Ariel was panting for breath by the time she reached the sickbay. She leaned against the wall to catch her breath for a minute, then hurried to the storage closet and began looking urgently through it. The syringes and salicin were right where Ellie had said they would be; she took the boxes out of the closet and set them out carefully on Ellie's desk as she waited for the others to get there.

The gurney was wheeled into the Bay soon after. Ellie led Dubhiarr in steering Vincent in. She retreated to her desk, selected a syringe, and pulled a proper dose of salicin from the vial. She flicked a needle a few times to make sure there were no air bubbles in it, and came back to Vincent's side. Into his thigh went the needle-- through the fabric of his pants and all. The drug went straight into the man's bloodstream.
The student who had gone to fetch the bags of ice reached the Bay a few minutes after the gurney did. Ellie placed the bags at Vincent's knees and underarms and placed her hands at the man's throat to once again check his vitals.
"There's nothing else we can do," she said, quietly, "but wait. Give a few minutes for the salicin to work, then take the ice away."

Diana winced as Ellie plunged the syringe into Vincent's thigh, looking at the healer in worry. I thought the ice was supposed to help his fever. What will the salicin do?

Salicin reduces, pain, fever, and inflammation, Ellie explained, now that her hands were free to sign. It's extracted from the bark of the white willow tree-- synthetic salicin is used to make Aspirin.
The ice is going to help the salicin take effect at a faster rate.

Diana nodded, relaxing slightly at Ellie's explanation. She returned her gaze to Vincent, taking his hand again as she read his lips. He was talking to Christine still, telling her how badly he had grieved after her passing, and how his family had split apart because of it.
Diana bit her lip and turned away, fighting tears. She didn't want to know how badly he missed Christine. It wasn't really his fault, but it still hurt, and if Vincent ended up not remembering what was happening to him now, Diana was going to be very compelled to refresh his memory.

Ariel continued watching her father long after Professor Harrows looked away from him. He was telling Christine how badly he had missed her, but how he had eventually let go of her memory, for the most part, and fallen in love again. Seeing Diana's name on his lips over and over again, Ariel turned and tapped Professor Harrows on the shoulder. She should be seeing this!

Diana felt a hand come to rest on her shoulder, and reached up to place her own hand on top of it without turning to see who was touching her. She took some small comfort from the gesture, but hated the knowledge that there was nothing more to be done for Vincent except waiting for the salicin to work. How long would that take?

Ariel blinked in confusion as Professor Harrows put her hand on top of Ariel's without so much as turning her head to see whose hand it was, or giving any other reaction. She considered gently turning the professor's head herself, forcing her to see what was happening, but she wasn't sure how Professor Harrows would take it. With luck the salicin would kick in soon, and everything would be okay...

Dubhiarr watched the goings-on with a certain amount of awkwardness mixed in with her concern and anxiety. From what she could hear from Professor Hawk, he was telling the object of his hallucinations all about his relationship with Professor Harrows. And oddly enough, Professor Harrows wasn't paying attention at all. Ariel was trying to catch her attention, but failing. Dubhiarr wasn't sure what more she could do to help matters right now. What could any of them do, really, but wait?

Vincent's body gradually started to cool to a healthy temperature, thanks to the ice and the salicin. His hallucinations continued, and so did his quiet murmuring.
Something was pulling at his very being, urging him away from Christine. Vincent stayed where he was, resisting the urge in alarm and confusion. What was going on?
You're being called back, Christine explained softly, moving back from him. You're not meant to stay here. Ariel and Diana need you. Go to them.
Vincent nodded, embracing her one last time. Goodbye, Christine. I'll see you again someday.
Someday, Christine agreed. Give Ariel my love... and don't be afraid to give Diana yours. All of it.
Vincent smiled and nodded, then turned away from her and followed the force that drew his very being onward. The warm light of Heaven faded into a cool greyness, and he began to feel his body again. Life and all that went with it was returning to him.
Vincent blinked, looking up at the world around him. He was lying somewhere soft, in a room that smelled like lavender; his body was cold and damp, and there was a small, stabbing pain in his thigh. What had happened to him?
He looked around in confusion at the people who stood around him. Rudeth, Ellie, Dubhiarr, Ariel and Diana. They must have brought him here. He met each of their eyes in turn, except for Diana's -- her back was to him -- and attempted to speak.
"What... happened?"

Ariel kept her eyes on her father's face as he continued to speak softly in his delirium. His body was getting cooler, thanks to the ice and salicin. This was good. Now hopefully he'd wake up soon. He was saying goodbye to Christine... something in him must have known he was recovering from his fever.
She let her anxious expression relax into a smile, just as her father blinked and looked around in confusion. His eyes were clear now, and he seemed to know where he was, if not why.
"It's okay, Dad," she told him soothingly, taking his hand and holding it. "You're in the infirmary; you've been really ill. Everything's going to be okay, though." I hope, she added in her head.

"Ill...?" Vincent repeated quietly, confused. "Really? That's all?"
So he hadn't died? It had seemed so real... he could still hear the echoes of Christine's voice in his head, as clear as a bell. He must have been hallucinating... but why his mind had shown him Christine, he could only guess.
But a part of him wanted to think that that was what would have happened if he had died and come back. Christine would want him to give Ariel her love, and give his own to Diana. Christine had accepted her death and faced it bravely; she wouldn't want him to stay in grief and solitude without her, but to move on and find true love again, as he had done with Diana.
Diana... she still hadn't noticed that he was awake. Of course, she couldn't hear him speak, or see him from where she was sitting. Vincent sat up carefully, reached out and touched her shoulder, brushing back a strand of hair that had fallen in front of it.

Another hand touched Diana's shoulder, brushing back a lock of her hair; she turned her face slowly toward the hand and looked down at it, breathing in a familiar smell. Her eyes widened in surprise as she saw and smelled that it was Vincent's hand. He was awake!
She turned around to face him, a smile of relief wavering on her lips, and signed to him. How are you feeling, Vincent? Do you remember anything?

Vincent nodded, retracing his memories. "I remember everything, I think. I know I was in choir class before I fell ill. I must have been hallucinating. Was I... talking at all? While I was out of it?" He recalled everything he had said to Christine; had Diana read his lips and seen it all?

Diana nodded slowly, her face growing pained again. Did he remember any of what he had seen?
You said a fair bit, she signed. You were hallucinating about being in heaven with Christine. You told her how much you've missed her, how badly her death affected your family, and how you would have liked to have the chance to say goodbye to Ariel and I.

Vincent nodded slowly. Apparently Diana had seen most of what he'd said, but perhaps not all of it. The pain in her face told him that she'd missed the part about his love for her and his acceptance of Christine's death.
"I think you looked away from me too soon," he said with a soft smile. "I told her about you, and how I fell in love with you and let go of Christine. I still treasure her memory, but my heart has healed, and now it belongs in full to you."

Diana sat back for a moment, digesting this. Vincent seemed sincere; she had no reason to believe he was lying to her to make her feel better. He had never lied to her before. The hallucination had been real to him, so why wouldn't he react in real ways to what he saw, heard and felt?
Her smile returned, strengthened; she took his hand in hers and kissed it, then signed to him again. I believe you, Vincent. I'm sorry for doubting your committment to me, even for a moment. Can you forgive me?

"Of course," Vincent answered, smiling softly as he met Diana's eyes. "And can you forgive me for making you believe I was a fool who couldn't let go of his past?"

Diana nodded and smiled, then leaned down and kissed his lips briefly. She pulled back and looked at him fondly, brushing a strand of sweat-dampened hair away from his forehead.
You should probably stay here for a while and rest, she advised him. You've missed a lot of your next class anyway, as have the rest of us, except for Ellie. Turning to the students, she smiled and added, I'll write up notes for your professors explaining why you were late.

"I have no intention of moving until Ellie says I can," Vincent assured Diana, then looked up at everyone who had helped him, particularly the students. "Thank you all very much for helping me. How long was I out?" he wondered aloud as the thought came to him, hoping he hadn't kept anyone from an especially important class.

Rudeth had never been quite so relieved as when he saw Vincent open his eyes at last, and he let out a quiet sigh. He'd known that Ellie could heal him, and that it was probably nothing serious... But still he had been worried, and he knew Ariel and Diana must have been terrified. He knew what it was like to see someone you cared about in trouble and be able to do nothing.
Rudeth hovered several feet back from them, feeling somewhat awkward about intruding on what seemed to be a rather intimate moment, and he got the impression Dubhiarr was feeling about the same.
He looked back over at Vincent and Diana once the conversation was directed back to him and smiled. "It wasn't very long, I don't think. We're just glad you're okay."

"As am I, believe me," Vincent said with a smile. "I'm terribly sorry for causing such a stir and frightening you all so badly. Does anyone know why I collapsed?" he asked, looking especially at Ellie. If anyone could tell him, surely it would be the one who had healed him.

Ellie emerged from storage, where she had been putting away the salicin and syringes.
"You seemed to have come down with a rather horrible bout of the flu," she told him. "I was able to heal your symptoms, but not your fever." She smiled apologetically. "I have to wonder what happened to make you so ill."

Vincent shrugged. "It was odd... I felt perfectly fine all day today. I do recall getting sneezed on today at lunch, but I don't know why something like that would have taken effect so suddenly or severely. Frankly, I'm just glad to be well again."
