Hitoshi swept through the hallways with only one goal in mind: find his uncle, and make the man tell him the truth. Because lately, it seemed like all of the adults in his life knew way the hell more about his life than he did. He was tired of people keeping things from him, particularly things he had a right to know.
Hitoshi stopped in front of his uncle's room and banged as loud as he could on the wooden door. If the man wasn't here, he'd just have to comb the entire city until he managed to locate him. Some chaperone.

Unfortunately for Hitoshi, it was Rudeth, not Tristan that opened the door.
He opened it just a crack at first, peering out of it. Then, seeing that it was his cousin, he wrestled with the chain lock for several minutes before realizing that he needed to close the door first.
After a long and extensive battle of wits (which the door seemed to be winning), Rudeth finally managed to swing the door open fully.
"Hi!" Rudeth grinned at his cousin and tried very hard to pretend that he hadn't just been outsmarted by an inanimate object. "So, um, what's up?"

Hitoshi gritted his teeth impatiently as Rudeth fought with the door. He was in no mood to deal with his cousin's antics.
"I need to talk to Tristan. Where is he?"

Tristan looked up from where he sat on the edge of his bed, halfway through putting on his boots. He looked much worse for wear, like he hadn't shaved in days, and if he knew that wearing a cowboy hat around downtown Athens would pinpoint him as an American tourist, he didn't seem to care.
"Right here, Toshi," he called. "Something the matter?"

Hitoshi pushed his way past Rudeth, barely registering his cousin's presence.
"Who--is--my father?" Hitoshi stared down at his uncle. "Tell me the truth."

Rudeth looked at his cousin, looked at his uncle, and very quickly decided he wanted to be anywhere else but here. An angry Hitoshi was bad enough. Between the two of them, they'd probably destroy half of the hotel, and Rudeth didn't want to be around when that happened. This time, when things exploded, he wasn't getting blamed, damn it.
"I just remembered! I think I left something on fire downstairs! I'll...be back in a few hours." Rudeth turned and got the hell out of the room, closing the door behind him.

Tristan tugged on the other boot. This wasn't a conversation he was interested in having.
"No 'Hi, how've you been, Tristan'? Doesn't seem like I've seen you in months, outside of class." Tristan kept his tone light as he laced up his boot. "You an' Alex still fighting?"

"Don't change the subject," Hitoshi snapped. He crossed his arms over his chest.

"Some god damn exchange student your mother met at college. Nobody important." Tristan raised an eyebrow, peering up at his nephew. "You're awfully keen to know this all of a sudden. What brought this on?"

"This exchange student wouldn't happen to be anyone I know, would it?" Hitoshi noticed the way his uncle flinched, and took that as a sign he was on the right track.
"Because I just spoke with Professor Yogo about this very thing." Hitoshi glared. "You've been lying to me."

Tristan frowned and pushed himself to his feet. Tristan might not have been a particularly tall man, but with the boots, he had a good three inches on his nephew at the moment.
"And just what the hell did Professor Yogo say to you?" He narrowed his eyes. "I don't want you talking to him. And you and Rudeth can switch rooms until the end of the trip."

"Nothing that you shouldn't have told me ages ago," he snapped. "And no, I'm not rooming with you, either."
Hitoshi leaned against the wall, and his anger seemed to melt away until there was nothing left but pain. He couldn't meet his uncle's eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me? He was here. You knew he was here." Hitoshi crossed his arms tightly over his chest; it almost felt cold in the room. "He's been here for a year. I've been in his classes. Did you think it wouldn't come up at some point?" He shook his head. "God, Tristan, if you've been keeping something like this from me, how can I trust you about anything?"

Tristan flinched. He hadn't lied, at least not outright, but he knew he hadn't been completely honest with Hitoshi and Hitomi.
His shoulders went limp, and he rubbed the bridge of his nose. "No, you're right," he muttered. "I was keeping it from you because I thought I was doing what was best, but...if it was me, I'd want to know the truth, too. But I didn't know how to tell you. And I guess I was kinda hoping that if I just pretended none of this was happening, that it would all just disappear. Guess that was a pretty stupid assumption."
Tristan sighed and dropped back down on the bed, then patted the spot beside him. "Sit down. I think the two of us need to have a little talk about this." He glanced back up at Hitoshi. "Now, what all did that bastard tell you?"

Hitoshi sat on the edge of the bed beside his uncle, his shoulders tense. He dropped his hands in his lap.
"Nothing, really. He made several attempts to apologize, but that was all." Hitoshi looked up at his uncle. "Whenever Hitomi or I asked Mom, she said she'd tell us when we were older. Whenever we asked you, you pretended not to know. Rivienne always looked uncomfortable and changed the subject. I'm sick of being kept in the dark. I just want to know what the hell is going on."

Tristan sighed deeply, leaning against his elbows against his knees. "I don't know everything that happened, but I can tell you what I know. I guess it's about time you knew the truth. Just try not to hold it against me for keeping it from you."

Hitoshi was quiet for a moment, tense. He considered that for a moment.
"Alright," he murmured.
