Alex bit his lip. He'd been more interested in Hitoshi's answer- wait, did he just- Alex blushed slightly and smiled back at Hitoshi.
"Well, thank you for telling us."

It looked to Hitoshi as though Alex was blushing, which was...endearing, to say the least. And something about the way he bit his lip drew Hitoshi's eyes to Alex's mouth in an uncomfortable manner. He glanced back to his uncle quickly.
"Well, um...if that's all you have you say..." Hitoshi subtly tried to hint for his uncle and Smoke to get out, because the room was getting too warm again.

Smoke couldn't help but smile at the looks those two were giving each other. It was positively adorable.
"Sure. Just say something if either of you have any questions."
He looked at Tristan.

Tristan had also noticed the strange looks they had been exchanging, but he chose to ignore it. He supposed he should count himself lucky that Hitoshi would be with someone like Alex, rather than someone like Thrall. At least Alex would be somewhat safe...
"Alright, Smoke, let's get moving," he muttered, standing and stretching. "Hitoshi, Alex, feel free to come to us if you need to talk about this destiny thing again."
...and if they had any questions about the other thing, well, he'd push that on Smoke. He knew more about that, anyway.

"We will. Have a nice night."
Alex watched them leave. After they were safely out of the room and the door was closed, he turned to Hitoshi. He felt the need to say something, but he didn't know what.
"Uhm," he thought. "Your uncle's an interesting fellow."

Hitoshi shrugged. "I suppose so." He glanced up at Alex, and after a moment of quiet, he asked, "What do you think about all this? This...fate-bound partner, destiny battle with a side of betrayal? It sounds...ludicrous to say the least, but it's hard not to believe it, considering...well..."

"Considering what?" Alex attempted the best coquettish smile he could manage, which under the circumstances, was an impressive one. "I don't believe either of them mentioned anything about a... fate-bound partner. In fact, I'm certain no one has said anything at all about how or why or wherefore we might be in this together other than you, so I have to wonder..."
As he spoke, he walked closer to Hitoshi, smiling the whole way.

Didn't they? Hitoshi was sure he remembered something about it...
"It was implied," Hitoshi responded quickly. He had meant to be sharp, but it had come out as somewhat of a resigned grumble. Despite himself, he slid to the side on the bed, making room for Alex to sit. "What do you have you wonder?"

"Nope. I remember very clearly." Rather than sitting down, Alex stopped just inside of Hitoshi's personal space and looked down at him.
"I just wonder where you got the idea, Hitoshi. You keep doing such odd things..." he said softly.

Hitoshi suddenly felt remarkably uncomfortable with Alex so close and looming over him. He had to lean slightly too keep Alex's face within the lens of his glasses. His heart felt like it was about to pound out of his chest.
"Perhaps you simply aren't reading between the lines," he replied severely. He couldn't think of any logical reason this harmless little mortal would be making him so nervous, and that fact alone had him somewhat on edge.

"I'm reading plenty of things." Alex leaned over to match Hitoshi, carefully keeping out of range of actually touching him.
"It's been so awkward," he frowned slightly, biting his lip again. "I just keep thinking that I don't even really know you, but I can't get you out of my mind. Has that ever happened to you?"
He sat down close beside Hitoshi. "I know I must seem so forward, but it's your fault. You worry me. I wonder if you're doing something to me intentionally. Are you, Hitoshi?"

At once, something seemed to click. Someone he hardly knew... Earlier, Alex had said something about "there was only one boy he ever wanted that he didn't know" or something of the like... Could he mean...?
Something about the way he bit his lip was terribly distracting, and Hitoshi had to force himself to look away.
"I'm not doing anything, to my knowledge," Hitoshi whispered. "Does it seem like I'm doing anything?"

Alex leaned against Hitoshi's side and, with a sly grin on his face, spoke softly right next to his ear.
"You're doing a lot of things. You're not brushing me off, or telling me to go away, or giving any indication whatsoever that your silly cousin was wrong."
(...In retrospect, that may have been the wrong thing to say.)

Hitoshi froze momentarily, and suddenly the entire room was on fire. The smart thing to do, he reasoned, would be to jump off of the bed and move toward the open space near the desks where he would be able to breathe.
However, for whatever reason, Hitoshi was unable to do the smart thing in this instance. He found himself scooting rapidly toward the back of the bed, where he was still incredibly vulnerable. And terribly, terribly trapped.
"I don't see what Thrall has to do with this," he snapped. Somewhere in Hitoshi's head, a little red light was going off...

Alex scoot over to the middle of the bed and sat looking at Hitoshi in wonder.
"You really don't get it? Seriously? How?"

Hitoshi got that there was another male on his bed making very obvious overtures in his direction. Hitoshi got that this was incredibly similar to what Thrall had been insinuating only a few days ago. Hitoshi also got that, for some reason, he was making no move to flee the situation. He wasn't that naive. However, Hitoshi decided, it might just be best to ignore it. It wasn't the best course of action, of course...
"I don't understand what you're insinuating," he replied.

"I'm not insinuating anything at this point," Alex said grumpily, then frowned for real and looked away. Why was Hitoshi doing this? Every response so far Alex had thought was more evidence that the boy was attracted to him. Was he wrong? He was never that wrong.
"Look. Maybe I'm completely barking up the wrong tree here, but- I don't-" he sighed. "You intrigue me, okay? You're intelligent and interesting and for some reason I find you ungodly attractive, and I honestly can't stop thinking about you, and you keep doing things that-"
He looked back up to Hitoshi, trying to note some reaction. "Am I misinterpreting? I thought you felt the same way, and just wanted me to, uhm, make the first move. I-" and he flushed bright red and covered his face with his hands. "Oh god, I'm so sorry, I've made a complete ass of myself."
He felt about like he wanted to crawl under a rock and die, or at least run away and join a monastery or something, but actually moving off the bed seemed like it would probably end in even worse embarrassment.

As reason took its rightful place once more, Hitoshi realized that he had most definitely done something wrong. He suddenly felt extremely guilty... He felt the sudden impulse to hug the boy. He settled for grabbing his arm.
He looked at Alex, really looked at him, and sighed. "I...don't know," he replied. "I don't know what's to blame on that 'destiny' nonsense. I don't know why I attacked Thrall for what he said. I don't know. For the first time in my life, I really don't know. Just...please, don't do that--I don't want you to cry or anything."

Alex sat unmoving, peering out at Hitoshi from behind his hands. There was a noise that may have been a sharp breath or a sniffle.
"I don't understand you," he said muffled-ly. "What do you want me to do?"

"I don't know right now," he replied honestly. "I think I need to think about this, at least for a few minutes."
He grabbed Alex's hands, pulling them away from his face. "You're not crying, are you?" he asked, his voice saturated with concern.

"Uhm," Alex said. Okay. Hitoshi was confused. Maybe that was the whole thing- Hitoshi certainly seemed intelligent, and he'd like to think so, but maybe that didn't mean as much with this. He could sort of deal with that. He wasn't quite to the point of crying, though he'd been close, and he still felt somewhat embarrassed...
Without thinking about it, he slid his hands into Hitoshi's and squeezed them, feeling overwhelmed by the concern and having the pretty boy right next to him. "Ah- Okay. But- do you understand what I said?"
...
"Are you even attracted to men?" Alex raised one eyebrow skeptically, then sniffled again. He felt a little better, though.

Hitoshi paused for a moment. "I don't think the situation would have improved if you were female," he replied carefully. "And I understand what you said. I'm fairly certain, anyway."
Hitoshi was aware he wasn't particularly interested in women, but he had never given thought to the possibility of that implying that he was attracted to men. Or, he reasoned, it could just be Alex. That was a fairly logical idea.
Being attracted to someone, Hitoshi decided, wasn't the problem. The problem was all of those other terrible feelings that attraction seemed to bring with it. And it didn't look like those feelings were going to go away just because he decided to push them to some dark corner.
Alex's hands were warm, warmer than his own...

Alex smiled. This hadn't gone remotely according to plan, but it seemed to have worked out okay anyway; and this way, at least, hopefully things would be less awkward. Or something. He was determined to be an optimist, if only because the alternative seemed unbearable.
"Take all the time you like to think, then, but when you come to a conclusion, I want to hear it."
He resisted the urge to kiss the boy on the cheek.

"Of course," Hitoshi replied. "It would defeat the purpose if I didn't."
Hitoshi paused for a moment, looking at Alex. "Did you finish all your summer assignments? If not, I can help you with them. Especially for the writing portions, most of the teachers have a method -- this one only cares that you have the right information, this one is a grammar nazi, this one will give you more leeway if the quality of your writing is good..." He smiled. "It's easier to get a good grade when you know what effort is necessary and what is just useless."

Alex smiled back and nodded slightly. "I finished them before I got here. But if you wanted to take a look at them, with your expertise, I would be grateful."
...He didn't want to move, though, so he just sat there smiling bashfully at Hitoshi, waiting to see what he would do.
