((This probably takes place some year or other before the first DH2 school year.))
Alex hadn't spoken to Rhys in a while- not since he had mentioned his brother Reed's child was going to Dunehelden- and the time before that was long enough ago that he hadn't been expecting to hear from either of them until Christmas cards went out. He certainly hadn't been expecting that if Rhys did want to contact him, he would send a letter rather than simply calling.
It was surprisingly short, given it began with a number of gentle inquiries about Alex, Hitoshi, Alyn, and Alex's parents and siblings, wound into a nice vague summary of the last six months of Rhys' life, and ended in a request for Alex to come see them at Blaise's chateau outside of Paris over the summer, with or without Hitoshi, and for an extended stay if he so desired. It looked in all respects to be the letter of a man who simply wanted to keep in touch with family he didn't see often.
Except, to Alex's skillful eye, for two things: one, he very specifically mentioned Hitoshi more than once, but not Hitoshi's family, which was odd given Rhys usually seemed to think of them as an inseperable block; and two, there was no mention whatsoever of Blaise's mother, who Alex had been under the impression was the actual current owner of Blaise's chateau.
In short, while Rhys was certainly lonely- Rhys was always lonely without a horde of friends around, a trait Alex certainly couldn't fault- this probably was to be interpreted as "your brother-in-law hauled my mother-in-law off to some fashion thing in a spectacularly annoying manner and I would really appreciate it if you kept my boyfriend company so he didn't consider reviving the practice of hunting peasants for sport".
He spoke to Hitoshi in very general terms, pleading the beautiful French countryside, and eventually he acquiesed.
