Jaymie lay sprawled on the couch with his legs over the arm and his hair taking up what space his body didn't. He held his biology text in the air above his face and glared at it, as if he could intimidate it into doing his homework for him. He would've greatly preferred to go grab Ozora and/or Aura and raise some hell, or convince someone to let him play with the metalworking tools; instead, he was stuck inside trying to decipher diagrams about mitochondria and think up some experiment project that didn't sound stupid or boring.
He glanced over at his lab partner.

Hitoshi sat in the floor on the other side of the coffee table. He bent low over the book, turning the pages periodically and scribbling absently in a spiral-bound notebook every few seconds.
Hitoshi despised partnered assignments. Typically either partners were chosen individually -- which left Hitoshi with whoever was left after the frantic scrambling to be with friends -- or teachers chose the pairs, and either usually left him with someone who was content to have him do most of the work or would spend the entire time irritating him and nearly sabotaging his work.
In this particular instance, their teacher -- who was rather new to Dunehelden -- had decided that since Jaymie was new and Hitoshi was at the top of the class, naturally Hitoshi would be able to help him with the assignment. Hitoshi, to say the least, was less than thrilled.
"Have you at least read the material?" he asked, after a long moment of silence.

Jaymie gave Hitoshi a mildly irritated look. Normally, he would be fine with some snarky arrogant kid, but this was not the best day.
"Yes. Have you?"

Hitoshi's hand tightened slightly on the corner of the book. He glanced indignantly up at Jaymie over the top of his glasses.
"The assignment requires a three-dimensional cell model of some sort, an essay, and a slideshow presentation," he continued. "What are you capable of?"

Jaymie sat up languidly and turned towards Hitoshi, theatrically pulling one knee up to rest his head on. "I'd prefer to do the model and make a presentation out of the essay. Do you think you can handle the rest by yourself?"

Hitoshi's eyes narrowed slightly behind the frames of his glasses. He sat up straight, looking straight at Jaymie.
"I'd prefer it if you would allow me to check over your work along the way," Hitoshi replied coolly. "A second set of eyes might catch mistakes that you wouldn't. I would at least like to hear your plans for the model before you begin."

Jaymie stared at the boy for a long moment.
"You know, the point of a group project is to work together, not to start out with the presumption that your partner is an incompetent bottom-feeder. If you're that anal-retentive, I could just step back and let you do all the work; I get the feeling you're used to that."

"Forgive me for wanting to maintain my grades," he replied peevishly. "Since you're obviously offended by the implication that I'd like to check your work before slapping my name on it, I suppose I'll just let you turn in whatever brightly colored flower-print shoebox diorama you concoct and hope to god that somewhere under all the doilies and lace is something resembling an actual cell."
Hitoshi turned back toward the book, scribbling once more on the notepad. "I'll give you a copy of the essay when I've finished. You can use the outline of the essay for the slideshow."

Jaymie grinned ear-to-ear. "Doilies! I hadn't even thought of that, thanks. I could sew a great big multi-colored lace thing, stick beads on it..." he blinked. "Hey, on a non-sarcastic note, do you know anything about fiber optics?"
"Man, I don't mind if you wanted to look over it, but don't pretend you're not being a dick about this," he said lightly.

"Fiber optics?" Hitoshi raised an eyebrow. "Not particularly. Why do you need to know about fiber optics?"
He paused for a moment. "I'd suggest speaking with the physics professor. He might have some advice. You might also be able to get Zed Barker to help, though I'm not sure if I would trust him with my grades."

"Because I want to make a moving model. If we can make a really cool-looking one going through all its little processes, that's an easy A. Or at least one worth its time to get."
"The lycanthrope guy? Okay." Jaymie smirked. "You know, for an introverted sophomore you sure know a lot of people."

Hitoshi licked his lips, looking back at his book. He had already taken notes on most of the important points, and had about half of the essay outlined.
"I make a point to know people." He glanced up. "By the by, I'd make a point of avoiding the thing that calls itself 'Jonathan', though I'm sure you've already heard of him."

"Vaguely." He swept up his book and flopped back down onto the couch. "I've heard he's an obnoxious loser."

Hitomi had spent the entire last half an hour traversing the entire castle with some hopes of finding her brother. She had missed him after his last period (fifth floor), the dorm had been empty (second floor), Rudeth swore Alex and Hitoshi had went to the courtyard (ground floor), Alex said that Hitoshi was studying and probably in the library (outside), Fable threw a book at her (third floor), and quite frankly, were she not so stubborn, she could have called it quits long before now. But Hitomi was a very stubborn girl, and she did not put forth this much effort to not find her brother. She couldn't even remember why she needed to see him -- something about books or something.
She peered into the student lounge, hoping to see someone who could continue directing her around, and just maybe send her somewhere her brother had actually been.
She blinked. There her brother was, in the last place she would have expected him, sitting in the floor near the coffee table. "Gah! Hitoshi! Do you have any idea how hard you are to track down!" She grabbed a magazine from the coffee table and smacked him in the back of the head with it. "Can't you at least tell someone where you are?"

Hitoshi rubbed the back of his head, staring up at his sister.
"Can I help you?" he deadpanned.

Jaymie's eyes widened as Hitomi walked in. Oh my. He sat back up again, tossing his tangling hair back behind his shoulders, and gave the girl his best charming smile.
"Sorry, it's my fault; we have a project together, and I dragged him in here for it. You must be his sister... I'm Jaymie, nice to meet you."

Hitomi glanced at the young man on the sofa. She hadn't noticed him before, partially because she had been so intent on her brother and partially because he had been lounging. He was... pretty. Not just attractive, but tall and dainty and with hair longer and silkier than any boy had the right to have.
"Hitomi, though it sounds like I've been mentioned already," she replied, glancing back at her brother. She gave Jaymie a wry smile.
Hitomi tossed her bag onto the floor near her brother, stepping over the arm of the couch and plopping down on the other side. "I don't think I've seen you before."

He grinned. "Only in passing." Cute and social. Nice. He hoped his lab partner wouldn't be trying to kill him for this, but hell- Jaymie thought he could take him.
"I just transferred in this semester. Still kinda new to this whole... weird powers thing," he wiggled his fingers. "I guess it's easier when your whole family's in on it?"

"You'd think so, wouldn't you?" she mused, tucking a flyaway strand of hair behind her ear. "So what are you, anyway?" Given that he was focusing on the powers, she doubted he was a vampire. New vampires usually had far more important things to worry about. Maybe a mage.

He looked at Hitomi out of the corner of his eyes and chuckled. "That... makes me feel a little better, if I'm not the only one lost."
"I'm uh..." he gazed up with a playfully exasperated look on his face. "God, what word did they use... uh, Chosen. Pretentious, but I guess it fits."
"I'm some sort of... crane-werewolf-thingie." He smirked. "What about you?"

She laughed lightly. "Well, that's a new one. That's definitely more unusual than the pack of werecats we have running around. That suits you though, I think. "
She shook her head lightly. "I'm not really anything special. Just part of the family. My aunt is a Hunter, and she helped found the school. So was my mother. My uncle is a mage, and my grandmother, and of course my brother..." She gestured at Hitoshi. "But, well... Not everybody has to be special." She smiled slightly, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She didn't look at her brother.

Jaymie gave her a skeptical look. "If you think sprouting feathers is special, you should see my room. Most people think I'm special with a capital Short Bus for much better reasons than that. Magic is... well, hell, I'm not here to lecture you."
He leaned forward on one elbow and stage-whispered to her: "Have you ever dropped paint balloons off of one of those high towers? Bet it's fun." He winked.

Hitoshi slipped the paper inside his biology textbook and slammed it shut, narrowing his eyes. "I think I'm going to leave before one of you says something terribly incriminating in front of me." He glanced toward Jaymie. "I'll have the essay to you by Monday."
Hitoshi stuffed his things in his bag. "Hitomi, in case you're looking for me again, I plan on looking for Alex, getting something to eat in the kitchens, and heading back to my dorm." He glared at his sister, hoisting his bag on his shoulders. "Is that detailed enough for you?"

Hitomi smirked slightly. "Paint balloons?" she mused. "I can't say I have--" Hitomi turned back at her brother, smirking. She rolled her eyes. "Fine, fine," she sighed with mock irritation, waving him off. "We don't need you anyway. Shoo."
She shook her head as her brother walked away, turning back toward Jaymie. "He's really not so bad, you know," she commented. She smiled.

Jaymie waved to Hitoshi as he left as well.
"Yeah. He seems like one of those guys who needs to prove something to himself, but he's actually pretty amusing once you get past that." He grinned. "But now that he's gone, I'm all out of things I have to do for the day. I don't suppose you have any plans I could join in on, or maybe you wouldn't mind me dragging you into mine?"
