The spring breakers may have returned from Greece the night before, but Ellie was up bright and early. She wasn't sure what had roused her from sleep, but after failed attempts to settle back into her dreams she had little choice but to get dressed and drift down to the kitchens.
It was a bit too early for her to be particularly hungry... But she wanted to busy her hands somehow. Maybe she was feeling restless. For what reasons, she was unsure, but a stint in the kitchen would, she hoped, soothe her.
The recipe for Sizzledods, as her father called them, was a simple one. They were essentially snickerdoodles with a pepper-induced kick. Ground-up habenero seeds mixed in with the cinnamon and sugar provided that sudden burst of heat which, by nature of the cookie, was almost immediately washed away by the other flavors.
As she gathered the ingredients, she felt a slow smile curl across her features. The last time she had made these, she had given one to Kemekin. The cat-tongued boy had described the flavor as a kick in the mouth. He then proceeded to rant about how pain was not a flavor.
Ellie bit back a giggle and rolled up her sleeves, turning to one of the sinks to wash her hands.

As usually, Hitoshi was up bright and early -- long before Alex. And with the events from the field trip still fresh in his mind, Hitoshi needed some time to clear his head, and thus, he did was he always did when he needed time to himself. He made his way to the kitchen.
The kitchen was almost always empty, especially this early. Few members of the student body bothered to cook their own food with Rhythan around, and even fewer would bother waking so early on a Sunday morning, so it came as a surprise when Hitoshi opened the door and realized that the kitchen was already occupied.
He stopped in the doorway, hesitating for a minute. He looked over at the healer. "Good morning, Dr. Evans-Barros."

Ellie glanced towards the door, smiling through her curls at Hitoshi.
"Morning," she chirruped before adding, her tone bright, "And Miss E or Ellie will do, you know."
She grabbed a paper towel and dried off her hands, nodding towards the ingredients spread upon the tabletop.
"I'm making cookies. Would you like to help?" She grinned.

Hitoshi hesitated for a moment. On the one hand, she was dating Professor Yogo, and after what happened over the field trip, it might be a bit awkward. But then...he could hardly hold that against her, and she'd been nothing but kind to him.
He crossed to the sink and began washing his hands. "What kind are you making?"

Ellie's grin turned into a smirk. The kind of smirk that Kemekin was known for.
"Sizzledods," she told him, chuckling. "They're a cookie my papi sort of invented. They're just like snickerdoodles, except..." She stepped forward and picked up a little glass bowl that held about a tablespoon of pepper seeds. "These buggers will be ground up and added to the mix. Habenero seeds."
She set the bowl down. "Do you like spicy foods?" She knew Hoshi did, and had to wonder whether it was a trait he had handed down to Hitoshi.

Hitoshi leaned over the bowl, the spicy scent burning his nose. He didn't typically use habeneros when cooking, but he liked spicy curry enough. He was a bit more skeptical about the flavor when mixed with cookies, but if Ellie thought they worked well... He could see the cinnamon complementing the spicy tingle of the seeds quite nicely, particularly if the portions were right. Yes, he could see it.
Hitoshi gave her a tiny smirk. "A bit, though I can't say whether or not I'd liked it in cookies."

Ellie beamed. "Well, you'll find out when these cookies are done, won't you?" She stooped by the oven and pulled out a cookie sheet, which she set empty into the oven and began preheating.
"The cookies won't stick if the tray starts out hot," she explained. "The bottoms firm up faster and don't have time to cook to the metal."
Then she went around the cabinets, pulling out mixing bowls, a whisk for the wet mix and a spoon for the dry mix. She held up the whisk in one hand and the spoon in the other. "Which half would you like? Wet or dry?"

Hitoshi glanced over at the pan. It wasn't very often that he actually learned new tricks, particularly from other people. Normally Hitoshi would have volunteered for the harder job, but it was clear the Ellie was far and away more experienced that him.
"I'll take the dry half," he replied, taking the spoon from her.

Ellie nodded and handed him the spoon, moving along the counter a bit so he could have space and access to his half of the ingredients.
Ellie combined the wet ingredients-- eggs, melted butter, a dollop of whipped cream, and (her personal secret) a portion of cream cheese-- into a metal mixing bowl and ran them together with the whisk, tipping the bowl as she went to create a neat little whirlpool that kept the different thicknesses from clumping until they were a smooth, uniform texture.
"How are your classes going?" she asked as she whisked, glancing over at him with a smile. She was able to work efficiently without looking at the bowl or whisk, it seemed, with the ease of practice.

Hitoshi carefully mixed the ingredients together, doing his best to follow Ellie's recipe. It quite a bit different than he was used to, which meant he was relying on the healer for instruction.
"They're going well," he replied. It was always a bit awkward when adults asked him about school, mostly because he was never quite sure what to say. Still, it was nice talking to Ellie. "I'm in Necromancy with Kemekin this semester."

Ellie added sugar to her mix, whisking along as she nodded.
She gave a bit of a humorous snort when he mentioned her nephew. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice colored with laughter. "I hope he isn't terrorizing the class."
Granted, Kemekin had told her that he quite enjoyed the class. Which was saying something, as aside from creative lessons, Kemekin disliked schoolwork on princicple.

"Mostly just Professor Korlianes. I don't think he likes Kemekin, though Kemekin hasn't done that much to warrant it in class." Hitoshi smirked. "I think that just makes it worse, though. I'm sure he thinks Kemekin's plotting something behind his back. He seems suspicious that Kemekin's doing so well in the class."
Hitoshi finished mixing up the dry ingredients and set the bowl on the table, waiting for further instruction.
