"It's just another day for me and I missed you the entire time!" he said, squirming a little at Jason's lips connecting with his head. He chuckled slightly, bumping his head gently against Jason's. "That tickles. Lemme set this down, it's heavy."
He grinned at Jason, wishing he didn't still have to look up. For a moment his eyes were caught by Jason's blue, then he shook his head and held the box up. "It's yours. And since it's after Christmas, I guess that means you better open it, huh?"

Jason nodded eagerly, backing into the room and setting the box carefully down on his bed. He moved back to the far wall and picked up a large, thin package wrapped in bright green and wrapped with a gold ribbon and bow; he grinned as he held it out to Zeph. "And this is yours. Merry Christmas."

Zephyros took it with a smile, "You open yours first. I want to see your reaction."
He looked almost giddy, grinning widely. He really wanted to see Jason's reaction... more to the gift inside a gift than what was inside the larger box. Setting his gift aside, he wrapped his arms around Jason's neck. "First you owe me a kiss though. I really really missed you..."

Jason moved willingly into Zeph's warm embrace, holding him close and kissing him tenderly on the mouth. "I missed you too... I wish you could have come and met my family. But there's always the summer for that. It'd be better, anyway... warmer. More opportunity to go out and sight-see."
He slipped away, picking up Zeph's gift and carefully unwrapping it, not wanting to rip the paper when it could easily be reused. He grinned at the sight of the painting supplies in the large box. "These are perfect! Just what I asked for. Thank you! And -- oooh...!" He spotted the smaller box, wrapped in the same light blue paper, and picked it up curiously. He opened it just as carefully as he had the larger box, grinning in curiosity at what might be inside.
He gasped in delight at the sight of a beautiful necklace nestled in black velvet: a heart-shaped white-gold locket set with a round opal, suspended on a fine chain of the same metal. It was a perfect complement to the ring on his hand. Jason held it up and watched it glitter, then clasped it around his neck, where it hung right over his heart.
"It's beautiful..." he said softly, his eyes shining as he looked back at Zeph. "Thank you so much!"

Zephyros beamed back at him, putting his hand slightly over the locket, "Huh. I guess I picked the perfect chain-length." He grinned widely, wrapping his arms around Jason again and just putting his head against Jason's chest.
"I'll open mine in a moment. I just want to be with you," he said softly, holding Jason close. "You're all the gift I need."

Jason held his boyfriend close, content just to be in his arms again after so long without him. "Mmm... take your time. I'm happy here," he smiled, resting his head against Zeph's. "I hope you didn't get too lonely while I was gone..."

"I had my brother, and Aritha, but that's not you..." he said softly, his attention oddly focused for the moment on Jason's heartbeat. Sighing softly, he just snuggled closer, holding Jason just that little bit tighter.
"It's a different kind of lonely. It's probably one I should get used to, considering how far apart we live... outside of school, anyway. It was weird sleeping alone though," he whispered, chuckling softly.

Jason laughed quietly, smiling as Zeph held him tighter. "I know the feeling. My family is wonderful, but having you there with me would have been even more wonderful."
He pulled away slightly, looking at Zeph with a grin. "So are you going to open your present or what? I could always wait and give it to you on Valentine's Day," he said teasingly.

Zeph blinked then grinned, "I was thinking we should just spend Valentine's Day together. So that means I should go open the gift. Which means letting you go... Hmmm..." His expression grew thoughtful.

Jason smiled and sighed in mockingly reluctant acceptance. "Oh, well, I suppose I could survive if you let go... for a while..." He grinned, kissing Zeph's forehead. "Go ahead and open it, silly. That's what gifts are for."

"But will I?" he teased, hugging Jason closer for a moment and then carefully opening the gift. He gasped, and then grinned at Jason, tackling him. "I love it! The only question is, where am I supposed to keep it?"
He glanced over his shoulder at the portrait of himself and Jason, just sitting on a couch. Zeph's head was on Jason's shoulder Kinda like mine is right now, the two of them just hugging each other. "Because there is definitely not room in my dorm."

Jason gasped softly and laughed as Zeph tackled him to the bed. "That's a really good question, actually..." His face grew thoughtful. "You might just have to leave it here until we can think of something. I'll make sure it doesn't get lost among all the others."

Zephyros snickered, " 'All the others', huh? What, the... three? portraits of me so far? This makes it... four, doesn't it? At least you're in this one too. That's what makes me more interested. If I wanted to look at myself I'd go find a mirror."
He looked in Jason's eyes, smiling a little. "Though I've got the view that really interests me right here." The smile turned into a mischievous grin. "Your eyes make really good mirrors," he laughed, then put his head back on Jason's chest.

Jason laughed. "I don't just paint you, you know, even though you are my favorite subject. I have plenty of other paintings sitting around, finished and unfinished. I've been meaning to do one of Professor Hawk and Professor Harrows for a while now. They're such a beautiful couple."
He raised his eyebrows and laughed at the mirror comment and Zeph's cheeky grin. "Really, now? So now I know what you're really thinking when you look into them?" He grinned and kissed Zeph's head, running a hand through his hair. "I know you're kidding. Silly Zeph." He snuggled closer, murmuring into Zeph's ear. "But you're my silly Zeph."

"I know you don't, I just find it funny that you have so many. What do you do with them, anyway? I mean, your dorm isn't any bigger than mine, except for the whole 'only one person' thing."
He smiled as Jason laughed, holding Jason closer. Hearing Jason say it that way, my Zeph. he thought with a warm feeling. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

"Yeah, not having a roommate gives me lots more space to keep stuff," Jason nodded, snuggling into Zeph's chest. He smiled at his boyfriend's next remark. "Mmm... good, because I wouldn't either."
He touched the locket Zeph had given him, which was warming with their combined body heat. "I'll have to find a picture of us to put in this... or paint one."

"Well, I'm sure we could find someone with a camera. Because I don't think a canvas would come small enough to fit," he grinned. He sighed slightly, then stifled a yawn. He snuggled closer, curling up a little.
"You're doing it again... making me sleepy all over again..." he murmured. "Didn't sleep well while you were gone. Missed you too much."

"I'm sorry," Jason murmured, stifling a yawn himself. "We'll have plenty of time to make up for that, though..." He kissed Zeph's cheek with a smile. "Starting now, if you like. Though I'll have to move the painting off my bed first... don't want it being shoved off when one of us tosses around."
He slipped quickly away, picking up the painting and leaning it carefully against the wall where it had been before, then returning to Zeph's side and snuggling back in against him. "There we go. Much better."

"Not your fault," he said softly, propping himself up on one elbow as Jason moved the painting. "One of us? You don't move in your sleep."
He wrapped his arms tightly around Jason as he came back, sighing softly in content. "Yes, much better..." he said softly.

Jason made a soft, contented noise in his throat, holding Zeph tightly against him and closing his eyes.
“Here's hoping this semester will be better than the last one...” he murmured as he drifted slowly off to sleep and into dreams.
The summer sun glittered on the clear blue water of a small seaside cove. Jason was frolicking in the water some distance from shore, with a small group of others -- five men (two barely past their teens, three much older) and two women. He recognized Liam Farrell, a fellow freshman, and someone who greatly resembled Professor Hawk (though taller, and without the scars on his face), as well as someone who looked exactly like the new biology professor (what was his name again?). There was another, very handsome young man of about twenty-two, with a tanned, muscular body, thick black curls almost down to his shoulders (they looked longer and straighter now that they were wet) and bright green eyes, who seemed perfectly at home in the water. The other man and the two women looked like something out of a Tolkien novel: tall, pale and pointy-eared. The man and one of the women had long straight golden hair; the other, younger woman had brown curls.
“Don't get too far out, Richard!” called the man who resembled Professor Hawk (even their voices were the same), as the green-eyed young man started to swim further out to sea. “I don’t want to have to rescue anyone today. I get enough of that already, heaven knows.”
Richard grinned and swam back toward shore, pushing his dripping hair out of his face. “Don’t be silly, V. Glorfy would never let me get out of my depth anyway,” he laughed in a soft Finnish accent.
The golden-haired woman laughed and splashed him as he swam near her. Jason grinned as he watched them. Suddenly the wind picked up, and the sky began to cloud over. The others all began to head shoreward, and Jason followed quickly, emerging from the water just as rain began to fall. As Richard moved ahead of him, Jason couldn’t help but notice the many scars criss-crossing Richard’s whole back.
They wrapped themselves in towels, heading inland through a thick forest, which sheltered them somewhat from the rain -- not that it mattered too much, as they were all soaked anyway.
The dreamscape suddenly changed -- now the forest was thick with snow, and Jason was alone except for one other person: a dark-haired, blue-eyed man he didn’t recognize. They were heading into the woods from another direction; Jason looked over his shoulder, seeing a house several yards beyond the edge of the woods, and two sets of footsteps leading out of it.
“You remind me of my ex-boyfriend,” the other man was saying in a lisping voice. “I hate that man. Just when I thought we had a chance at a life together, he left me; and not for just anyone. A woman.” The man’s voice oozed contempt. “Some Scottish girl.”
“That’s horrible,” Jason replied quietly, nervously. He could feel the hairs on the back of his neck prickling like mad.
The other man’s eyes were icy cold. He laughed bitterly, showing pointed teeth. Jason instinctively sped up his pace, breaking into a jog, then a run. He heard furious, inhuman snarling behind him, and risked a glance over his shoulder. A huge black wolf with icy blue eyes was in hot pursuit.
Jason ran faster, almost able to feel the wolf’s hot breath on his legs. Spying a tree with a low-hanging branch, he scrambled up onto it and climbed higher, clinging to the trunk in terror. The wolf leapt up and snapped at his feet, actually managing to scramble a short ways up the trunk and seize his ankle, dragging him down as blood spattered the snow…
The dream shifted again. Now Jason stood on the deck of a ship, in a long line of his fellow crewmen, parallel to a second line. All of the men were older than him: a tough, wild-looking lot, all muscle and scar and tattoo. A real band of pirates if ever Jason had seen one. Many of them were shaven bald; he could see scars etched into the bare skin of their heads and the backs of their necks, looking like some sort of tally marks. Most of the tallies counted up to the twenties and thirties. What did that mean?
He spotted one figure he recognized: Richard, the curly-haired boy who had been at the cove earlier in the dream. He looked strange now, hollow-eyed and sullen -- hardly the carefree spirit he had seemed before. Like many of the others, he was shirtless; he was almost the only one among them besides Jason who wasn’t covered in tattoos.
A door opened somewhere, and heavy footsteps sounded as someone came out onto the deck. He was a repulsive figure, nearly as fat as he was tall, with a large hanging gut, and a wide toadlike mouth above multiple chins. In one of his fat hands he held a coiled whip. The man carried himself like a captain as he walked the length of the deck; all of the men stood fast to attention as he approached, and relaxed again once he had passed.
The captain stopped in front of Richard, looking up into the young man’s eyes. Richard held his peace, standing tall and still. The captain growled something Jason couldn’t quite catch, to which Richard nodded once before the captain moved on. Now he stopped in front of Jason, his smile widening to a hideous grin. Jason fought not to gag at the man’s malodorous breath and the deplorable state of his teeth.
“Aha… Midshipman Hiller. Fresh meat,” the captain hissed into Jason’s face. “Always a pleasure. Not that there’s much meat on you,” he said in obvious disapproval, poking and pinching at Jason’s arm. “That’ll change soon enough. A few weeks under the lash and you’ll be a new man.” He clapped his free hand heavily on Jason’s shoulder. “You’ll soon learn what my rules are, and you’ll learn to obey them without question. Those who don’t are punished accordingly.”
Jason heard Richard shift slightly where he stood; the captain shot him a withering look, and he quickly stilled. The captain looked back at Jason, and he nodded. “Understood, sir.”
“Good,” the captain growled. “We’ll see how well you fit in here. Remember your place and you won’t go wrong. Stick close to Midshipman Carson--” he nodded to Richard “--and he’ll teach you what there is to know.”
He moved on, and Jason relaxed slightly, watching him in silence. The captain moved up and down the lines of men, addressing a few of the other men individually before moving back toward the door he had come out of and calling out over his shoulder, “You all know your places, lads. Those who work hard will be well rewarded come the night!” He gave the crew a sick, lewd grin before returning belowdecks, slamming the door shut behind him.
The men moved out of line and began to disperse, each to his own chore; Jason moved nervously over to walk next to Richard as he headed below after the captain. “So what am I supposed to do? What’s your job?”
“I’m the cook,” Richard answered, not looking at him. “As well as the captain’s whipping boy.”
Jason frowned. “I thought the captain said that only those who did wrong are punished. It’s not fair to you.”
“Captain de Grott,” Richard said slowly, “has no idea what the word ‘fair’ means. He exploits the strong and preys on the weak, all for his benefit. You’ll see what I mean soon enough.”
Jason stayed silent, reflecting that he really didn’t want to see what Richard meant. But he had other questions. “What do the scars on everyone’s heads mean?”
“Shows how long they’ve been here,” Richard answered. “You’ll get yours eventually, too. Every year on the day we each arrived here, we get another tally, and then a beating. One bruise for every year of our ages.” He lifted up his hair for a moment, showing Jason the tally scars on the back of his neck. “This August will mark my sixth anniversary here, and my twenty-third birthday.”
They reached the kitchens, and Richard immediately got to work peeling and chopping mounds of vegetables. He set Jason to work boiling water and cooking meat, which Jason did with a good deal of self-consciousness.
There was a lot to do, which was understandable, given the size of the crew. Richard was a fast and efficient worker; Jason tried hard to keep up with him, though the raw meat was somewhat tougher to cut than the vegetables, and he had to continually wash the blood and juices from his hands, which distracted him from making sure the pots didn’t boil over. How Richard managed to do all of this by himself was beyond Jason. Though, he’d clearly had a lot of time to perfect his skills.
It seemed a long time had passed before the kitchen door swung open, and the captain poked his fat, ugly head into the room. Jason looked up, spotted him and immediately snapped to attention, and Richard followed suit. The captain prowled around the room, whip in hand, inspecting their work. Jason stood still, following him with his eyes.
There came a sudden hissing behind him, and Jason realized one of the pots was boiling over. He sprang to clean up the mess, and the captain snarled at him. “Move faster, boy!” He turned to Richard and barked, “I expect you to whip this one into shape for me, Carson! Back to work!”
Jason could hear Richard resuming his own duties as well, chopping vegetables unusually fast. He was fervently wiping spilled water from the stove around the pot that had boiled over, and gave a cry of exasperation as the other pot began to boil over as well. He did not look up or slow down, knowing the captain had heard him and fearing the consequences if he should stop working.
“Idiot!” the captain spat in Jason’s direction. (Jason was sure he felt an actual glob of saliva hit the back of his head, and shuddered.) He heard the captain snap his whip, and risked a glance sideways, just in time to see the captain grab Richard by the hair and haul him up against the wall. Richard stayed there, his head bowed, as the captain hefted his whip again, clearly aiming for Richard’s back.
Jason sprang forward as the lash began to fall, not wanting to see an innocent person injured. “No! …”
“Stop! Don’t hurt him!” Jason moaned in his sleep, thrashing a little in Zeph’s arms.

Zephyros jerked awake as Jason shifted, nearly kicking him. He looked at Jason in confusion, then held Jason closer, nuzzling his hair and trying to soothe him. "Shh, Jason... it's a dream, shh," he whispered, petting Jason's hair softly. Not knowing what kind of dream Jason was having made him afraid to shake him awake. He knew how things like that could simply become part of the dream... he'd knocked people out for trying to shake him awake.
He nuzzled Jason's ear again, trying to wake him softly. "Wake up Jason, shhh..."

The captain turned to face Jason, his whip still held in midair. "Get back, boy, unless you want a lashing instead!"
"Do as you like with me," Jason said bravely. "But leave him alone."
The captain promptly grabbed Richard's hair again and shoved him back toward the counter he'd been chopping vegetables on. "I'll deal with you later!"
He turned back and grabbed Jason, holding him tightly as Jason struggled against him. The man's breath was hot and foul on Jason's ear; the captain was nuzzling his hair, murmuring to him in a voice that didn't belong to him. "Shh, Jason... it's a dream, shh..."
Okay... what? Jason turned his face away, gagging as the captain's breath invaded his nostrils again. He struggled harder, but the captain continued to nuzzle him and murmur. "Wake up Jason, shhh..."
"What the heck is..."
"...going on?" Jason cried aloud, jerking awake.
He was still for a moment, looking around in bewilderment. He was in his bed, in his own room at Dunehelden, not on a pirate ship. And instead of the fat, hideous captain, he was being held by his beautiful boyfriend. Jason sighed in relief, snuggling into Zeph's embrace. It was all a dream... just a strange, scary dream.
"That was too weird," he murmured. "Thanks for waking me."

Zephyros looked at him blankly, then held him close. "You looked like the dream was upsetting you... Apparently I should have tried harder to wake you."
He pressed his cheek against Jason's hair, running his fingers through it lightly. "Looks like it was more than scary. Care to talk about it? You almost kicked me," he said softly, chuckling slightly.

Jason laughed, blushing a little. "I'm sorry. Of course I'll talk about it.
"My dream was really weird... there were three different parts to it. The first one was nice. I was swimming in a cove by the sea in the summertime with a bunch of other people... there was Liam Farrell, and someone who looked like that new Bio professor, and someone who almost looked like Professor Hawk -- they called him V -- and a few others. Three of them looked like elves from a Tolkien book -- there was one male, a blond, and two females, one blonde and one brunette. Then there was a guy with dark curly hair and lash-marks all over his back, and eyes that reminded me of yours. His name was Richard, according to the one called V.
"We didn't stay in the water long because it started to rain. We left the cove and started heading through a forest, presumably toward a house on the other side. Then the dream changed, and it was winter. I was walking into the woods from another direction with a man I didn't know. He kept saying how much I reminded him of his ex-boyfriend who had left him for a girl, and how much he hated his ex. That scared me, so I ran, and he turned into a wolf and chased me. I climbed up a tree to get away, but he grabbed my ankle and pulled me down.
"Then the dream changed again, and I was on a pirate ship. Richard was there too. We were standing on the deck with the other crewmen, and then the captain came out and started talking to us. Ooh, but he was UGLY. Really old and fat... he looked kind of like a toad. He came up and started talking to me, calling me 'Midshipman Hiller' and saying I was 'fresh meat'. I was assigned to work with Richard as the cook. Richard and I talked a little as we went down to the kitchens, and then we started working. The captain came in, and said he wanted Richard to 'whip me into shape'. Then one of the pots was boiling over -- I'd stopped watching it when the captain came. I went to clean it up, and the other one started boiling over too. The captain called me an idiot and told us to get back to work. Then I looked around, and the captain had Richard up against the wall -- he was going to whip him.
"I went to intervene, and the captain told me to get back unless I wanted a whipping too. I said the captain could do what he wanted with me as long as he didn't hurt Richard for my mistake. Then the captain turned around and grabbed me, started nuzzling my hair and whispering to me that it was a dream and I had to wake up. I tried to get away from him, but he kept on holding me. Eventually I woke up.
"I'm guessing it was really you who was telling me to wake up," he said with an embarrassed grin. "Sorry if I hurt you when I was tossing around."

Zephyros stuffed his fist into his mouth at the last part with the captain, trying desperately not to laugh. "Maybe I should have been more insistent," he snickered once he'd managed to not laugh aloud. "Though it looks like my way did work well enough though."
He nuzzled Jason's hair. "Do I still feel like a creepy pirate captain?" he snickered, kissing Jason's forehead.
