Calling it coffee is probably an understatement, Aramis thought to himself as he watched the coffee maker almost struggle to percolate water through the large helping of coffee grounds he’d put in the filter. It was probably going to be closer to espresso with how concentrated it would be, but it wasn’t flavor Aramis was concerned with. He rubbed his eyes, feeling how sandy they still felt. The cold water he was currently drinking wasn’t helping, though usually it did, and his head ached a little. A doctor ought to know the foolishness in staying up, and a healer (though the title was sometimes stretching it for him) ought to be able to help their own body deal with the effects of a single night’s bad rest. Staying up had been a bad idea, but remembering the reason had Aramis shuddering. Dreaming of giant spiders was a very good way to keep an arachnophobe up for several nights, and not just the one. The worst part was, those dreams were why Aramis was afraid of spiders. Not that it was usually a severe phobia; he didn’t react violently until the little buggers appeared suddenly in his face, and then he usually just jerked back. But at night was when the phobia really picked up. Those dreams always seemed to be very dimly lit anyway.
Shaking his head and waking from his reverie when the coffeemaker buzzed, Aramis poured himself a cup of the… well, it was probably closer to mud in texture than normal coffee, then settled into one of the chairs by the fireplace. The fire was low, mostly because it was still fairly early morning and while it had been banked the night before, Aramis hadn’t been conscious enough to really wake it up. Watching the small flames flicker with dull eyes, he sipped at his cup. It didn’t take long for him to sink into a daze while the fire slowly grew in strength. With only as much light as it had taken to keep Aramis from tripping on his way over to the coffee machine in the room, the red-yellow glow of the fire played games with the shadows in the room and around Aramis. If he’d really wanted too, he could have made himself look downright diabolical. Maybe even like one of those manga bishōnen villains his daughter was always going on about. Not that he could remember a blond one from any of her stories, but that wasn’t the point. Aramis yawned and let his mind go still for a moment, or at least as still as it ever did.

The doorway reflected the red- and cream-colored luminescence of the woman who stood there, blinking around the room as she pulled her long tresses into a loose ponytail. She smelled coffee. Strong coffee.
Considering the dispositions of her husband and son, Aye had taken to steering away from beverages of concentrated caffeine content. It was early, however, and she felt she could be allotted one slip from her caffeine hiatus.
Walking over to the coffeemaker, she caught a glimpse of a figure by the fireplace which, besides her own body, was the only source of light in the room.
"Good morning," she chirruped, thinking that the man would look very much like a movie villain if he had been, say, diabolically stroking a fluffy white cat.

Aramis blinked and came back to the real world with a bit of a start, then sat up straight and looked over the back of the chair. "Good morning to you too. If you don't like your coffee like mud, I wouldn't drink what's there. It's not quite that thick perhaps, but that'll make rockstar's caffeine content look like water."
He grinned slightly, then yawned and rubbed his eyes slightly. "Though if you had a night like mine, it probably wouldn't be so bad."

Aye pursed her lips and looked down at the coffeepot. It bubbled menacingly.
She smiled, went to the minifridge tucked under the table, and pulled out one of Kemekin's Monsters. She'd replace it-- Kemekin had learned not to mind people nicking his energy drinks.
"A night like yours, huh?" She made her way around to the chair opposite the healer's, settling down cross-legged. Her hair spilled over her shoulders and across her knees. There was a shn-k as she opened the Monster, and she grinned as she took a swig. "What happened, if you don't mind me asking?"

Aramis got a rather displeased expression and glared into the fire. "Just nightmares. I never understand where they come from, and they're always the same. Back when I was in school here, I'd wake Keme shouting." He smiled slightly.
"Keme once woke me by hitting me with a pillow and shouting Harry Potter curses at me," His expression turned serious again, which fit the shadows under his eyes better than even the tired smile had. He watched the fire quietly. "Spiders and war..." he said softly, just holding his cup of.... well, there wasn't really a word better than coffee, but it was beyond that.

Aye sipped her Monster and watched Aramis carefully. She was going to attribute angst to him being tired.
Searching for a change of subject, she asked brightly, "How is Andra doing?"

Aramis shook his head again to wake himself up. "Ugh. Sorry. Being kept up by indecipherable nightmares is bound to make people either irritable or angst. I always tend toward angst. Andra's fine. A troublemaker, but it's not the sort that usually gets her hurt. More in line with never doing her homework. And she wonders why I refuse to let her get a personal computer. I'd rather if she needs the web for homework, she has to be in your library. Then I know she's at least mostly on task," Aramis sighed slightly, giving Aye a wry smile.
"I imagine with your son, you understand that. He strikes me as much the sort to skip homework and class as he is the sort to risk life and limb for a rush."

Aye laughed. "Oh, I do. I promise you." Another sip from her Monster.
"Just yesterday he skipped his math and english classes so that he could scale the belltower. Got back to the library just before lunch, with bloody hands and the crazy grin I can only asume he inherited from his father." She shook her head. "Teenagers. Surely we weren't like that."
She smirked. "I'll make sure to check up on Andra when she's in the library. Keep her on task for you," she added with a wink.

Aramis looked confused for a moment. "I don't remember him coming in with torn up hands..." he said thoughtfully, then sighed and rolled his eyes. "I hate to say it, but your son makes my Andra look like a right angel, and she most definitely favors her mother. I'm pretty sure I wasn't like the majority of the kids here, but it's hard to be like that when you're as shy as I was. I blame Keme and your brother-in-law as much as I do Carmen for breaking that shell."
Aramis looked back at the fire and sipped at his coffee. "Your husband most certainly was like that, I remember that much. He still is, for that matter. I don't recall if you were, though." He grinned at her, shrugging.
