Jason adjusted his grip on the wrapped package under his arm as he raised his free hand to knock on Veronique's office door (oh, scheisse, he still had paint on his hands, and probably elsewhere too), then stood back to wait for an answer.
He held the package carefully in both hands, watching the door. He hoped the Headmaster would appreciate his gift, especially considering the time, patience and care that had gone into it.

Veronique's fingers froze over the keyboard, her left brow twitching slighting in irritation. Who would dare to interrupt her during her very important work? At the rate people had been intruding on her, she would be stuck on one chapter for the rest of the year.
For the sake of whoever was on the other side of that door, it had better be a life or death situation. Or her afternoon latte. Veronique rose quietly from her desk, the very shadows of the room seeming to ripple around her in obedience.
"Yes," she seethed, slinging the door open, "what do you--"
Veronique blinked, two things coming to her attention. First of all, that the boy at her door was holding a very large package (A gift! Veronique's mind screamed), and second, that the boy was wearing a skirt, and was quite possibly the most adorable thing Veronique had seen since Tebryn disappeared off to...wherever he was hiding. She made a mental note to go looking for him later.
Her anger quickly deflated. "Is...that for me?" she asked archly.

Jason nodded, taking a small step toward her. He had shrunk away from her a little at seeing the anger in her face -- he hoped he hadn't interrupted something vitally important -- but when she calmed down, he relaxed.
"It is," he answered with a small smile, holding it out to her. "I know it's really late for Christmas, and I have no idea when your birthday is, so it might not be anywhere near that. But I hope you like it anyway. Be careful, it's rather fragile." It had taken him ages to find a frame he liked; he'd be devastated if it broke, especially right when Veronique was opening it.

Veronique pressed her lips in a thin line, taking the package from Jason. The headmaster could not say even she remembered the date of her birthday, and typically she celebrated it whenever she felt like it. Sometimes Veronique had three birthdays a year. But even so, it was very rare that anyone gave Veronique a gift. The last person the give her anything had been that blue-haired, far more tolerable brother of Notos, and that had been the tiny ice butterfly that fluttered at the edge of Veronique's desk. This...
Veronique delicately pulled away the layers of wrapping paper, tossing it carelessly to the floor. The frame was the first thing to come into view, smooth wood that Veronique recognized immediately as purpleheart. It had been polished to a shine.
The picture itself was breathtakingly beautiful. Jason had obviously used one of her old staff photos as the reference, though he had taken a few creative liberties with the clothing. The dress was strapless and liked almost like gossamer, and the folds in the skirt were painted like a butterfly's wings in dark violet. The background was an elaborate garden, clearly not something he saw at Dunehelden. Rose bushes framed Veronique's form.
"This is...very nice," Veronique said at last.

Jason, who had been standing nervously rigid and holding his breath while Veronique opened the gift, relaxed again at her reaction, his smile widening slightly. His hard work and dedication seemed to have paid off. He had hardly expected her to squeal and hug him in gratitude -- the very idea was ridiculous, and he fought back a laugh at the thought -- and though he wasn't quite sure if the Headmaster was smiling or not, her reaction was definitely positive.
"I'm very glad you like it," he replied. "It took me a long time to finish, though thankfully not quite as long to find a frame that matched it. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, myself. I just hope you have somewhere to put it." He stood still, watching her, half-expecting to be dismissed in a moment, since he really had no other reason for being there and she couldn't stand there all day holding the painting.

Veronique held up the painting, studying it appreciatively. She knew exactly where to put it. She withdrew back into her office, and climbed onto her desk, affixing the painting behind her chair. Now anyone even when Veronique was out of her office, she would be there to stare imperiously at them. She wondered if she could have someone charm it to make the eyes move to give it more effect...
Veronique hopped down off of her desk, looking at Jason. She tapped her lips in thought. "A gift this nice should be rewarded, I think. Now what should it be.... Let me think." Veronique's eyes lit up suddenly. "Ah, I believe I have an idea. This weekend, I am taking you and Tebryn to Paris for shopping. My wardrobe is getting a bit old anyway, and I can never shop alone."

Jason watched happily as Veronique hung up the painting behind her desk and came back to him; he looked at her in surprise and delight as she stated her intended reward for his gift. Shopping in Paris!
"That sounds wonderful, Headmaster," he told her, unable and unwilling to keep from grinning at the thought. "I've never been outside of Germany except to come here. It'll be an adventure. Thank you very much!"

Veronique smiled--a somewhat unnerving facial expression on the headmistress. "Very well. This Saturday, be at my office at precisely eight in the morning. I will be taking you and Tebryn for a day in Paris." Her eyes narrowed slightly, and she put one hand on her hip. "And Himmel, if that lazy whelp will actually wake up in time. I hate carrying my own bags. And maybe Smoke since traveling might be easier with a mage...." She hmmed to herself.
"At any rate, we will be shopping in the finest shops in Paris, and eating lunch in one of the finest cafés in the city, so wear your finest clothes. Do try to be on time?" She looked back at the painting appreciatively. The school really could do with more art of her, couldn't it?
"You may be excused, if you have nothing more to ask."

"No, ma'am. Thank you again, ma'am." Jason grinned in excitement, bobbing the Headmaster a little curtsey. "I'll see you on Saturday then, if not sooner. Have a good day, Headmaster."
He turned and headed back up the hallway, a distinct spring in his step. Saturday couldn't come quickly enough.
