The place was so big!
Jared had spent the past several days wandering the campus of Dunehelden, seeing all forms of students practicing all sorts of unusual arts as he tried to map his new "home" out in his head before classes started, and yet the one thing that had astounded him the most was the sheer size of the place. There was definitely something wrong with that. Or maybe it was a sign that he was finally in the right place.
He paused and brushed his hair out of his face, staring at the doors in front of him. The library.
A smile twitched at the corners of his lips and he let his hair fall back in front of his eyes, adgusting the guitar strapped to his back before entering the room. The instant the scent of old books and leather hit him he relaxed, and without wasting a second started searching the shelves.
It was a shock when he ran into someone.
"Oh! My appologies, ah, sir."

Ian was tired, and hungry, and quite frankly didn't want to stare at words on a page anymore. Jonathan's "assignment" was wearing him out, even if he didn't let it show. His roommate would probably just get a kick out of it. So Ian was gathering some books to ponder over later that night, once he'd had dinner and a nap. Which was what he was doing when a large thing that was not empty air suddenly appeared in his path.
"Ah, shit." He muttered to himself, bending over to pick up the books. Then he looked up and stopped abruptly. It was someone he had never seen before. That was new. "...um... it's not a... er... problem. Really..." He mumbled, trying to gather the books up in his arms.

"Doesn't make me any less sorry," Jared rumbled, stooping to help pick up the scattered objects. He gathered in silence, not sure what to say now that he had forced himself into an akward silence with a total stranger. After another moment he straightened and cleared his throat, organizing the papers into a neat stack before holding them out. Catching a glimpse of the persons face made his jaw drop.
"Holy crap, man, you look like hell!" he exclaimed, reaching out an arm but not actually touching the man. "You're not, like, a zombie or something...right? I mean...I'm not sure if...your skin color is natural."

Ian shook his head, still looking at his books. "No, no... I... um... I just don't spend a lot of time outdoors is all. There are... er... things I need to do inside... with books... and darkness..."
He finished gathering up the books and stood. "Though... you know... I wouldn't be surprised if there actually were zombies running around this school..."

Jared paled slightly and sucked in a large breath, twitching his hair in front of his face. "I'm living in close quarters with vampires and zombies. This is definitely something that will take getting used to," he muttered to himself, trying to ignore the chill creeping up his spine. He focused his eyes back on the Man in front of him and forced a smile, hesitating before pulling his hair back out of his eyes. "Thanks for the...well, I'm not quite sure what that was, but thanks for it. Hey, my name is Jared by the way. I just got here a few days ago, and I haven't really had the chance to meet anyone."
He shuffled the books and papers from one arm to the other and glanced at the man's full arms. "You want some help getting this to wherever? No offense, but you look like you're about to fall apart at the seams."

Ian nodded and held out some of the books. "Um... yeah... I'm still getting used to it and I've been here for months. There's... uh... lots of things to get... er... used to." He shifted slightly. "I'm Ian. I'm a mage. Nice to... er... nice to meet you, Jared."

"You're a little out of it, aren't you?" Jared said, amusement flavoring his voice. He felt himself relax again as he took the offered books and added them to the stack in his arms. "Well, Ian, you should probably see some daylight soon, or you'll need spf 45 as a requirement for life, no offense." He shifted the books in his arms again, trying to get them into a manageable position. A soft snarl escaped his lips in agitation and he furrowed his brow, sighing as he resigned himself to stabbing corners. "Is all this really necessarry? Is it all for only one assignment?"

Ian shrugged, his ears going a bit pink at the daylight comment. "Yeah... one thing. I'm doing a little... er... side project. Just a little research into... things. For life. And stuff." He shifted awkwardly. "I really don't expect you to get it if you haven't met him... which you just got here a few days ago so... I don't... er... yes, it's all for one project." He finished in a huff.

"Him? I'm sure I dont want to know who "him" is." He smiled at Ian and sidestepped so he could take the lead. "Did you procrastinate on this project or something? A report on life is a hefty thing to put off, but you seem to have put it off a few days too long. Is there anything I can do to help you out on this? Help with notes, or..." Jared trailed off and read one of the book titles and made a face. "Perhaps proof reading? I dont think I want to try to understand whatever this is, either." another glance at Ian had him narrowing his eyes. "I caught you on a bad day I'm sure. We should get you to where you're supposed to go before you collapse, Ian."

Ian nodded. "You... you really don't want to meet him, no. And... well... this project isn't for class. And it's less of writing a paper and more of... well... er... forming the theory. I'm... and this going to sound very weird, but... I'm attempting to explain how something can simply begin to exist from nothing." He winced, and waited for the other boy to tell him how insane that sounded.

Jared paused, his eyes getting distant for a second as he pondered the theory. "That's actually a pretty intriguing thought. I mean, there are so many different ways of viewing the sudden existance of something. In theory you can't create something from nothing because it would cause a displacement which may have an effect on the composition of the universe itself. Would it go against the laws that the universe is built from? On the one hand if you were to compare the universe and everything in it to a fishtank filled to the brim with water, adding something to the tank would make it overflow, but if the universe is ever expanding, would it have an effect? Perhaps it's simply a question of science versus magic, does something really just suddenly exist, or does it exist thanks to a rapid form of transmutation? And then there's the probability of a parallel universe that makes the creation possible by trading the overflow..."
He stopped and blinked, twitching his hair in front of his eyes. "Sorry, I guess I got a little carried away. Ignore that. It, uh...Well, feels like you got everything you need."

Ian blinked multiple times and stared in silence. What the hell...
"That's... if it were as simple as... er... a logical explanation I probably would have... you know... found it by now." He shook his head. "There... well... there's magic involved, at least as far as I can tell."

"Yeah. It's the magic part that I'm still not used to. I was taught conventional classes so watching stuff just suddenly...exist... its enough to scramble the way I see things, ya know?" Jared sighed and stared blankly at the covers of the books, cursing himself for spewing philosophy all over the place. "Yeah, like I said just ignore that. Old habits die hard." He forced a laugh and fell back a step, feeling his face start to burn with embarrassment. "So. How long exactly have you been here?"

Ian thought for a minute. "A lot shorter than it seems... really..." He thought a bit harder. "I was a late arrival. Transfered in about a month into the... er... the semester. How are... um... how long have you been here?"

"Three days," Jared replied, a boyish tint to his voice. "Haven't even gotten a roommate assignment yet. Well...at least I dont THINK I have. Honestly haven't checked." He shrugged his guitar back into place as he stared at a group of students laughing quietly at something smokey swirling in the air, quickly averting his eyes when one of them glanced over.
"So! I guess all kinds are here, huh? How did you find out you were a mage, was it like a family thing, or..." He returned his attention to Ian, shocked again at how near death he looked.

Ian shook his head. "No clue. It... it manifested early, and we didn't know what it was. Made for a lot of... er... problems." he coughed and quickly changed the subject. "What about you? What are you, for... um... for starters?"

He blanched, exhaling heavilly. "I'm a werewolf. Least, that's what they registered me as, I mean, I dont turn at the full moon and eat people, but... Yeah, I do turn into a wolf and although I can usually control it Sometimes it just...doesnt work. there's not really a different way to put it, i get out of control and have to move somewhere else and start all over. Makes livin' life tough. Yeah, I'm gonna...stop...talking about that though."
He grasped for a new topic and ended up looking back at the books stabbing him uncomfortably in the ribcage. "Do you have a major you're going for? That's an interesting report to be whipping up."

"I'm a literature major." Ian said, shifting the books a bit in his arms. "But the thing I'm working on now has nothing to do with my lit classes, or even my mage classes. It's... complicated. I'm sure you'll probably find out soon enough..." He shrugged. "Trouble seems to come looking for us here... at least for me..."

"Well, that sounds sinister," Jared murmured, glancing over his shoulder subconsciousely. "Ugh, I suppose it's too late to opt out of this unfortunate discovery, too, considering I'm already enrolled."
He tried a good-natured laugh and felt himself choke as dread flooded his brain. It was almost like he had just fallen into a book or a sit com, and there was some terrible thing that everyone was afraid to mention lest it bring bad juju or something. "Not the most confortable feeling in the world," he mumbled to himself. The dread settled like a cold pit in his stomach. That was fine, at least he could ignore it if it was turning into a physical thing.
