Vincent stepped into the faculty lounge, glancing around for any sign of the man he was looking for. Aha, there he was. Vincent smiled as he headed in Tristan's direction, catching the man's eye and greeting him.
"Afternoon, Tristan. Do you have a minute or two to spare? There's something I've been meaning to speak with you about."

Tristan glanced up from his book, looking over the other professor. He didn't normally talk to Professor Hawk, but then, Tristan normally kept to himself around the other professors, apart from the rare occasion when Smoke or Rivienne dragged him into something.
"Sure, what's on your mind?" Tristan closed the book and set it on the table beside him, then leaned back against the chair and propped his feet on the ottoman.

Vincent settled down in a chair beside Tristan's, leaning his arm against the back of the chair with his body turned toward the other professor.
"You may or may not already know this, but as of ten days ago I am now a mage. There's a bit of a long story behind that; I won't bore you with it. What I came to ask you is if you could tell me whether or not my being a mage would have any effect on my position as a Hunter."

"A Mage?" Tristan raised an eyebrow. He certainly hadn't heard that, and though a part of him was curious how exactly that happened, he supposed that it would be best to answer Vincent's question before.
"Guess we'd better start with a little history lesson, before I an explain that." He took a deep breath. "As you probably already know, being a Hunter now doesn't exactly mean the same thing as it used to. Back centuries ago when the organizations were formed, the point was to hunt down dangerous creatures and eliminate them. Creatures like Vampires, Lycanthropes, Fae...and Mages. Especially Mages." He looked straight at Vincent. "Unlike the others, mages always appear to be perfectly normal people, and this made them dangerous."
He straightened up in the chair and shifted around slightly so that he was facing Vincent. "Of course, that's obviously not the case anymore, at least with most Hunter groups. There are still a few that hold those old beliefs, of course." He shrugged one shoulder. "Not much you can do about that, but they're few and far between, like the KKK or the Nazi party. They refuse to let go of their prejudices.
"In more modern groups, being a Hunter is about learning to compensate for the disadvantages of being a Mortal. You learn about things like cold iron and silver. You learn how to tell a leannan sidhe from a Vampire, or a pooka from a Shapeshifter. You're taught to be wary of magical creatures, but for the most part, while the jury is still out on Vampires, Hunters are content to let Mages and more benevolent shapeshifters lead normal lives. We're more of a police force than, for lack of a better word, witch-hunters." Tristan smirked.
"Now, it's still pretty damn rare for anything other than a normal human to become a Hunter, but it does happen. Usually those are people like you, who gain their powers late in life." Tristan nodded toward Vincent. "They don't like to let in others, even Mages, because it could be potentially dangerous to give that sort of inside information to someone who could potentially be an enemy. But it does happen from time to time, especially in the more liberal Circles. The group Rivienne and I are both initiated into will accept non-Mortals as long as an established member of the Circle will vouch for them. That's how my mother got in, and that's how I got in.
"Back on the subject, I suppose what this means to you, is that even if you're a Mage, if you still think of yourself as a Hunter, it shouldn't change anything. This is just one more tool at your disposal."

Vincent leaned forward and sat in attentive silence, nodding every so often as Tristan answered his question. He knew much of that already. When Tristan fell silent, Vincent sat back a bit with a small smile. He wasn't sure how much use his particular kind of magic would be to his Huntership, though that was probably because he still knew very little about it.
"I do still think of myself as a Hunter," he nodded. "I think I'll have to do some research on my magic before I can decide whether it will be useful to me as a Hunter; according to Smoke, it's not a very common kind of magic at all."

"Oh?" Tristan raised an eyebrow. "So what's the story, then? I'd love to hear about this uncommon magic of yours."

Vincent smiled, leaning forward again to tell his story.
"The night my magic manifested," he began, "I was on patrol in the courtyard when I heard two people screaming. I rushed to see what was the matter, and found Ellie in what I first thought was a sort of seizure, with Korlian nearby; he told me that Ellie had been sleepwalking toward the woods, and he had kept her from getting beyond the wards.
"I told Korlian to run and get help, and then knelt beside Ellie to keep her from hurting herself -- she was screaming, thrashing and scratching at herself. I held Ellie still and sang to her in an attempt to calm her down, and my magic arose through my voice. Ellie woke from her nightmare, and I calmed her down so she could rest peacefully. Hoshi helped me take care of her once I took her to the infirmary.
"A week after that, I was talking with Valerian on my way to class when I accidentally broke my nose on a doorframe, and Valerian ended up drinking some of my spurting blood while he helped me. Naturally my newly-magical blood sent him on an acid trip, which was how I officially found out what I now am. Thankfully Ellie was able to lessen the effects of my blood on Valerian's mind.
"I spoke to Ellie after that incident, and she confirmed that my magic had broken a Fae enchantment upon her, and that had helped her wake up from her nightmare. We discussed the possibilities of what my magic might be able to do, and then I went to Smoke for more answers. I demonstrated a bit of magic for him, and he told me that my magic acts differently than other high magic -- it's a matter of commandment and obedience rather than cooperation. He said that he wanted to look things up in the archives, and that he'd have more information for me by the end of the week."

"Magic that acts differently from other high magic, huh?" he mused. "Sounds kind of like fae-magic, from what I know of it. That might have been why you were able to manage a powerful counterspell like that. Something about your magic resonates with the fae. It's not too surprising, given. It's not uncommon for faerie magic to be based in song, and it's pretty damn powerful in the right hands. I've never actually met a Siren, but I'm guessing you've read The Odyssey. That whole sailors crashing into rocks from hearing their voices thing wasn't an exaggeration, from what I've heard."

Vincent's eyebrows rose slowly as Tristan spoke. His magic was like Fae magic... now that was interesting. Could that have explained why Korlian was so edgy around him lately -- because he had seen something similar between them, or because Vincent now had access to magic akin to what Korlian might have used when he was a full Fae? The thought of having so much power in his vocal cords was somewhat unsettling to Vincent. And with great power came great responsibility, as the saying went.
"That... is very interesting," he replied slowly, out loud. "And it makes a lot of sense. I'm definitely going to have to research this." He made a mental note to seek out Korlian later and try to coax some answers out of the boy, provided he would even be willing to speak with him. Hearing about this from an actual Fae, even a Fae currently in a human body, would probably be more useful than what he might find in books -- if indeed he could find anything at all.

Tristan nodded. "Let me know if you find anything interesting. It's not often I find something to do with magic I know so little about."
