Stephen edged nervously into the student lounge, having followed Dubhiarr in here at a safe distance. He took a deep breath and steeled his nerves, mentally going over what he wanted to say to her one last time. He glanced in her direction, swallowed and made his way over to the armchair in the far corner by the window, where Dubhiarr was sitting with her legs pulled up to her chest.
"Hey, Du."

Dubhiarr stiffened at the sound of Stephen's voice, debating not even acknowledging him. What did he want now? If he was after her forgiveness, he was going to leave empty-handed. It was going to take a lot out of her to even stand his presence enough to talk to him. Eventually she lifted her head and looked at him, her face void of emotion, her voice hollow.
"I don't want to hear anything you have to say, unless it be 'I'm sorry for being such a pathetic, selfish hypocrite'. And you'd better be pretty bleeding sincere about it."

"Yeah, that's... basically what I came to say," Stephen told her with a nod. He met her eyes with his good one, breathing deeply and speaking slowly.
"I was wrong to do what I did and say what I said. It was completely selfish of me to think I knew better than you what was good for you. It should be your choice who you decide to be with, whether a mortal or any kind of supernatural. I had no right to impose my opinion on you like that, much less to hurt you with it, and I don't expect you to forgive me for it. You have every right to hold this against me. We don't even have to be friends anymore if you feel that way. I leave it up to you."

Dubhiarr held Stephen's gaze as he spoke, betraying no emotion. She was silent for a long while even after he finished speaking.
"I appreciate your apology, and I accept it," she told him at last. "I don't think I can forgive you yet, but we'll see. As for friendship... we can try. It's not like we were much more than friends anyway, together or not... I really thought we had potential, though." She smiled. "Guess we're not meant to be. It's not like vampires hook up with non-vampires often anyway."

Stephen nodded, relaxing again and managing to smile back. "Thank you. I'm glad we were able to settle this."
There was really no point in him sticking around, he decided, and took a step back from her. They both probably had things to do, anyway. Homework and stuff.
"I guess I'll see you around, then. Have a good day."

Dubhiarr nodded, making no move to keep him from leaving. "Yeah, you too. See you. And thanks."
She watched him leave, staying where she was. A part of her wanted to lock him out of her life and never see him again... how often did couples-turned-friends actually stay friends after breaking up, anyway? It was like that saying went: "Saying 'we can still be friends' is like saying 'the dog died, but we can keep it'." Maybe it was better to let a dead dog lie.
Then again... what about, say, Nina and Kemekin? She didn't see them together much anymore, but ever since Nina's apology they'd seemed to get along okay, at least as far as Du could see. Time would tell.
