Aritha had gotten permission from Professor Dion with ease, and found the location of her camp easily. As she thought, it had only just been opened that night. Glancing up at the moon, she grinned and looked back at Rudeth. “So… It shouldn’t be that hard to find my Papa. Do you want to look around first, or just go straight there?”
There were people moving around everywhere, both Roma and the fair-goers. Bright silks mixed with ridiculous tourist shirts and more sober business-casual attire; bare feet, soft slippers danced with heavy boots and ordinary tennis shoes. Aritha’s own slippers joined the dance easily. A dancer knew better than to let their feet get stepped on; it was her livelihood, normally.
There was bright colors and bright lights everywhere. Aritha could smell a number of foods, those common to American carnivals, and a number that were rather specifically Greek. The voices of her friends calling for crowds reminded her of years gone by when she was dancing, and she sighed slightly.
It took only a moment for her to brush it off though, and look at Rudeth for his answer.

Rudeth stared wide-eyed at the camp around him, taking in the sights. It had been a long time since he'd been to any sort of fair, but this...hadn't been precisely what he was expecting. Granted, he wasn't sure what he was expecting at all, except that he kind of hoped there was funnel cake or baklava or both, any maybe some sort of fried meat on a stick.
"Food," he replied immediately. "I want to get something to eat, then we can go meet your dad." He grinned.

Aritha giggled and nodded. "Did you want something you'd find in America or something more regional?"
She wanted something sweet, since she knew the meat wouldn't be as good as what she made. It wouldn't be bad, and certainly wouldn't make Rudeth sick... Then she paused. She could always get him something and then make it better later. She almost liked that idea more. But it still depended on his answer. If he wanted funnel cakes, she couldn't do that. Aritha didn't handle that much hot oil very well.

The smell of fried sugar was thick in the air, and Rudeth hadn't had anything to eat yet today. He was in no mood to be picky.
"What do you feel like? I kind of feel like I could eat two of everything and still have room left over." Rudeth grinned. "I wouldn't mind some baklava. I haven't had any in ages. Wouldn't mind meat either, though, if you have any idea what's good. I'd like to try the regional stuff."

Aritha shrugged, "I'm a vampire, Rudeth. I like sweets because I like sweets, not because I have any need to eat."
She smiled and nodded though. "Alright. This way. You have to look deeper to find the better food. Not that what's here isn't good, but the deeper into the carnival, the better everything is. It's to draw people in."
Weaving through the crowd, with a good hand on Rudeth's so he didn't get lost in the crowd, Aritha led him to a stand with roasted meats of various kinds. Aritha looked at Rudeth closely, then smiled and handed him a plate. She took a small piece for herself, promising the vendor that before she left she'd help him with some mending for payment.

Rudeth ducked through the crowd, following close behind Aritha. Sure enough, the warm smell of delicious things got stronger the further in they went--meats and spiced potatoes and things in pitas and plenty of pastries that Rudeth didn't even know what they were.
He grinned and took the plate from Aritha. "Thanks. This smells amazing." He nodded to the vendor and thanked him, though he wasn't sure if the vendor spoke English or not. He did his best to eat everything on the plate in a few minutes, partly because he was starving and partly just because he wanted to hurry up with the eating so he could get on to meeting Aritha's family.

Aritha finished her piece and licked her fingers clean, complimenting the vendor and watching Rudeth with a grin. "Don't burn your mouth," she giggled.
The man nodded, waving at him.

"Ouch--hot!" Rudeth yelped, dropping the pita back onto the plate. "Ouch--yeah, I think I figured that out." Rudeth smiled sheepishly. "D'you, uh, think we could find some water somewhere or something?"
Rudeth felt through the items on the plate and ate the ones that seemed more lukewarm. He'd wait for the others to cool, or at least get some water before he tried it again.

Aritha giggled and looked around. Smiling, she skipped a bit away, then offered him a glass of milk. "It's goat milk. The water tastes funny here. That's from them, not me," she said, pointing at a passing Roma. "Obviously, I don't drink it."
She grinned at him.

Rudeth finished the food a bit more slowly, then downed the milk. It tasted a little strange, but it wasn't bad, he decided.
"Alright, done." He smiled. "Now, let's go meet your dad."

Aritha smiled at him and took the plate back, tucking it in the basket on the counter for that purpose. She took his hand and led him toward a wagon, then paused. "Rudeth, I'm not sure I've told you about this, but... Papa badly hurt his legs when I was about eight. They're healing slowly, but he's still unable to walk. He was caught by the wagon wheels and it... well, if he were human he would never walk again."
She licked her lips slightly. "I just... don't want you to be surprised."

He smiled and squeezed her hand. "I understand." He gave her a little peck on the cheek. "And I'll be on my best behavior, promise. I want to make a good impression."

Aritha nodded, smiling at him. "I just didn't want you to be confused... I know it's a little odd..."
She shrugged and held his hand a bit tighter, then knocked on the door. "Papa! Guess what!" she calls.
A voice from inside made a noise of surprise, then there was the sound of rolling across a wood floor and the door opened. "Bianca! How did you get here?"
Aritha smiled at her father, hopped up and kissed him on the cheek. "School field trip. I thought it was better than sitting around bored at school and then we just happened to be in the same city as you! I just had to come say hi. Zeph's around here somewhere... and this is someone I want you to meet."
She turned and beckoned Rudy to come up the stairs, pushing her father's wheelchair out of the way enough to allow him up. "Papa, this is Rudeth. I've mentioned him in my letters."
Her father nodded and offered Rudy a hand. "A pleasure to meet you, Rudeth. I've read nothing but good things about you. I'm Adhir."

Dubhiarr followed Aritha and Rudeth quickly through the crowds of people, her mouth watering at the smells of so many delicious foods. She sampled what was on her own plate as she walked, looking over at Zeph to make sure he was keeping up. Bits of Aritha and Rudeth's conversation drifted back to Dubhiarr's ears, mingled with the voices of other fair-goers and those running the various attractions and food stands.
"This is amazing," she told Zeph with a wide grin. "I'm definitely telling Nina and Steph about this once we get back to the hotel."

Zeph looked around, picking at his meat idly and eating without any real concern for normal table-manners. He was at a fair, what was the point? Licking his fingers clean, Zeph nodded. "I used to come every time it was near home. But then, I've been friends with Aritha forever."
He put his plate away and got a piece of what was basically hardened caramelized sugar mixed with food coloring, which became taffy in his mouth. He offered a piece to Du. "It's a pity Nina couldn't come. She'd have loved it here. We'll just have to find plenty of souvenirs for her. I've got to find something for Jason, too."
He watched Aritha drag Rudeth off and grinned. "I've got an idea, actually. But I'll wait until tomorrow, I think. Aritha's father is going to be busy with his daughter."

"Ooh, thanks." Dubhiarr accepted the taffy and popped it into her mouth, chewing it for a bit before she spoke again. "I'm definitely going to get Nina lots of souvenirs, and Stephen too." She followed Zeph's gaze, watching Aritha and Rudy and smiling quietly.
"What's your idea for Jason?" she wondered curiously.

"Aritha's father makes music boxes, and intricate toys. I was thinking maybe I could get him one of those," Zeph said, looking around. "So... what do you want to look at? They've got most of the games and things you'd get in America, and shows. No rides, though. They're too hard to transport as far as this caravan goes."

"Yeah, that's understandable," Dubhiarr nodded. She looked all around them, wondering what she wanted to see most. Souvenir-shopping could wait a little bit, she decided. "What sorts of shows do they have here?"

"Well, there's dancing... probably not interesting for you; your average magic show. Even for real mages, slight of hand is fun to watch. There's fortune tellers... some actually have some divination talent. I had one tell me to watch my temper, and it was a few days later than Euros and I had the fight that tore up our house and got me sent to Dunehelden."
Zeph grinned at her. "So... it depends on what kind of show you want. There's a few contortionists too, but with Nina as a roommate..." He shrugged.

"I love dancing, both doing and watching it," Dubhiarr informed him. "Seeing a fortune teller would be cool, and maybe potentially useful. I might end up learning something about myself." She mirrored his grin. "You're right, though; contortionists are something I see every day, thanks to Nina being who and what she is."

Zeph snickered. "Well... I guess I could find one of the more girl- and/or child-friendly shows. Aritha's wasn't one that was too bad, but it's a bad idea to go with too many men. She's not inappropriate, but... well."
He chuckled again. "And that's not just because she's my ex. So... Oh! I think there's a few animal trainers too. A tiger for almost certain, and a fair number of other animals. There's no shifters here of any sort that I'm aware of, though." he added thoughtfully.

Dubhiarr blinked in response to Zeph's statements about Aritha's dancing. She hadn't known he and Aritha had been in a relationship. "Uh-huh." Wow, awkward.
She pursed her lips a bit at his other suggestion. "Don't a lot of trainers hurt their animals to teach them things? I don't think I'd like it if that was the case."

Zeph shook his head. "Only really BAD trainers. Good trainers use treats. Besides, Aritha and her father wouldn't allow it, and while they aren't in the leadership, you don't piss off vampires living with you."
Zephyros looked around thoughtfully, trying to think of something else. "So... one of the fortunetellers with talent... or one of the milder dancing routines..." he mumbled to himself.

Dubhiarr couldn't help but grin at Zeph's remark about Aritha and her father. "Yeah, I can see that being a bad idea. I would not want to be nearby if that happened."

Zeph nodded, "Since at night no one can match Aritha for strength... yeah. Anyway... you still haven't answered me. See, I've been coming here for years, and most of the people here know me by name. So... there's nothing new, and nothing I really want to see. Mostly because I've already been to most of the shows multiple times."
