Detentions with Professor Yogo weren't horrible-- never more than a few hours every Saturday morning, always over by noon. But still, Nina wished she could serve her time in the afternoons. Stretching, sparring, and meditating never cleared her head quite as well as they did early in the mornings. Few people woke up as early as she. By the time lunch rolled around everyone was awake, and it was that much more difficult to find a quiet spot on campus.
So, Nina had taken to skipping lunch and spending the free time in the student lounge, where she could be ignored, if not find herself completely alone. Which was why Nina sat herself now at one end of one of the plush couches, legs folded neatly beneath her, an open book in her lap. She twirled her fingers idly through her hair as she read, her focus on the pages, oblivious to anything else happening in the room.

The door to the student lounge was open-- Song peeked in, curious, furry ears twitching each time he heard the pages turning. The sound was a swirl, then a spike from a straight line. Song followed the sound with his eyes-- along the carpet, up the side of the couch, to find the bare feet of the sitting girl. His gaze followed the curve from her ankle, up her calf, along her side and down the length of her arm to watch her hand turn the next page. He wanted to see her face, but it was hidden by a curtain of pale hair.
Song slipped into the room and stood at the other end of the couch. His view was still blocked by that flaxen hair. So he stepped around to the girl's side. No luck.
Song moved to stand right in front of her. He bent slightly at the waist so that his eyes were level with the top of her bowed head, reached forward, and brushed her hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear.

Nina didn't even notice the boy as he moved about the room, getting closer to her with each shift. When she felt her hair move, however, she looked up, brow furrowed.
"Um, can I help you?" she asked, jerking away from his hand. Then she paused, and blinked. The boy had... ears. Furry ones. Nina wondered for a moment if the male was related to Aura, but no. Aura was hispanic-- this boy was obviously asian. And his ears weren't a raccoon's. They were canine.

Song braced his hands on his knees and leaned forward, flashing an impish grin. The girl's voice was quiet, raspy-- it was a pale, powdery blue with a moss-green tinge, with a rough yet crystalline texture that reminded him of frost.
Oh, and her eyes. They were like jewels. Song chuckled.
"I couldn't see your face," he explained, edging still forward so that he and the girl were nearly nose to nose. "But now I can. I like your freckles, smallish girl."

Nina gave an annoyed expression and ducked away from the boy, sliding sideways so that she was in the middle of the couch. "Freckles. Sure."
She flicked her hair out of her face and settled back into a seated position, reopening her book and hoping that the wolf-eared lad would take the hint and leave.

Song spun in place and sat down in the warm spot the girl had just vacated. He recognized her now-- yes, she was the one that palled around with the big monk guy. What did other people call her? A weird name-- it was a Korean word; a language in which he'd often heard his grandparents conversing during the times he'd visited them. What did it mean? He didn't know too many phrases in Korean other than greetings and how to order food. But she had another name, Song was sure. A normal one, at least. What was it? It started with an M. Or an N. Or an R?
"Yes," Song said, still grinning, as he pulled his knees up to his chest and hugged them after turning where he sat to face the girl. "Freckles. They're cute. So what's your name? I know you're the one who lives with the monk-guy, and you're dating the Healer's nephew, and you're friends with a classmate of mine." Struck by a sudden thought, Song's mouth formed into an oh! of realization. "Right! That's your name! I've heard Maleko mention you. It's Nina. Or Mina. But probably Nina. Right?" His grin returned, brighter this time. He leaned forward a bit and tilted his head toward her, turning it slightly to present his ears to her. "My name's Song. Pet my ears-- they're soft."

Nina sighed and closed her book again, listening to the boy speak. She arched an eyebrow and turned to look at him as he continued on, but was surprised to find him leaning towards her again, prompting her to pet his ears.
"Erm..." Nina lifted a tentative hand and ran her fingertips along the back of the ear closest to her. Song was right-- the fur was soft and downy. Nina felt a light smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she scritched gently at the base of the ear.
"Is this normally how you greet people?"

Song leaned into her touch and smiled at her. "Something like this," he said. "Ah-- a little to the left. Kee~!" He was silent for a few moments, letting the girl pet him, and when she finished he pulled away.
"You're prettier when you smile, you know," he commented. "I mean, you're cute otherwise, but when you smile you're prettier. You should smile more."

Nina pursed her lips slightly. Smile more? She smirked. "I've been told that before. And the people you mentioned earlier have names, you know. Are you new, or something?"

Song flapped his hand in the air. "Haneul's the monk-guy and Kemekin's the Healer's nephew. I know. There's a girl in my math class that has the kid's name scrawled all over her notebook." He sighed. "I'm horrible with names. It's my sophomore year and I'm still learning the names of the Professors. I couldn't tell you what to call the History professor if I tried."
