Mortals
(a.k.a., The not-just-lunch that seems to get in the way a lot)
There is a common misconception among the vampires, werewolves, and mages at this academy that there is no purpose in having mortals here. This is not so. There are several reasons why a mortal might be given the opportunity to join - only a few are even privy to information about it, after all - so here we have compiled information regarding mortals, and what they mean to you and I.
Mortals here at Dunehelden can be separated into several different groups:
1. Either someone thinks you're a future werewolf/mage or one of your parents works here.
This is one of the most common reasons. A good deal of our mortal students have family members who either either werewolves or are on our staff as mages or werewolves, or even mortals. There are also a handful of mortals who have been watched closely and have been deemed to have strong magical potential, so in hopes of pushing them closer to joining the ranks of their peers, they have been accepted into the academy.
2. Though you're not a mage, you have some sort of ability that is quite exceptional that we can harness.
The majority of our mortal students are here because they can be trained as Hunters. Hunters, unlike what many may believe, are not necessarily out for the downfall of all vampries/mages/werewolves. The majority of them simply want to keep the balance by eliminating the...bad ones. The true meaning of a Hunter is simply a mortal that is specially trained to be able to fight on equal footing with their supernatural counterparts.
These can be further broken down into categories...
Myrmidons
They make use of swords in order to fight against the supernatural, specializing in determining the physical strengths and weakness of their enemy. They're deft on their feet and quick with their hands, and in their training here, they learn maneuvers than will help them best even the strongest opponents.
Rangers
This is a very general term and can refer to those who use weapons that fire from a distance, be it bows or guns. For a long time bows were the preferred weapon, but gradually guns have become more common. Bow are just as effective as a whole as guns, but guns have the advantage of being far quicker in firing and far lighter and easier to use. However, bows are cheaper to maintain, quieter, and more accurate.
Trackers
The name is a bit misleading - "trackers" doesn't really refer as much to physically tracking the supernatural as it used to. Now it has broaden to include tracking through technological means, researching, and strategy. Modern trackers are often nicknamed "hackers" because so much of their work boils down to computers. They tend to work behind the scenes, as opposed to myrmidons or rangers that stay near the front lines, but their work is just as important and often just as dangerous.
Diplomats
The diplomats are just what their name suggests. They are taught to be charismatic, the faces of the Hunters. Their presence alone tends to be inspiring. They typically act as a go-between, negotiating between the Hunters and the Hunted, but also are often used as spies for the Hunters. Their emphasis is on socializing and manipulation.
