Vincent stood firm, resolute but compassionate. "Sometimes there is no gentle way to say things, Paul. And yes, for the record, I would have. But I am sorry it had to be like this." He paced a little as he spoke, back and forth in front of the couch.
"There are several things you need to know. I don't know what you may have read or heard about werewolves, but many of the facts have been distorted. Werewolves are not the monsters we believe them to be. Yes, they are harmed by silver; yes, they do transform into wolves, and yes, the transformations are often extremely uncomfortable, even painful. No, the changes aren't limited to the night of the full moon. They can be triggered by a few different things, often anger, fear or stress. In time, Natalie will be able to control them, and change at will."
He paused for a breath. "I hope you're following this. I don't want to have to repeat myself more than necessary." Though it might be helpful to get it to sink in...

Ian still couldn't see what was happening, due to Natalie's body sobbing her eyes out into her mother's shoulder. He heard Esther shift, presumably to look at Vincent. "You mean our daughter... is going to be this... for the rest of her life?"
"And do her a favor." Paul grumbled, and Ian heard him collapse into a nearby chair. "Try to answer without being an ass."

Vincent's eyes narrowed slightly at Paul's remark, but his voice was calm as he answered Esther. "As far as I know, there is no way to completely stop the transformations. But, as I said, Natalie will learn to control them, in time."

There was silence in the living room for a long time. Finally, it was Natalie's body that spoke. "I..." She sobbed into her mother's shoulder. "I want him to leave."
Ian heard Paul shift a bit. "I think she's right. You should leave."

Vincent sighed softly and nodded, his eyes saddening. "As you wish. I can see I'm no longer welcome here, and I understand why." He took a few steps backward and added, "But please believe me when I tell you that I wish you nothing but the best. Goodbye, everyone." He turned and walked to the door, stepping into his shoes and leaving the house without another word.
What had he expected? That they'd welcome him in with open arms and accept everything he was going to tell them? No, of course not. There was already enough of a rift between them because of Christine's death, and it was inevitably going to get worse before it got better... but none of this was his fault. Even if Paul and Esther weren't outright blaming him, Paul at least was taking out his anger on Vincent.
He climbed into his car and drove off, his heart heavy and his mind clouded. It was going to be a long drive home.

Times have changed. Natalie assured Ian. I've tried to patch things up with Uncle Vincent, and Dad isn't as... stressed as he used to be.

I hope so... Ian thought back, and that was the end of their discussion about that particular incident.
