I don't think so, but then... you wouldn't see them as strengthened, because they have always been so. I am quite certain you see what others do not... and just don't realize it. I think it would be easier to have been born without it... rather than losing it later. I would not know, I still have all five senses... though taste is one I got to the point I would be glad to lose. For example... the type of blood that interests me the most is the one I try to avoid as best as I can...
He didn't want to think of why he avoided that blood type... So he managed to put it out of his mind. Sorry, doing it again. I told you, centuries of habits are REALLY hard to break! he said, his grin light and teasing.

I'm sure they would be, Diana answered, mirroring his grin. I don't blame you.
She sat still for a few moments, pondering Valérian's words. She wondered whether she really did see and feel things that others couldn't... this would be worth looking into in the future.

Valérian glanced out the window again. It seemed this conversation was winding down... though he would like to think he'd just made a friend. The moon was rising... full. He closed his eyes, sighing. Such light... He watched his pale skin catch the light and reflect it back, making him almost glow. It did the same thing under blacklight, which in clubs where vampires didn't need to hide made for a very cool effect... but it got annoying.
He sighed, turning his face away from the light as what almost appeared like a halo fromed around him. And this was why he avoided sunlight.

Diana watched in curious fascination as the light from the rising moon gave the vampire's skin an almost silvery glow; it was an ethereally beautiful effect, like light shining out from inside a pearl. If moonlight did that much, she thought, how much more could sunlight do? Valérian probably avoided it more often than most, and for good reason--the only other person Diana knew of who glowed like that was a student in the university, Aye Goyan, though that was a completely different kind of glow.

Valérian noticed her expression and gave her a wry smile. Now, what might be causing that dazzled expression? he teased.

Diana blushed. Please excuse me for staring... but I've never seen anything quite like that before. What the light does to your skin is beautiful.

Except when you are trying to hide... Sometimes I think that the author of those Twilight books... Stephanie something, right?... I think she saw me in the light once and decided it would be perfect. Though as you can see, it is not like diamonds. he signed, his expression dry. It was a weakness, not a strength. For goodness sake... he GLOWED. He looked at the silvery light around him with disgust.

Diana nodded. I can see how it would be troublesome for you to be in the sunlight, more so than for other vampires. If moonlight does that much, how much worse is it in the sunlight?

...It's much brighter. This is really rather faint, because the window blocks so much. In the sunlight, the halo is much larger, and brighter... but it's still silvery. I think it's because my skin is so white it only reflects that light. The light hurts my eyes, too. Like snow-blindness except it is my own skin causing the extra light.
He shrugged a little. At least here it won't get me killed like it might have at home.

You're not the only one here who glows, Diana told him with a smile. One of the university students also glows, but that is likely because of her magic ancestry. And she glows all the time, not just in bright light.

That has got to be a bit of a nightmare... though I suppose she doesn't have to worry about being afraid of the dark, he said thoughtfully. Watching the light that his skin reflected dance on the walls, he sighed. Quite the weakness he had. In a people that tried to spend their lives hiding, he stood out like a candle in the dark.

Diana smiled. They don't call her 'the human nightlight' for nothing. I'm not sure what she thinks of her glow, but the other students seem to be amused by it.

She's probably just used to it. Valérian shrugged. I mostly am too, but I have had far longer to grow accustomed to it.

That's true, Diana nodded.
The rising moon had told her that the evening was wearing on; Diana knew she should be getting to bed, or at least back to her apartment. Rather reluctantly she shifted position, as though intending to stand.
It's getting late, and I'm sure we both have classes to teach tomorrow, she signed with a smile. It's been a pleasure getting to know you. I hope we can chat again soon. She stood up slowly, thinking, And hopefully I won't turn the whole conversation into an angst trip.

Valérian smiled. Indeed. Sleep well, Diana. Thank you for the conversation, it was pleasant. And I truly do mean it. Rarely do I have friendly conversations that last any length of time. I appreciate it.
He watched her leave, his expression pensive. He wasn't tired at all... when she was out of sight, he turned back to his book, reading by the moonlight his own skin magnified to a brightness that made it possible.
