Yuki had been bored, very bored. Even though he had already read most of the books in the library, he hoped maybe they had added to the collection. He walked in quietly. There weren't that many people in there, as usual. He began to walk towards the history section.

Chris pulled her knees up to her chest and ran her hands through her hair. She had one more chapter essay to finish before she could call her summer assignments over and done with. One. More. Essay.
Chris hated history. She loved math, and she loved music, and she loved art. But history was her worst class. Wars and monarchs held no interest for her-- she was horrible for remembering dates and names and maps. She had struggled all through her summer to finish the assignments, and with classes starting the next day she had no room for struggling through her last essay.
Fuck history.
Chris rubbed the heels of her hands into her eyes and flipped back through the last few pages of the chapter.
"Dammit, random dead people-- make sense or I'm going to set this book aflame."

Yuki heard Chris' statement as he passed by her. He looked down at the book the girl was threatening over her shoulder. He had remembered that book well and that chapter in particular. He had read it for pleasure every year since it was assigned to him. History might have been repetitive but it did serve a great purpose, and was certainly not boring.
"Hmmmmmm," he muttered to his self, "I would believe that the dead generals of a war would not be random."

Chris tapped her pencil on the pad of paper that bore only her name and the title of the chapter. There was a pattern of smudges on the page, which suggested that Chris had started and rejected multiple outlines for the chapter.
Chris heard movement and glanced around her. She spotted the other student and recognized him as one of the senior class-- despite the fact that he couldn't have been much older than her.
"Um, hey," she hooked one arm around the back of the seat and looked up at him. "Could you... I'm really lost in all of this. I'd love you forever if you helped me out."

Yuki jolted back slightly in surprize. He hadn't expected for the girl to talk to him. "U-ummmm, s-sure?" he answered quietly. He fluidly took the seat next to Chris and quickly skimmed the page the book was turned to. "Ah, this shouldn't be too difficult," he whispered. "What exactly don't you understand?" he asked looking at her with this cloud grey eyes.

Chris lowered her feet to rest them against the floor and scooted her chair a bit closer so that they both could see the book. She flipped back to the end of the chapter, which had the questions for the essays.
"They want me to discuss varied battle strategy and its effect on the outcome of the battles, and then hypothesize differences in societal development if the victory had been for the opposite side." Chris pursed her lips slightly and furrowed her brow. "What I don't understand is where they're pulling this from. The armies fought and one side one. That's all I'm getting from it."

"Ah, that's were you don't see things as a strategist does," Yuki commented, "War is actually an art. You have to decide which groups of how many and what kind of people should go were. One wrong move and the war could be over in 5 days or 5 years. How well a person defends their side against the offence is also important and the main decision maker in a war, particularly this one." He paused from his inner rant and his face flushed a little.
That was the most he had talked in a long time. "D-does that make any sense?" he asked scratching his head nervously.

Chris huffed. "It makes some sense." She shot the boy a sideways glance. "Some. Erm..." She thought over his words and frowned, curling her fingers exasperatedly into her hair.
"I don't... Could you maybe give an example of what the generals did that differentiated their strategies? Even the way you explain it, they both sound the same to me."

"Well," Yuki pondered, which would be the easiest example. "Ok here we go," he said with a faint smile, "May I borrow your book?" He didn't just want to snatch it, plus, it was more on her side of the table.

Chris lifted one corner of her lips and slid the book towards the lad, resting her chin on one fist. "Be my guest."

Yuki said a quick "thank you" and began to flip pages until he game to a map. "Ok," he said sounding pleased, "Look at this. For simplicities sake we'll call this the blue team and this the red team since that's were their movement arrows are on the map."
Yuki pointed to a city behind a mountain, "This is the blue team base." He pointed to the red lines, "And the red team wanted to get to the blue base. So they decided to be sneaky and send a small group to distract the defense of the blue base while a much larger and more powerful group went around the mountain. So that was their strategy. But the blue guys didn't know about it. So they take the bait and go after the pawn red group, leaving the base unprotected. This sounds like a bad move on the blue teams part yes?"
He looked at the small girl an eyebrow raised and a smile tugging on the corner on his mouth. This was actually fun.

Chris crossed her arms on the tabletop and leaned over the book to see the map.
"Sounds like a capture the flag game," she commented.
In answer to his question, she nodded. "Sure. But if the blue team didn't know about it, then to them it would seem like they were taking out a team sent to scout the base or something. Surely they wouldn't send the whole defense to take out that group."

Yuki smiled. "Smart girl," he said, "they didn't take all their defense but a large portion of it, they only left 1/4th of their guys at the base. Their defense was few because of the battle they lost on the last page, but that's not important."
Yuki returned his attention to the map. "This is were the mess ups start happening. The red team is fighting on the blue team's land so they don't know the terrain or the weather that well. So the red team is stupid and decides to climb the mountain at the beginning of winter and they get caught in storms and most of them die and by the time they get to the blue base the blue defense is already back from beating the pawn. Needless to say the red team was defeated easily after wards.
So the Red teams strategy was to try to be sneaky and look good on paper, but it failed in real life because they didn't know their surroundings. The Blue teams idea was to defend what they had until the weather was more favorable, which looks lame but ended up saving their butts. And sure that wasn't THE end of the war, but it was a decisive battle."
Yuki leaned back in his chair and sighed a little. He flipped his bangs out of his eyes and looked over at her, "Make sense?"

Chris blinked and stared hard at the map, brow still furrowed. She tucked her hair behind one ear and turned her head to look at the boy.
A smirk curled slowly across her features. "Why the heck doesn't the book make it nice and simple, like you did?" She sat back and crossed her legs. "Heh. That helped a lot. Thanks."

Yuki chuckled a little bit. "I'm glad I could make it easier for you," he said running his fingers through his hair. "Any last questions?" he asked shifting in his seat to leave.

Chris smiled and shook her head. Now that the intent of the text had been cleared up, she was sure she could work through the rest of the essay.
"I think I got it. You're awesome." She flipped back to the end of the chapter and picked up her pencil to start on a new outline, then paused. She turned back to the boy and held out her hand for a shake.
"I'm Chris, by the way."

Yuki blushed a little as he stood from his seat. He had never been called awesome before, well, except for his two moms but that was to be expected.
He was about to walk away when the girl turned and introduced herself. "Hmmm, Chris?" he said and smirked a little, "That's a cool name for a girl." He shakily took her hand and mumbled, "I'm Yuki, Yuki Vibrato."

"Hee. Thankee."
"Yuki?" Chris arched an eyebrow. "That's a pretty name-- like the japanese word for snow?"

"Yeah," Yuki said, "It's kinda to make fun of this." He pointed at the streak of white is grey in the right part of his bangs. "My parents had a sick sense of humor."

Chris had to resist the urge to reach forward and touch the streak. His hair looked silky.
"Maybe it's because you're a bit... frosty." A grin fought to show itself and Chris bit her lower lip to keep down a chuckle. "God, I'm a dork. Sorry-- I couldn't help it."

Chris shrugged. "You're... ah..." Words, Chris.
"It was just a pun." She gave a sheepish grin. "Sorry."

"Oh, ok," Yuki said. He felt that she wasn't really speaking what exactly she was thinking but why bother pushing the issue.
"I-if you want," he said quietly, "I can stick around just in case you need more help. I was going to read in this area anyway." Why was he blushing a little bit!? He wasn't that socially inept . . . was he?

Chris shrugged again. Then she smiled. "That'd be cool," she told him. "You're free to sit at this table, if you want-- I can move stuff around to make room for you."

"I don't take up much room," he said to her before turning to look at the shelf of books behind him.
Hmmmm, let's see. World war 1, world war 2, cold war, hmmm, no, didn't want to read about that. Maybe something a bit more . . . MUSICAL HISTORY!! That's what he wanted to read. He rushed over to the shelf where he knew the book would be that he wanted. Sure enough there it was. "The History of the Violin", perfect. He took the book off the shelf and returned to the table. He took his seat again beside Chris and opened the book to begin to read.
