri elbowed him in the stomach and hit the burn caused by his torture. "Jason is a bigger man that I am. Memories linger too strongly in my mind... especially as you were just trying to kill me a few minutes ago..."
He rubbed at the burns lightly, his blue eyes still icy.
Ayden ignored what was going on, focused purely on Zephyros and his condition. There had to be some way to move the boy safely... Carrying him would be dangerous, it might jostle his ribs, but what other choice did they have? He put his fingers carefully to a pulse point in Zeph's neck, counting the beats of his heart. Biting his lip, he looked carefully at the boy's ribs and closed his eyes. The fact that Zeph was breathing at all was somewhat impressive... He really didn't want to die... But Ayden wasn't sure how to prevent him from dying... "Do you have a stretcher? Or could an ambulance get down here?"
He never looked up, checking Zephyros constantly. An ambulance would be preferable... They'd be able to handle what might go wrong. If Zeph lasted long enough for them to get there...

Hargrove was silent except for his pained breathing, his eyes sorrowful, but accepting. It was asking quite a lot of either of the boys to forgive him; one out of two would have to do. He doubted he would have forgiven himself if he had been in their place.
Three of the scientists obediently stood and left the room at Ayden's words, first indicating that one of them was going to phone for an ambulance while the other two got a stretcher. Casper remained still and silent, his eyes moving from Hargrove to Jason to Zeph. Zeph did not look good at all. Jason stood near him, whining softly, looking afraid to even nuzzle him for fear of jostling his ribs. Casper reached up and scratched his son's ears gently, speaking softly. "He's going to be alright, Jason."
The scientists returned quickly, two of them carrying a stretcher between them, which they rushed over to Zeph and Ayden. The third stood nearby. "The ambulance is on its way. They'll be here soon. We need to get him--" he nodded to Zeph "--out of this room."

Ayden looked at him. "Can we not leave him here until they get here? I'm afraid to move him if we don't have to..."
He looked back at the young man on the floor, hanging on his every breath almost as much as Jason was. He watched each breath, looked into Zephyros' pale face for any sign of life. If it wasn't for the rise and fall of the boy's chest, Ayden would have thought he'd already died. He looked at Jason, managing a slight smile. "Everything is going to be okay..." he said, his voice wavering a little. "We're getting help for him."

It took a few minutes for the ambulance to arrive (along with a veterinarian), and for the paramedics to get down to the lab, led by a handful of scientists. They started to get Zeph and Hargrove onto stretchers, and looked rather confusedly at Jason and his father. "Is that... a wolf?"
"Of course not," Casper lied through his teeth. "He's a German Shepherd and husky crossbreed. And he's in great need of medical attention as well." He nodded to the vets who had accompanied the ambulance. They started to lead Jason out as well, safely collared and leashed; he whined fretfully, looking over at Zeph, not wanting to be separated from him for any length of time. His father scratched his ruff and spoke softly to reassure him. "You'll be together again soon, Jason. It's alright."
Jason whimpered again, but allowed himself to be led away as his father followed behind him and the vets, with the paramedics behind them.
"For the record, Detective Harris," Hargrove spoke up from his stretcher, looking around for the detective, "as soon as this is over I'm turning myself in to the poli... aaand she's not even listening. Lovely." He sighed softly, looking up at the ceiling and waiting to get to the ambulance.

Seth looked at Hargrove dryly. Well, the man was sincere... but that didn't change the way he'd treated Seth even as Seth had looked at him in human form. He gently touched Zeph's cheek as they got him in the ambulance, looking at his friends. "Now what?"
Ayden shrugged, "We stay until we know they'll both be okay?"
Demetri nodded, wrapping an arm around Seth's shoulders. "There's nothing more we can do for them for now. I'll get you and everyone not hurt or riding with those who are hurt back to town, and get you cleaned up."
Seth paused, then smiled at his friends, chuckling as Demetri pulled him closer. "I don't deserve friends like you."
Ayden snorted, "Darn right. And you are going to let me work on those burns once you've gotten cleaned up."

"Yes, yes. You do that." Paula said dismissively, waving her hand. Her mind was on other things, specifically the voice on the phone's cryptic warnings about Ian and the others. Leaving them alone had been a mistake. A mistake Paula would gladly make again, and one that had saved Jason and Seth's lives, but a mistake nonetheless. He would know where they were, she knew it. If he was smart enough to trap her, than he was smart enough to trap them.
Paula approached Casper and pulled him aside, speaking softly. "I need to go. I've called a taxi and it's on it's way up here. Should be here any minute. Now that I'm sure that the boys will be alright I need to head off." She glanced over at the road, watching for the taxi. "He's got a bigger plan than just this. I think he wanted me out of the way, so he could get at the group I've been with."

Casper nodded. "Of course, Detective. Thank you for coming to rescue my son. My family is in your debt. God be with you, wherever you go. I'll pray for your safety, and that of your other charges." He smiled. "I'm sorry we couldn't have met under happier circumstances."

"I am as well." Paula said as she caught sight of the taxi working it's way towards her. "Perhaps one day I'll convince the Headmistress to host a parents' weekend at the school. Or perhaps not. She's a stubborn woman. Goodbye, Captain Hiller, and may God protect you." With that, she strode away from Casper and wordlessly entered the taxi, slamming the door behind her.
"To the airport." She ordered. The driver nodded and the car sped off. Paula's mind strayed from the family she left behind. They would be fine. Paula had bigger fish to fry.
The voice on the phone was finally going down. Paula would see to it personaly.

Zephyros woke very slowly, coming out of the darkness and struggling to remember what had happened. Where he was. His eyes opened slowly, staring at the ceiling blankly. He couldn't remember anything, not even his name or where he was. There was only one word he could think of.
"Jason...?" he breathed, turning his head to look at the room. It was empty... for some reason that made his heart ache. A nurse came in, asking him something in a language he didn't understand and he shook his head. Looking up at the ceiling again, he closed his eyes with a sigh. Still, there was only one thing he could remember... a name, and pale blue eyes and a smile that made his heart sing... but not through the ache he felt. He was missing everything... and he was alone, with people who didn't speak a language he did...
What languages did he speak? What country was he in? And why was he in a hospital with so much machinery attached to him? Had he been hurt? And where was this Jason he couldn't stop thinking about? ...Was his affection one-sided? It probably wouldn't be the first time...

Another nurse walked into the room, coming softly and quickly over to Zeph's bed. Giving him a quick once-over with her eyes, she leaned over him and called out softly. "Zephyros?"

His eyes flickered open. What an odd name... but she said it like it was his. So my parents think they have a sense of humor. Lovely.
"I'm awake..." he said softly. "Who am I? I can't remember anything." Is this Jason real?

"Your name is Zephyros Aetai," the nurse answered, taking a step closer to his bed. "You're here visiting a friend of yours, and his family, the Hillers. They'll be glad to know you're awake. I'm going to tell them now." She crossed to the phone, picking it up and dialling the Hillers' number. "Hello, Mr. Hiller?"
- - -
Casper got up quickly to get the phone, coming back to where his family were sitting in their hotel room: Heidi and Helen were on the couch, and Ariadne was kneeling on the rug next to Jason, who was still in wolf form. "Yes? Who is speaking?"
- - -
The nurse smiled as she gave Casper her name. "Zephyros is awake, but he's having difficulty remembering what happened to him," she told him. "It would do him good if you would come."
- - -
Casper smiled as well at the glad news. "He -- Zeph's awake? That's wonderful! Thank you. We'll be there as soon as we can."
Jason sat up quickly at the sound of Zeph's name, his ears pricked and tail wagging. Casper hung up the phone and knelt down by his son, rubbing his ears gently. "I'm sorry, Jason, they won't allow you in the hospital as you are."
Jason whined, his ears folding back as his tail stopped wagging. He hung his head sadly, and Casper sighed, looking into his son's eyes. "I know how much you want to see him, but it simply isn't possible right now. You're both still healing."
Jason sighed as well, looking away from his father in silent, helpless frustration. Casper scratched his ears again before standing up and heading toward the closet to get his coat. "I'll be back soon."
Ariadne rose quickly to her feet and stepped after him. "May I come?"
"Of course," Casper consented. "Come on."
- - -
Casper quietly opened the door to Zeph's room in the hospital, looking around as he stepped into the room, with Ariadne behind him. Zeph was lying quietly in his bed, and a nurse stood nearby; she looked up and smiled when he and Ariadne entered. "It's good to see you, Captain Hiller."
"Thank you," Casper smiled, coming and sitting down in a chair beside Zeph's bed, and looking down at the young mage. "Hello, Zephyros. You may not remember me. My name is Captain Casper Hiller. This is my daughter, Ariadne." He gestured to her where she stood beside him, and she smiled in greeting.

Zeph nodded a little, his green eyes confused. He managed a hesitant smile. "I... don't remember anything, really. Might I ask how I know you? Who am I visiting? What happened? My chest hurts... I haven't told them yet. My mind is only beginning to clear up, and I don't want to live in a fog that's worse than the one I'm in. Pain isn't a problem... I can live with pain."
Neither of these had the blue eyes he remembered, but he hadn't really expected to see this Jason he was remembering. Somehow it seemed distant, like he was remembering something from years ago, or even a dream. It wouldn't surprise him if it was just a dream. It seemed like that was the kind of world he lived in. Dreams and memories.

The nurse left the room softly, leaving the three of them alone to talk while she found a doctor to help with Zeph's chest. Casper gave Zeph a rather sad smile.
"You're my son Jason's boyfriend; you came here to visit him earlier this month, after he stayed with you for a month in Greece. Jason was kidnapped; you accompanied me in rescuing him, and you were badly injured in the struggle. Don't worry, Jason is alive and doing well, but he isn't able to come and see you yet. He misses you terribly."

Zeph nodded, smiling a little. "So... I'm sorry, I was afraid the 'Jason' I was remembering was just a figment of my imagination. Does he have pale blue eyes? And an adorable 'lost puppy' expression?"
His tone was still almost sad. He wished he could have seen Jason himself, but he could understand that he couldn't. He looked out the window with a distant expression... a lost look. Somehow, it still didn't seem... real. Like this was really just a dream. It wasn't a good dream, either. In a good dream, this Jason he remembered could have come to see him.
