Kemekin tried him damnedest to keep from cackling as he knocked on the door. Sure, he could have gone to Ellie, but that was probably the first place Scott would look for him. And it was in Kemekin's best interest to not be found.
"Hoshi~," he called, as loudly as he dared, aware how voices carried in the hallways. He rapped on the door with his knuckles, drumming out the little da-nuh-nuh, da-nuh-nuh into for EPSN's Sportcenter. "Hoshi, this might be a life or death situation," he said brightly. "I need to disappear for an hour or two." Da-nuh-nuh, da-nuh-nuh.

Hoshi blinked, lowering his book slightly. Was that--that sounded like Kemekin. At his door. Pounding out the Sportcenter intro.
He pushed himself off of the couch and slowly made his way to the door. He rubbed his eyes slightly. He wasn't exactly sure what time it was except that it had been a long time since he slept. Which didn't mean all that much, really. He yawned and opened the door.
"Kemekin...? What are you doing here at--" He glanced at his watch. "Five in the evening. Huh. I could have sworn it was later than that."

Kemekin beamed at the professor, shifting his weight from one foot to the other and back again.
"Yeah. I'm actually wondering if I can chill here for a little bit. Someone may or may not be out to get me."
May being a certainty. Because he had left a note at the scene of the crime. Typed, of course, so that his handwriting wouldn't get him caught, but still. The message was there.

"Right," Hoshi said dryly. "Might. Just might. So what did you do this time?"

Kemekin quirked his mouth to one side and dug the toe of his sneaker into the carpet, ever the false picture of innocence.
"Well," he said, slowly. "There may or may not be a professor running around who has very recently been coated in nail glue and then covered in feathers and sequins." He grinned. It was an expression of evil. "I will forevermore be referring to said professor as the Coretti-saurus Rex. But." He flicked his hair out of his eyes.
"Put me back about eighty bucks, I can tell you. The feathers and sequins were only like five bucks. But nail glue is expensive when you buy it in quarts. I didn't even know they sold them in quarts. But apparently, if you pretend to be picking up an order for a salon you get a discount. Twelve dollars instead of the usual eighteen. So trusting. I must have an honest face."

Hoshi gave an exasperated sigh. He really should have been less shocked, given. In fact, he probably would have been slightly impressed, were Kemekin not constantly in danger of getting himself in deep trouble. He supposed he should be thankful that the headmistress showed him some sort of strange favoritism, but that wasn't exactly a comforting thought.
"Alright. Come inside, and don't burn anything down." Hoshi stepped aside and closed the door behind him.

"Muito obrigado." Kemekin snickered and skipped into the room, looking around as the door was closed. He spotted the book in Hoshi's hand.
"Whatcha reading?" The question was equal parts genuine curiosity and an automatic attempt at a subject change. He doubted Hoshi would ask more questions unless it was necessary, but an authority figure was an authority figure, and Kemekin acted on impulse far more often than not.

"House of Leaves." Hoshi held up the book to Kemekin, then dropped back down on his couch. "Feel free to watch the TV or something. I'm not sure what else there is to do in here."
The apartment was on the messy side, with books and other random clutter strewn here and there. It wasn't dirty per se, but it certainly had the look of a place that was seldom cleaned and never reorganized. The room was a bit dusty and smelled a bit like a library, though the sweet scent of vanilla spice air freshener clung faintly to the room. There were books and papers from god-knows-when left here and there, and a stack of things from when he used to teach English at a public middle school in one of the corners--essays he asked students to let him keep, little things the kids had given him, assignments he hadn't gotten around to giving back. Things he hadn't looked at in ages.

Kemekin followed Hoshi's offer, sitting down on the floor and thumbing curiously through a stack of paperbacks.
"Oh hey!" He pulled one of the volumes carefully from the middle of the stack and held it up-- Faulkner's Sanctuary. "I've been looking for this. We don't have it in the library. Got the Snopes Trilogy, though. Read those, Hoshi?"

Ellie walked lightly down the corridor, her eyes scanning the doors for number 103, a package wrapped in bamboo-print paper balanced in her arms. She had been at a medical conference at the CMU in Ruijin, China for the past week, and coming back to find the castle still standing had been a pleasant sight.
Ellie changed her grip on the present to hold it in one arm while her newly freed hand fished in her pocket for her cellphone.
I hope you're awake, she texted to Hoshi, because you're going to have a healer at your door in about twenty seconds.

Hoshi almost didn't hear his phone over the sound of the television, which he had deliberately turned up loud enough to tune out any interfering noise...like students knocking on his door. Because, really, Hoshi was busy. With important things. Like Guitar Hero. Hoshi was totally beasting "Smoke on the Water." He was almost tempted to ignore the text when he saw the flashing from his phone. One of the students had found his cellphone number and was circulating it around the school, and while Hoshi appreciated a good prank call as much as the next person, he was getting tired of being asked if his refrigerator was running, in part because the fridge in his kitchenette had actually stopped working in the past few days, which just kind of made the joke seem cruel. A wide grin broke over his face as he read the message. My fridge is broken and I haven't had a solid meal in days. (Also I misssed you.)

Ellie had reached the door by then and set the package down, actually laughing aloud when she read his reply. She kicked the door playfully and scratched on the wood like a pet.
"Then let me innnnn~," she called, her voice colored with a chuckle. "I might cook for you if you bribe me."
Which was ridiculous. Cooking for Hoshi was almost prerequisite for getting through her day now. But.
She scratched the door again for good measure.

Hoshi laughed, throwing open the door and wrapping her in a bone-crushing hug.
"Your nephew has been very unkind to me while you were gone," Hoshi said with mock-seriousness before pressing a soft kiss at the bridge of her nose. "Terrible," he said emphatically.

The initial force of the hug forced a mild squeak from Ellie, which turned into a giggle.
"Oh you poor, dear thing." She folded her arms over his shoulders, brushing her fingertips lightly along the back of his neck. "Let me guess, he hid your anime dvds and planted firecrackers in your sock drawer."

Hoshi stiffened slightly. "I hadn't thought to check my sock drawer, actually," he said, mostly to himself. "I should probably be careful opening that tomorrow morning."
Hoshi tugged her inside his apartment, beaming down at her. "So. I distinctly recall mention of dinner. I've been surviving on ramen and Red Bull for the past week, so..."

Ellie gave Hoshi the kind of smirk that reminded people who her nephew was. "I said I would cook if you bribed me. And-- oh!" Ellie wriggled out of Hoshi's arms and bent in the doorway to pick up the package. It was decently heavy, and she had to use both hands to get it off the floor.
"I got something for you. The man outside the shop was dressed like Master Roshi, so I had to poke around." Her smile turned sweet and she held the package out for him, pivoting slightly at the ankles in a hopeful little dance.

"Oh?" Hoshi grinned, taking the proffered package. "Just so you know, I have yet to find a piece of DBZ memorabilia that I don't own already, but I'm always fine with duplicates."
Hoshi tore quickly through the wrapping paper, throwing bits and pieces all over the floor of the living room with little regard for mess.
"Oh, wow," he said quietly, when he finally reached the contents of the box. He gingerly picked one of the teacups from box, turning it over in his hands. "Wow. This is really nice."
He smiled sheepishly and replaced the cup. "I don't really have any tea good enough to warrant a tea set like this. All I've got is the generic kind from the grocery store. Maybe I should talk to Kazari about getting something nicer."

"Way ahead of you. Look in the teapot." Ellie ran a hand through her hair, feeling proud for Hoshi's reaction to the tea set. The rope-coil design that the pottery had been molded into had caught her eye immediately in the shop.
So had their selection of tea leaves.

Hoshi looked curiously at the pot, smelling the sampling of leaves inside. "Oh, these are nice."
He smiled, setting the pot on the carpet. "My grandparents were kind of tea fanatics. We had tea with breakfast every morning when we were visiting for the summer. My mother used to get irritated because they wouldn't let her drink coffee when we were there."
He pulled one of the samples from the teapot. "Feel like having a tea party?" he asked, grinning.

Ellie perched on the countertop as he spoke, folding her legs neatly. His little anecdote made her chuckle.
"How about tea with dinner?" She tucked her hair behind her ears and swung her top foot slightly. Her eyes lifted to the ceiling, tapping her lower lip in thought. "I could make you a nice casserole." Struck by a sudden memory, she gave him a sly look. "And I'll try not to use anything that needs to be stove-cooked."

Hoshi grinned and pulled himself to his feet, then wrapped his arms around Ellie's waist. "I think that sounds like an awesome idea." He tucked a strand of her hair back behind her ear and pressed a kiss against her hairline.
"And tea is one of the few things I can make well," he said proudly. "Any suggestions for which kind we try today?"

"Hmmm..." Ellie curled her fingers into the fabric of Hoshi's shirt.
"There's a mocha-chai tea in there. I'm pretty sure the blend has raspberries in it, too."
