Lamadre pursed her lips, thinking very carefully over the next few questions. With only three left, she could afford to veer closer to the line. "Since you have become what you are, have you suffered from any physical maladies?" she asked. "A cold, the flu, food poisoning..." She raised an eyebrow.
If he were a vampire, Angel should, relatively speaking, be in exceptional health. If he were a mage, well, it would not be unheard of for him to go so long without illness, but she was already beginning to suspect...

"Mmmm, no." He looked at her coolly.

"Two questions left, then," she commented, running a finger around the rim of her glass. Her eyes darted up to him, studying him intently.
"Are you affected strongly by the sight of blood?" she prompted, unflinching. He might very well veto that one -- it would be well within his right -- but she might be able to catch something in his expression all the same.

"Less and less vague by the second," he unconsciously licked his lips. She'd already gotten his mind on dinner with the cookie, and he was mildly frustrated. "Why don't you slice that finger open and we'll find out?"
She could take that however she liked.

She chuckled dryly, her lips pulled tight in a thin smile. "I have one question left," she commented airily, though she scarcely needed it. Still, it would be a shame to waste her final question.
She ran her tongue contemplatively over her lower lip. "In your lifetime, have you ever killed anyone?" she asked darkly, her voice just above a whisper. She was quite certain of what he was already, of course, but she couldn't let the opportunity pass. And there was something about him that put her on edge...

Whispering. Cute. He wanted this one. He really wanted this one. He faked an expression of surprise, then leaned back in his chair, not really expecting her to be fooled.
"I think I'm gonna have to veto that one on general principle," he teased.

Lamadre smirked and shrugged one shoulder nonchalantly. "I might have expected that," she replied, much too casually for the subject of murder. But then, his response told her all she needed to know. She hardly expected him to answer truthfully.
"Very well, my final question," she mused. She pressed her knuckle against her lower lip thoughtfully. "Are you in a relationship?"

He touched his tongue to his teeth and looked her over slowly. "Now I would really love to know why you would ask that."

She shrugged. "I'm merely curious," she replied sweetly. Somewhere in the back of her mind she could hear the whisper of a tired maxim, regarding curiosity and cats, but then, curiosity had led her this far, and she saw no reason to change her ways now because this man was so disturbingly intriguing.
He would get along quite well with her old classmates, she thought.

"Curious is a great word for what you are." His smile broadened and sharpened. "If you wanted to explore that answer more thoroughly, please feel free."
Angel stood up and walked towards Lamadre, hands behind his back. "Ready to answer? What do you want from me if you get it right?"

She thought for a moment. "Perhaps we could say that you owe me a favor," she suggested slowly. "We would have terms, of course. Nothing that would threaten your life, nothing that would require you to do anything to which you are morally opposed, nothing that would require you to harm those to whom you are attached... Other limitations, if you would like, can be added."
She raised her eyes toward him. "More importantly, however," she said darkly, "what do you want if I get it wrong?" She suppressed a shiver which she attributed to the chill autumn air.

"Nothing that would make me harm those to whom I'm attached, and nothing I'm incapable of doing, whether I explain why or not." He stopped about a foot away from her. "Everything else is fine. Challenge me," he said playfully.
"If you get it wrong..." he looked up at the ceiling for a moment and hummed a little tune. "Keep the favor anyway, and I get a similar one?"

She swallowed heavily and nodded. "It's a deal," she replied without hesitation. Only after the words had left her mouth did it occur to her that it might have been a bad idea. It was too late for second thoughts now, anyway.
"My answer, then," she announced. She bit her lip. "Would I be correct in saying that you are a vampire?" She felt her overwhelming certainty waver briefly.

He leaned down a little and wondered how specific his answer should be.
"For the purposes of this game, yes." Let her wonder; she'll never ask.

Lamadre hesitated. She had won; what purpose would he have in letting her win? Surely she had won fairly. He had worded his response strangely, and she could not help but believe there was more to it than that. But she had won, and she was not about to openly question that.
She smiled. "And I can call upon you for my favor at any time," she reminded him smoothly. "I believe I will save it for something important."
Somehow, though, Lamadre did not quite feel as though she had won.

"I hope so." He kept standing just inside what he judged to be an uncomfortably close radius. "I'll give you a much smaller one right now, though: my name is Angel. Will there be anything else today?"

Lamadre shifted slightly; she felt unnerved with him towering over her like that, but he wasn't giving her enough room to stand up. She settled for pulling herself up straighter and turning slightly on the couch to give herself more room.
"Angel," she repeated. "Is that your birth name, or did you choose it yourself?"

"Yes." He smiled and moved back a little, biting down the urge to... well, several different things.
This was going to be fun.

Lamadre pushed herself off of the sofa, trying to keep a reasonable distance between herself and Angel. She was somewhat trapped at present, and she felt inclined to believe him when he claimed to be more powerful than others.
"Unless you have something you'd like to talk to me about?" she asked, attempting to shift from between him and the sofa without turning her back to him.
It occurred to her that asking if Angel was available might have been more appropriate than asking if he was in a relationship; however, with how close he was standing and the way he was looking at her, she didn't think the question was entirely necessary.

He chuckled.
"I'd like to see you again. Got a night free soon?"

Lamadre hesitated. Her instincts screamed at her to say "no"; however, though she had never felt quite so threatened, she had braved vampires much stronger than Angel in the past. If she could endure Conall, first at the Athenaeum and then here, for several years, why should she react so strongly to Angel?
And for some reason, the same force that was compelling her to flee seemed to determined to pull her closer. "I'm free most nights," she replied simply. "How is the day after tomorrow?"

"Mm, wonderful, let's go someplace fun. See you here, or should I pick you up at your room?" He looked straight into her eyes, keeping his tone even; his restraint was becoming obvious, with how little he moved. He couldn't quite tell whether she was feeling what he wanted or not, and that made it worse. "I won't hurt you, you know," he said teasingly. "Not unless you ask nicely."

Lamadre shifted unconsciously closer to him. She couldn't quite explain why she felt such morbid fascination with him, but there was something about him. She felt a sort of nervous exhilaration at their proximity, and couldn't bring herself to pull away just yet.
"I'll keep that in mind," she replied coyly, "but I'm not nearly as nice as my reputation suggests."

"No shit. Why do you think I want to talk to you?" he whispered, taking a step closer and leaning in very quickly to kiss her on the cheek.
Before she could slap him, Angel then leapt away, took a single breath, and vanished.

Lamadre swayed in place, grabbing the back of the sofa to brace herself and bringing a hand to her face. She felt flushed, almost feverish, and it took every ounce of willpower within her not to collapse back onto the sofa the moment he was gone.
Whether he had literally vanished or had simply moved to quickly for her to pick up on was beyond her; she felt too intoxicated to differentiate the two. Lamadre had many reasons to look forward to seeing Angel again, and until then, she had important things to be done.
Lamadre straightened herself up and headed off purposefully to her dorm.
