Stephen noticed Dubhiarr's attempt to keep her voice calm despite her obvious pent-up bitterness. He kept his voice soft and casual as he answered, "Well, I was going to ask how you're doing, but I think I get the current picture already. So I think I'll settle for asking whether you know who's going to be subbing for the Creepster."

Dubhiarr shrugged the shoulder Stephen's hand wasn't resting on; it felt strangely comfortable. "Probably Professor Hawk; he seems to sub everyone's classes whenever he's needed. Did you know his daughter is a freshman now?"

"I think I've seen her around," Stephen nodded. "She doesn't look much like Professor Hawk at all. Probably takes after her mother a lot."
He paused for a few beats before glancing casually down at Dubhiarr's throat and remarking, "That's a nice necklace. Where did you get it?"

"Couldn't tell you exactly," Dubhiarr replied, fingering the pendant absently. "I got it for Christmas last year, but there was no other name on the tag besides mine. It was the weirdest thing."

"Mmm... sounds like it," Stephen murmured. He took the chain gently between his thumb and forefinger. "It certainly suits you. Purple is definitely your color."

Dubhiarr nodded. "I wish I knew who gave me this so I could thank him properly..."

"What makes you think it's a guy?" Stephen wondered. "It's not exactly a secret that you swing both ways, you know." He grinned cheekily.

Dubhiarr laughed. "Yeah, I know. But whoever it was also sent me a scarf and a bouquet of roses, on my birthday and Valentine's Day. The flowers came with a note, and the handwriting was definitely a guy's." She smiled, her eyes drifting over to the vase on her dresser. "'You will be in my heart until the purple rose dies.'"
Her gaze became critical as it wandered over to the blanket tent. "What are they doing in there? No, nevermind, I don't want to know."

((cont'd from "Sheer Terror"))
Dubhiarr shut the door behind her with a soft click, glancing around the room. The blanket tent was still in place; she poked her head inside, blinking in the dimness and calling out softly. "Nina?"

Nina entered a minute later, her bookbag slung over one shoulder and Remus' present held to her chest. The silky fabric of the kimono slid over her arm as she dropped the bag to the floor and crossed the room to the chest of drawers, into which she folded the gift neatly.
"Having fun in there, Du?" she asked, grinning to see her friend's lower half protruding from the still-constructed fort.

Dubhiarr smiled at the sound of Nina's voice, exiting the tent backwards and straightening up. She turned and grinned at her tiny roommate. "I thought you might have gotten lost in there; I was about to go and get Aye to use as a flashlight." Her expression sobered considerably as she added, "There's something I should tell you about."

Nina giggled-- Aye would indeed make an excellent flashlight. Dubhiarr's sudden seriousness caught her off guard, however; she stammered a little as she responded. "Wh-what? What is it?"

"It's nothing too serious... well, it might be for you," Dubhiarr answered, seating herself at the front of the blanket tent and nodding for Nina to sit beside her. "Kemekin had a sort of seizure in the student lounge today. Ellie said it was something related to his magic. Don't worry, he's in the sick bay, alive and doing fine. But I should warn you... I was there with him when the seizure happened, and Kemekin sounded like his magic would have hurt me if I'd touched him while he was... in that state. Which brings me to my next point. I'm not saying this just because I don't like the way Kemekin treats you, so please don't think that's the only reason. I don't think you should get too close with him, physically or otherwise. There's a chance that whatever happened today might happen again when you're with him, and I don't want to see you get hurt for something that's out of his control."

Nina, who had been in the act of seating herself next to Dubhiarr, stood up again almost immediately. She bristled as soon as her roommate mentioned Kemekin, expecting a rant, but upon the realization of the context her eyes widened and she bit her lip. Kemekin had a seizure?!
Nina actually turned towards the door, intending to make a beeline for the Sick Bay, but Dubhiarr's voice held her in place.
"...something that's out of his control."
Nina, her expression softening, faced Dubhiarr and lowered to a crouch, her hands wrapped around her knees. "Hey Du," she said after a moment, "I know-- I mean, I appreciate that you're looking out for me. You're like my big sister." She stopped to take a breath, then continued, "Do you... know what happened that landed Kemekin here? I mean, besides just being a mage in general. Did he ever tell you what he did?"

Dubhiarr shrugged, putting her arm around Nina and holding her close. "I have no idea."
She shifted slightly at the mention of Nina's purely sororal feelings, but said nothing. Now maybe wasn't the right time for this after all...

"He had a friend," Nina began, shifting her weight so that she was sitting instead of crouching, "his powers manifested when they were arguing-- he accidentally gave his friend a heart attack. Put the poor boy in the hospital for weeks." Nina looked down at her knees. "Kemekin looked like he might cry when he told me about it. So I don't--" the blond glanced up at Dubhiarr and noticed the older girl's expression. "What's wrong?"

Shite, shite, shite. Dubhiarr chewed her lip for a few seconds, then took a deep breath and let it out again. It was now or never.
"It's... well... there's something I've had on my mind a lot lately, and I..." She struggled to finish, her ears beginning to burn. Finally she shook her head and forced the words from her mouth in one long stream.
"I can't believe I actually need to say this, but-- I like you. A lot. I know I've seemed to hardly pay any attention to you in the two years we knew each other before, but trust me, I know what I'm talking about. I love everything about you, from the way you speak to the way you fight. You're strong and smart and sweet and beautiful. I could go on for ages." She took another breath and held it, looking earnestly at Nina.

Nina froze, disbelief coloring her face. Her jaw went slightly slack, her lips parting just barely in an expression of acute surprise. What was she to say to that? Of course, she now thought of Dubhiarr as she thought of Seele: a close friend; an older sister. But romantically?
"I... erm..." Nina fought to find the words, but none came. Yes, Dubhiarr was beautiful. Yes, Dubhiarr was important to her. Nina loved Dubhiarr, but it was a platonic love; Nina simply couldn't find the thought of her and Dubhiarr being anything more than sisters realistic.
"Du...I can't..." Again, Nina failed to express this to her friend. She took a breath, tried again; the result was the same.

"...You can't." Dubhiarr heard the words leave her mouth, only half-believing that she was speaking them. Her face fell in disbelief, her eyes burned. She shut them for a moment, then looked up again.
"Of course," she went on haltingly, a sound wavering in her throat that was half-laugh, half-sob. "Oh, of course you don't like me back. I should have guessed. You barely noticed me in your freshman and sophomore years, and you barely even notice me nowadays, what with K-Kemekin clinging to you all the time..." She choked on the boy's name.
"Kemekin!" she repeated, spitting the word out. "What do you see in him? He's smart-mouthed, he's impetuous, he doesn't know when to keep his hands to himself--"

Nina felt her jaw tighten. This was unfair. She had barely seen Dubhiarr in the last two years, let alone been able to hold an extensive conversation with her...
The way she said Kemekin's name made her temper flare. The boy was not going to get dragged into this.
"...He's smart-mouthed, he's impetuous, he doesn't know when to keep his hands to himself--"
Nina's mouth twitched angrily at those last words; she brought her palm across Dubhiarr's cheek in a reactive slap, the sharp sound of the impact punctuating the thunderous silence that followed.

Dubhiarr gasped in shock and pain as Nina's palm connected violently with her cheek. She reeled backward, her eyes wide in horror, and touched her stinging cheek as tears streamed down her face. She stared at her roommate for a few shocked seconds, then turned and bolted from the room, not caring where she ended up. She needed air, she needed comfort, she needed away.

Nina watched her go, feeling the ebb of the intense heat that had risen to her face moments before. She should feel horrible for slapping Du-- indeed, she knew that she would as soon as her temper faded. Now, however, she was far too angry to do anything about it. A part of her wanted to follow Dubhiarr, to explain herself, but that part was overpowered by the hissing serpent in her chest.
Standing, Nina turned and began to tear down the blanket fort. _______________________________________________________________________________

Dubhiarr set her bookbag down on the floor at the end of her bed and kicked off her shoes beside the bag. She glanced around the room, smiling and beginning to gather up every pillow and blanket in the vicinity. She clambered on, around and off of her and Nina's beds, placing pillows and draping blankets wherever they would stay up. Soon the resurrected "happy tent" was complete.
Dubhiarr crawled into the tent and curled up inside it, watching the door patiently as she waited for Nina.

Nina shuffled into the room some time later, her bookbag dragging behind her along the carpet. She left it to stay in the corner by the door and staggered to her own bed, upon which she flung herself face-first. She turned her head to the side, mostly for need of air, and watched the newest reincarnation of the happy tent for a full minute before saying aloud, "Duuuuuu, the blanket-fort's come back to haunt me! It's mad that I tore it down and now it wants to bring a vicious end to my life whilst I sleep."
She rolled off the bed and crawled into the tent. If she was surprised to find Dubhiarr already inside, she didn't show it. Instead snuggled up to her roommate and lay her head upon the taller girl's stomach, curling into a ball. "Kung fu just before a full day of school should be a sin," she muttered. "I almost punched my math teacher in the face because he wouldn't stop babbling about the double-half identities of cosine this and that."

Dubhiarr giggled, uncurling carefully and stretching her legs out as she wrapped her arms around Nina. "Awww, poor Peach. Should we delay this talk for awhile, then, if you're not feeling quite up to it? I kind of need you to be alert..."
