Kemekin let out a slow breath of air and summoned his magic tentatively on the exhale. It came, thankfully, not as tendrils but as a mist, which permeated his roommate's clothing, skin, and internal tissue. Supporting structures first. Kemekin found the bones after a few moments of searching. They were dissolving raggedly in places to mimic breaks.
Don't do that, Kemekin said mentally. He cupped his magic around the bones and compressed them back to their solid state. Cells reconfigured, hardened, and settled. His magic pulsed excitedly at these signs of life. Kemekin winced and willed it to calm down. His magic retorted with a jolt that stung his fingertips. Kemekin bit his lip and pushed the magic forward, to find places where the skin had layered bruised tissue over itself, especially around the lungs and shoulders. This extra tissue was raw, angry, unnatural. Kemekin's magic took on this obstacle greedily, dissolving the matter to nothing. On it went, opening cinched vessels, easing the stomach's convulsions.
Kemekin's hands began to shake beneath Ellie's.

Aramis groaned and thrashed beneath his roommate's hands. All he knew was everywhere he'd healed Ian after the boy's beating was hurting again, like it had when he'd healed Ian the first time. His legs and pelvis hurt too, everywhere Jason had broken a bone, and in his ribs where Ian had broken them. There was pain around his lungs and he screamed once, jerking. The pain, on top of his fever and everything else he'd faced in Ellie's disappearance overwhelmed him and he blacked out. Somehow the pain still reached him, and in his unconscious state he thrashed worse, trying to get away. He felt like he was being torn apart from the inside out.

Kemekin's brow furrowed and his magic flinched. He willed it forward. It went reluctantly. Soon, Aramis's skeleton was completely mended, the false fissures filled and extra, magic-induced growth was scraped away. Other injuries blended into nothing beneath Kemekin's fingers, which were beginning to pain the young mage now. Kemekin squinted his eyes and grabbed the wrist of one hand with the other, feeling his magic beginning to crystallize in his own skin. A tingling began in his wrist.
Kemekin gave his magic one last push, clearing away the residue of Aramis's magic from the older boy's system. What was left was a fever, a headache, a lingering soreness. Kemekin's entire body was struck with a violent pang and he gasped, pulling away from the bedside and stepping back several strides, cradling one arm with the other. The hand he had used to finish the job twitched and shook where he cradled it. He could feel his magic throbbing, pulsing within.
"There's nothing else there," he announced in a strangled voice. He looked to Aramis. The young man was unconscious, though his breathing was no longer so ragged and the lines on his wrists had faded to nothing. This was the first time he had healed someone. Something told him that this was not what Elliestraaeln experienced when she used her magic.
"You can finish the rest, right Auntie?" he asked, sinking into the Healer's desk chair.

Ellie had placed her hands to either side of Aramis's face before Kemekin asked. She eyed her nephew, watching the pain on his face slowly ebb away. Wild was his magic, and while it was something akin to her own it was also an opposing force, something that undid while Ellie's rebuilt.
Aramis's fever cooled beneath her fingers. The soreness would ease away with a good night's rest. She would have to heal Kemekin next, she decided, but at the moment her relief was that Aramis was recovering. Ellie felt a huge rush of pride in her nephew, and a smile broke across her features as she pulled away from Aramis. The young mage slept now, how comfortably she could not know, though by now his symptoms were nothing worse than what one would expect from the flu.
"He should be better by tomorrow morning," she said aloud, signing it for Diana's benefit, as she'd suddenly remembered that the professor was still present. "Thank you, Diana. And thank you, Kemekin." She reached forward to fold Aramis's hands neatly across his stomach, then pulled a blanket over him.

Diana had watched the whole healing process in a worried silence, helpless to do much of anything to help. As shocked as she was that Ellie had risked both boys' safety in order to help Aramis, she couldn't help but be relieved that it had apparently gone according to plan. Aramis seemed fine now, sleeping peacefully.
She read Ellie's hands and signed You're welcome[/color] in reply as she moved toward Kemekin. The healer's nephew looked shaken and exhausted, but he had done well in helping Aramis. Diana quickly moved to get him a glass of water, hoping it would help to calm his nerves.

Kemekin took the glass that was offered him and managed to half-smile at Professor Harrows. He took a few sips and set it upon the desktop, letting his eyes drop to his knee, upon which his other hand rested. It twitched angrily as he watched it, though by now the pain had receded to a numbness that extended up into his shoulder.

((The next day...))
There was blood everywhere. Aramis tightened his hands around Zeph's wrists, feeling the pulse beneath his fingers slowly fading. His hands tightened further, trying to stop the flow of blood... and it seemed to work. Aramis started trying to close the wounds, close the veins and pull the tendons together... then froze as he realized why the blood had stopped flowing...
Zeph's white face somehow seemed even whiter than it had before. His body was utterly limp... and his chest didn't move. Aramis whimpered, pulling one hand away from Zeph's wrists to see if any blood flowed, and to search Zeph's neck for a pulse. He stood and staggered away, shaking. Jason held Zeph close, looking at Aramis pleadingly, desperately... Aramis backed away further, shaking his head, wringing his hands, running them through his hair and soaking it with the blood that covered his hands.
"I can't... I was too late... I... I should have watched him more closely... it's all my fault!" he wailed, turning to run back to his dorm. The hallway shattered, like a mirror, and the world turned red, each piece of shattered room showing blood, and Jason's heartbroken face, and Zeph's lifeless form. Aramis fell to his knees, holding his head. He started to feel cold and looked at his own wrists...
Blood... so much blood! He tried to stand and his legs collapsed, sending spasms of pain through his body. He fell again, and his lungs burned, and yet all the warmth was fading from his body... Aramis tried to scream, and when no sound came, put his hands to his throat. He spasmed, feeling a huge gash across his throat.
'it's all your fault. You knew something was wrong... you couldn't help Ian, you weren't strong enough to help Jason, and you were too late, too slow, too ignorant for Zeph. Face it, you aren't good enough.'
Aramis tried to whimper, thrashing as the pain burned through his body... and all the red around him began fading into black...
Aramis jerked violently one last time and sat up, screaming. His hands felt frantically at his throat, his nails cutting into the skin. As he pulled them away and saw the blood, he jerked backwards, falling off the bed. He screamed again, huddled tightly in a ball on the ground. Whimpering, he curled tighter, shaking violently.

Ellie rushed to the boy, pulling his hands out to his sides and setting him up so she could hold him against her. "Aramis! Aramis, honey, calm down-- it's okay, breathe." A soothing wave of energy flowed from her to the student. She forced herself not to react with panic to his hysterics and took a deep, calming breath. She constructed her magic into ribbons, easing them around Aramis's muscles to ease his shaking, around the scratches to mend the skin, and into his lungs to calm his breathing. It would do him no good to hyperventilate.
"Shhhh, there now. Calm down, it's okay. You're okay, you're okay." This was the mantra she continued to coo in his ear, rocking him gently back and forth as if he were a distressed child.

He pressed his forehead against her shoulders, still shaking. "There was so much blood... so much... He was so cold, and he was dying and I didn't know what to do! Death doesn't bother me, I grew up on a ranch. I've run several slaughters, but the fact that it was human... I don't know..."
Taking several quick breaths, he shivered a little and took another deep breath. "And I... Jason was so upset... He blacked out on me... I was so scared..."

Ellie smoothed Aramis's hair and continued to soothe him using both magic and voice. "Both Zephyros and Jason are fine now. They're healthy and alive. It was just a nightmare, Aramis. You're okay and they're okay. Breathe, sweetie..."
She straightened and pulled Aramis to his feet. She squeezed his shoulders and smiled at him. "You're not hurting any more, right?"

Aramis shook his head slowly, "No. I'm okay... I think I'm okay..." He pulled his arms free a little and rubbed them a bit, shivering. "Please give me some warning if you need to leave again... please... I can't do that again. I can't..."

Ellie furrowed her brow and pulled Aramis into a hug. "It won't happen again," she promised, though the truth was she still was quite unsure as to what exactly had happened to her. Nonetheless she held Aramis out at arm's length, giving him a quick once over. "And you won't have to go through that again. I will personally make sure of that."

He nodded a little, swallowing. "Okay... I can't... can't heal properly... My wrists hurt so much until... until last night. I don't understand what happened. I remember you giving me tea and trying to throw up and then...nothing until that horrible nightmare..."
Aramis shuddered again, closing his eyes tightly. "The only reason it really distressed me is I wasn't sure what I was doing... what if I was hurting more than I helped? Animals are different from people... and plants are ridiculously simple. Zeph's... incident scared me more than anything else..." He shivered violently again, shaking his head rapidly.
