The student lounge was very different from how Merkyutio remembered it-- though that might have just been because one of the walls would be rebuilt in three years after a friendly wrestling match between Gussumaru Kenji and Baratoge Kazari. The construction would expand the room and allow for a rearrangement of wiring and furnishings.
Merkyutio walked into the room as he took off his jacket, tying it around his waist as he went. He took a seat in one of the overstuffed armchairs, closest to a window, and flicked his hair out of his eyes to watch the goings-on in the courtyard.

Hitoshi liked to come to the student lounge during his free period and lay on the sofa, just staring up at the ceiling and drinking in the perfect silence. It was usually empty at this time of day, which meant Hitoshi had the plush couch and soft pillows all to himself. No television. No family. No classmates. And, most importantly, no Blaise Park, which was the lounge's main advantage over the class before the free period.
Hitoshi hadn't expect another person to join him in the student lounge, and when the shadow flickered over the couch, Hitoshi instinctively reached for his glasses to get a better look at the intruder.
He sat up in place and fixed his glasses on his nose, hair sticking up at odd angles from the friction of the layers of soft pillows, and frowned slightly. He didn't recognize the newcomer, who was clearly too old to be anywhere near his own age, but not any professor he had ever seen before. He supposed that this person could be a university student...
He sat on the sofa, watching the stranger.

Merkyutio didn't immediately notice the kid watching him-- he had been in the process of rolling up his sleeves when he caught the lad's eye.
"Hello," he offered, one eyebrow arched. Holy shit, this was a young Headmaster Gilespi. Merkyutio felt a grin tugging at the corners of his lips. His half-brother looked startlingly like Valdemar. Or rather... Valdemar looked startlingly like Hitoshi. He had always heard the professors say it, but he hadn't believed them. Now, though...

He looked familiar in a way that Hitoshi couldn't quite place, and he was unsure whether he should be worried by that or not.
"I don't believe I've met you before," Hitoshi said bluntly, reaching one hand to smooth down the unruly strands of hair in the back.

The arch in Kyu's eyebrow became more pronounced, as did his grin. "You haven't." Yeah, this was Hitoshi, all right. "I'm out to become a professor here. Maybe."

They seemed to be taking in new professors left and right lately. Hitoshi hoped that was a sign that Dunehelden's influence was expanding, rather than an indication of all the professors they had lost. The lost staff members already number two this year, and the semester was not over--Professor Conall, who admittedly no one lamented the loss of, and his uncle, Professor Volkova...
"Which subject?" he asked, a bit more interested at the prospect of a potential professor. A part of him expected him to say 'History'; Hitoshi had seen no indication that Professor Mervielle-Dion intended to quit, but they had never kept a history teacher for more than a single school year. He would hardly put it past the headmistress to preemptively interview for the position.

Merkyutio stretched his arms out in front of him, lacing his fingers together as he went and making the joints pop lightly. His mother had always harped at him not to do that, but habits were habits.
"Magic theory," he answered. "Do you think enough students would be interested in taking my classes, if I got the job?"

Hitoshi's eyes lit up slighty at the idea of magic theory. Learning the practice of magic was wonderful, of course, but the theory... That was something Hitoshi could really sink his teeth into. Magic was something that, on a fundamental level, he understood, more than he understood most anything else.
He'd picked up what he could about magic theory from his uncle, but his uncle had always been busy. He seldom had the time for other people, even when those people happened to be family. Hitoshi suspected that was what brought about the divorce, though his aunt never explicitly stated the cause. She had a habit of keeping everything bottled up--a family trait, Hitoshi supposed.
"Magic Theory 101 is required for all mages," he replied, "though after Professor Volkova left the school, most of them have been taught by other teachers. We haven't had a proper Magic Theory class since last year, and Professor Volkova preferred to teach at the university level." He shrugged slightly.
"I know of several students that would like to take the classes, and since it's only a theory class, interested non-mage students could sign up for the class, as well. That gives it a much broader scope than most other magic-related classes, and I know there are probably mortals, and even shapeshifters and vampires, who would be interested in learning the theory behind it."

Merkyutio listened, nodded, and grinned. "Glorious."
He watched Hitoshi for a moment for two before breaking into a new grin. He leaned forward a bit, and extended his hand for a shake. "My name is Merkyutio." What was the name he had put on his resumé, again? "Merkyutio Omagede."

Hitoshi nodded and shook the potential-professor's hand. "Hitoshi Gilespi," he announced. "Academy sophomore."
Hitoshi couldn't quite shake the feeling that he had seen the professor somewhere before, though he was unsure why.
