Thankfully, Ellie and Hoshi had come across no one on their way to the kitchens. Navigating through the dark mess hall was a bit of a hazard, but manageable, and upon reaching the kitchens Ellie searched for the lightswitch with her magic. She would have just felt around for it, but one never knew what Rhythan would decide to leave out after hours. Ellie had once accidentally dumped her hand into a tub of live lobsters and had no intention of reproducing that.
"What are you in the mood for?" she asked, turning back to look at Hoshi as the lights came on.

"Hm..." Hoshi followed Ellie into the kitchens, leaning against one of the marble counters. He smiled. "I'm always in the mood for something spicy..." He contemplated it for a moment.
"How about omelets? You could have free rein to add whatever ingredients you like." Hoshi grinned. "You could add your special peppers."
Hoshi, of course, would not be touching the food until it was time for him to eat it; he had no delusions about his culinary capabilities.

Ellie grinned. "Okay." She crossed to one of the refrigerators, saying, "I'll get the ingredients if you get the hardware."
"So how are the classes going?" she asked as she gathered. "Do I need to apologize for anything Kemekin's done lately?"

Hoshi knelt down by the cabinets, shuffling the pots and pans. It was a bit of an adventure -- various teachers had donated to the collection, which seemed to consist half of old and barely usable pots, pots large enough to bathe a small child, and several woks. Eventually, underneath an entire set of old cast-iron cookware, Hoshi managed to find a nice looking Teflon-coated pan.
"He's been doing quite a bit better now that he can actually read the material," Hoshi commented. He pushed himself to his feet, then kicked the pile of pots back into the cabinet and forced it closed. "He's very..." He considered the most appropriate way to phrase Kemekin's very unique way of handling essays. "Creative. His overall grade in the class is steadily improving, if nothing else. I'd actually like to recommend him for my Creative Writing class next year. I think he'd be a good addition to it. He seems to do better when he's given more freedom; he struggles a little with the more formal essays."
He absently poked over the spice rack, and one of the little bottles tipped over and nearly rolled off of the counter. Hoshi fumbled a bit, quickly catching it before it could fall in the floor.

Ellie smiled as she chopped peppers and chives. "That's good to hear," she commented, now stirring the greens into the bowl of eggs she had beaten. Her smiled turned into a smirk and she turned her head to look at Hoshi just as he caught the spice bottle. "He's like his father, then. Ol' Kem used to spend hours trying to get through an essay, and then spend another two hours decorating the pages with stick-figure battles. They got pretty elaborate."
Ellie set the pan onto the stove top and turned the heat on low, pouring the mixture in when it reached temperature. "Back in our sophomore year of high school, Kem went through a phase where he wouldn't do any book reports he was assigned. He would read the book, then construct elaborate plans to take over the world in-character for the story. He'd type out notes and schematics and turn those in instead." The eggs sizzled. Ellie folded them over and let them cook a few minutes longer.

The spicy, mouthwatering scent filled the room. Hoshi leaned in toward Ellie, watching her as she cooked. Hoshi laughed lightly.
"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, it seems." He grinned. "You'll have to ask him to show you some of his work sometime. His work is some of the most interesting I have the opportunity to grade."

"Oh?" Omelets done, Ellie transferred the food to two plates and set the pan on a cool burner after turning off burner she had used. "What has he done?"
She turned to face Hoshi fully and, not noticing he had moved, paused and blinked to find him in such close proximity. "Why, hello there."

"He and his friends made a home video adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo as a martial arts fantasy movie. Most of the other students did glittery posters." Hoshi grinned. "He cast Nina Paem as Edmund Dantès. I think they had a bit too much fun with the roles."
Hoshi froze, his breath catching in his throat. He gave a nervous laugh. "Hello, yourself."

Ellie let out a bark of laughter and clapped both of her hands over her mouth to cut the outburst short. She managed to calm down in a minute or two, beaming at the professor. Yes, Kemekin was most definitely his father's child. Who else would have thought of a project like that?
Ellie watched Hoshi for a moment before her eyes dipped to the collar of his shirt. One side was crooked. Without thinking she reached up to fix it.

Hoshi leaned in so that his forehead was nearly pressed against hers, breathing in her soft lavender scent. The spicy smell of peppers still permeated the air.
He pushed a small bunch of curls back away out of her eyes, and without realizing what he was doing, bent down and placed a lingering kiss at the corner of her mouth.

Ellie smiled and rested her hands on either side of the base of Hoshi's neck, running the pad of one thumb along his jawline. She pulled closer to him and turned her head slightly to kiss the tip his nose and then again, this time her lips finding his.

Hoshi tilted his head slightly to get a better angle, nipping lightly at the edge of her lip. Ellie still tasted faintly of chocolate and caramel, and a lingering flavor of chili peppers.
Hoshi moved one hand to tangle in her silky hair. He braced the other hand against what he thought was the counter; for a split second it felt ice cold, then a sharp, scalding pain shot through his fingers. He jerked back, yelping slightly. The burned digits went instinctively to his mouth.

There was a low, gravelly chuckling from the doorway. Fable hobbled in and gave a low whistle. "She taste that bad?" He guffawed and made his way to the pantry, from which he grabbed a bag of homemade jerky.

"Oh!" Ellie gasped at Hoshi's retreat. She glanced back at the burner and sidestepped away from the stove. Fable's rude remark made her cheeks flush a deep shade of pink, but she made no move to acknowledge it. She grabbed Hoshi's wrist and pulled his hand closer to her-- her magic made quick work of the burns.
"Is that better?" she asked quietly.

Hoshi's hand felt suddenly as though it had been dipped in cool water. The tender red flesh faded back to its normal light gold, the feeling slowly returning to his hand. He gave her a soft smile. "Much," he sighed. "Thanks."
He glanced over at Fable, his expression hardening. "It's a shame, about your little pet," he commented, his arms wrapping around Ellie's waist. "I can't imagine why no one has helped you look for him, given how kind and generous you've been to everyone here."

Fable's grizzly eyebrows came together in a frown. "M'not here to be kind and generous," he growled, slightly stung, a piece of jerky dangling from his lower lip. He took a few heavy steps in the pair's direction, paused, and made a rumbling noise deep in his chest. He turned on his heel and stalked to the door, taking his snack with him.
The scent of peppers became noticeable then. His face scrunched up and he sneezed loudly, hitting his head solidly on the door as he jerked forward.

Ellie winced noticeably at the sound of Fable's head hitting the door. She watched him leave, her expression somewhere between pity and scorn, her hands finding their own way to rest on Hoshi's shoulders. When the librarian's footsteps faded to nothing she glanced at Hoshi. She was going to pretend Fable had said nothing, if she could help it.
"Should I make the stove apologize for burning you, Hoshi?"

Once Fable had left the room and Hoshi was once more alone with Ellie, his expression softened, and he gave Ellie a slight smile.
"I think I'll be alright. It was more my fault than the stove's, really." He paused for a moment, running his thumb gently along her jawline. "You aren't going to let him bother you, are you?"

Ellie quirked her mouth to once side. "Nah, of course not." She leaned her head slightly into Hoshi's hand. "He's a big puss. I find ignoring him works well enough."
She smiled coyly. "Now if I remember correctly, we were up to something."

Hoshi smirked, pressing a soft kiss on the tip of her nose. It had been a long time since Hoshi had felt as strongly about anyone as he did about Ellie; it was, in some ways, a scary thought just how thoroughly he had fallen for her. She had the uncanny ability to make him feel like he was a teenager again. Not to say, of course, that Hoshi was terribly responsible when he wasn't around Ellie...
"Breaking curfew, losing sleep, neglecting schoolwork..." Hoshi grinned as he ticked off each offense. "Probably breaking another half dozen school rules that the headmistress would make up on the spot." Hoshi tilted down to press a quick kiss to her mouth. "Sound about right to you?"

Ellie curled her fingers into the fabric of Hoshi's shirt, smiling. She giggled. "Mm. I'd say closer to a full dozen. One of which might include forcing you to wear a dress."

Hoshi laughed, his arms resting around Ellie's waist. "You know, those omelets are probably getting a little cold," he commented. "We probably shouldn't let them go to waste."

Vincent walked softly through the mess hall toward the kitchen door, smiling at the smells of food and the sounds of soft, familiar voices coming from inside. He crept toward the door without a sound and poked his head in, grinning at the pair who stood there. "Anything good in there?"
