The game was an old one—the PS2 had been popular back when her parents were teenagers, and the Fatal Frame series was just as dated. However, it never failed to entertain.
Chris had downloaded the emulator that morning—now, she could plug her laptop up to a tv, and a controller into her laptop, and be able to play as well as if she’d actually had the system. Oh, internet, how Chris loves you.

Akane didn’t know Chris very well, but the older girl had been the only one in the student lounge when she’d reached it, and had invited her to play video games.
Akane liked video games.
She sat right up next to Chris and watched the screen as if it were a brilliant movie. They had been at it for hours, and Chris had just found the proper key to get into a blocked house in the game’s haunted village. The lights were off, pillows had been shoved in the windows to block any light, and the girls were quite immersed in gameplay by this time.

Chris led her character—Mio—down a hallway in the Kiryu house. Several doorways were available to her, but she headed straight towards the end of the corridor, hung a left, and went through a door that creaked eerily as it was opened. The adjacent room was large, open, and square. Rows of staring dolls lined the east and west walls, and two life-sized girl dolls stood side by side on pedestals in front of the northern wall. Chris brought Mio up to the doll on the right, who seemed unfinished, and spammed the X button for a few seconds until text boxes popped up.
You place doll head on doll.
You place doll hands on doll.
Chris waited for there to be a clack, which would indicate that whatever whatchamahoozy had needed to be unlocked… had been unlocked. There was no indication that that had happened, however.
“Darn.” Chris furrowed her brow and shook her controller slightly. “What are we missing?” She spammed X around the doll some more. Another text popped up.
The doll seems to be missing its eyes.
“Gee, thanks Game.”

Akane hugged a cushion to her stomach, mouth quirking to one side as she watched the screen. "Chris, it's hands are moving!"
Indeed, the doll's pale hands were clenching and relaxing in a rhythm very much like a heartbeat.
"I don't like this room anymore-- let's go look for the eyes."
Out the door went Mio, and into the dark hallway. The doll parts were hidden in chests around the house. Where hadn't they looked?
Out of nowhere, a pair of ghosts identical to the dolls in the previous room latched onto Mio's legs, making horrid screeching noises.
Akane screamed and flailed, falling over sideways.

"Gah!" Chris jumped a little, more from Akane's reaction than to the actual attack.
Mio fought to get away from the ghosts and looked through the viewfinder of the Camera Obscura.
"Which one is it?!" There were two-- and they were identical. One was actually a ghost, and the other was just a possessed doll. The camera's exorcismal power would only work on the ghost. Chris took her chances and shot the one closest to her. It did no damage.
"Ah f-!" Chris caught herself, thought better of it, and snarled, "ff-french toast and syrup!"
The other ghost-- the one that was a legitimate ghost-- launched itself at Mio. It attached itself to her and clawed at her stomach.
Chris placed her hand flat against the face of the controller and bashed all the buttons at once, twirling both joysticks like her life depended on it. "Get off, you cabbage-patch doll from hell! Grah!" Flail.

Andra was bored. Her father had told her in no uncertain terms to get out of his sickbay... admittedly, she had broken one of his more dangerous medicine bottles and nearly cut her hand open trying to clean it up...
Sighing, she slowly trudged through the halls, pausing at the sounds coming from the student lounge. Peeking in, she blinked and snuck in quickly to watch. She didn't want to distract the girl playing, after all. All she could see as she looked at the screen was a close-up of the ghost attacking the character. It was not a pleasant sight, but oddly it was too fascinating for her to leave. But she kept her mouth shut as she climbed OVER the back of the couch.

When Kassandra came over the back of the couch, she landed on Akane's other side, and Akane died a little. She squealed and buried her face in the cushion she was hugging.

Chris, who was still in the midst of battle, jumped so badly that she actually fell off the couch. Akane's squeal had pierced her ears just as the girls in the game were double-teaming her. Chris paused the game and lay sprawled on the floor where she had fallen, trying to calm her racing heart.
"Holy cheese, Akane. I think you're scarier than the dolls are!"
Chris rolled her head over and saw, upside down, the new face in the room.

Kassandra sighed. "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt the game. I just wanted to watch. Dad kicked me out. Said I was the biggest natural disaster he'd ever met. And that was including the magical ones."
She looked down at Chris. "I don't think I know you. Do you come by the sickbay, like, ever?"

Chris grinned from her rather awkward position on the floor. She extended a hand for a shake.
"Chris Lyckander. Nah, I don't really get hurt much. I spend most of my time in the choir room, anyway. I think my dad has been to the sickbay more often for hitting his head on the door frame."

Kassandra shook her hand, snapping the fingers of her other hand. "I knew something about you was familiar. Andra Stryker. Daughter of everyone's favorite James-Bond-impersonator. At least, if you listened to Rhythan you would THINK he was. There's just something about 'Dr. Stryker' Rhythan finds absolutely irresistible."
She grinned at the upside-down game player. "Were you going to play, or just let us startle you? I thought that's what the game was for."
