Korlian sat on the window sill, looking out into the street. "Don't ask me. I was unconscious and in very bad shape. Which is why Aramis is feeling so sick now. All I knew is what Ian says he heard. Maybe it was another trap and you would have been fine, or maybe they were after you but not only you."
He looked over at Ian, then turned back to the window. He was more interested in what Paula had to say, and in something else to do. His hand still hurt, thanks to the iron muzzle of the gun, but he wasn't going to let Aramis even see that. The mage would heal him without a thought, and then be in even worse shape.

It had taken Paula only a minute to get back to the hotel from the coffee shop. Her heart had skipped beats with every step. Ian's text had disturbed her. It was one thing to break into someone's house, but to blow an entire wall to kingdom come? Who would do that?
Once she had arrived back at the hotel and entered the room, she moved to stand in the center, arms folded. "Alright." She said, "We have some serious problems."

"I'll say we do." Natalie said, shifting a bit. "I don't think your friend is after me. Last I checked, I wasn't a him."

Istvan shivered a little. A dark thought was forming in his head, and he was almost afraid to voice it, but he did anyway. It needed to be said.
"It's clear that they were after someone in your immediate family," he said slowly and carefully, "And since their target is a male, it can really only be one person. Your father." He looked at Natalie. "But why would they target him, I wonder?"

"Who said this wasn't just a trap for Ian?" Korlian pointed out, turning to look at the others with a raised brow. He leaned back against the glass, his knees tucked up against his chest.
"After all, only Ian heard anything about Natalie. And Natalie is probably one of the few people Ian would risk his life for. And Ian is important to Paula, which means that she might not be thinking clearly if the voice got ahold of him. She's really the voice's main antagonist. The rest of us are kind of here for the ride, right? Willingly or otherwise." He looked at Aramis who had sat down on the floor by the door and fell asleep almost immediately.
"Paula, what would be the chances of getting Aramis somewhere he can just sleep until he wakes on his own?" he asked suddenly. He felt guilty about Aramis' current state, since it was mostly from healing him. Maybe it was the difference between his somewhat-Fae physicality and normal human.

Paula rubbed her temples furiously and stood silently for a while before answering. "I think that's fine. In fact, we should probably send Ian to stay with him. Natalie, I think, should remain here. The voice is probably keeping tabs on the hotel, Natalie's house, and her father's work. It's easier for Ian and Aramis to vanish for a while. We'll get them a different room in the hotel and transfer them during the night so that the voice doesn't know which room they're in."
She crossed over to the window and peeked out the curtains, down at the street. Her brain was in full protection mode now, and she was keeping her eyes peeled for the slightest sign of being watched. "As for who the voice is after... I don't know. Both theories make sense, which is a shock because Korlian came up with one of them. I think Ian should be moved to a different part of the hotel with Aramis and the rest of us should put Mr. Burns under constant protection. Natalie, what does your father do exactly?"

Natalie frowned. "He's a lawyer. But he's hoping to run for Parliament so he's been building up his campaign already, which means he's been doing a lot of charity work and... public... speeches..." Her voice trailed off. "You think... maybe he's the target? Since that would put someone sympathetic to us in a position of power? Oh, god..."

Korlian turned back to the glass, ignoring Paula's jib. He wasn't nearly as stupid as she seemed to think; it was just convenient to act it. "I think the voice wants to keep us guessing and we should cover all of our bases. Your father would make a good target, and so would Ian. Whereas say, myself... I'm a pointless target. Paula would probably be thrilled to get rid of me," he flashed her a grin," and no one else really cares either, except my brother. Aramis and Istvan are too peripheral to the investigation right now, and again, wouldn't affect Paula as much as Ian. Your father... well, a man in power who would have very good reason to protect any and all magical creatures really does go against this voice's plan.
"And either way, Natalie, you're a target. So we need to keep you safe no matter who the voice is really after."
He looked at Paula coolly. "Because if this were my plan, I would use Natalie as a bargaining chip, a tool. Of all of us, I probably will have the least difficulty understanding this voice. I've done things like this before, though never on such a grand scale. It's less fun when you have too many things involved."

"A bargaining chip?" Natalie snapped, her voice rising. "A tool? I don't know what the hell kind of game you think you're playing, but I'm no one's tool." She turned away and stormed over to the window, staring down at the street. She didn't particularly want to be in the room anymore. Not with all this talk of this voice killing Ian and her dad and someone using her as a tool.

"Like it or not, Natalie, you are a tool," Korlian said coldly. "He's used all of us, and he's good at it. The only way he ISN'T going to use you is if you're dead. He used me to get to Istvan, Aramis merely to get us involved at all, he used you to get to Ian and he is STILL going to use you to get to your father. And getting angry is only going to make it easier for him to use you."
He looked over at her, interested that of all the places in the room, she had moved closer to the one who had evoked her anger. "So hold your temper, little wolf, and you might get out of this alive. Listen to Paula, she has a fairly good idea of what to do. Not that I'd admit it often, but the point remains. We won't let anything happen to your father or to Ian, whichever is our opponent's target."

As Natalie moved towards the window, Paula moved away from it. She began to pace around, staring up at the ceiling. Her brain continued to work furiously, sorting out different strategies and approaches to dealing with the situation. Finally, she turned to face the group.
"Here what I think we should do." She said. "Ian and Aramis will check into another room under false names and pay cash. Natalie, you'll stay here until we need you. However, I think it's best that your father continue his daily activities. We don't want to let the voice, whoever he is, know how many of us are here. For all he knows, I came alone."
Paula stopped pacing. "If he's after Mr. Burns, he'll want to kill him somewhere where he can make a public display of it... put on a show. Send a warning. I wonder... Natalie, when is your father speaking in public again?"

Natalie, still fuming at the phrase "bargaining chip", didn't move from her spot at the window. "Tomorrow afternoon. He's speaking at a charity rally. He's only got a few minutes, but the rally itself is a big event." She turned finally, staring at Paula, her eyes widening. "That must be where this voice is going to get him! We have-" She started for the door, but stopped when she remembered what Paula said about staying put.
Damn it all... Dad's out there with a target painted on him and I can't even help...

Korlian gave a slight shrug. "I could find him, Paula. Tell him to be extra careful. If he doesn't show, the voice will just find some other way to get him. Something bigger and more spectacular. What would be perfect would be IF we could somehow get him to believe that her father was dead..."
He paused thoughtfully, chewing on a fingernail. "But the question is, how? He's shown a remarkable ability to see through illusions, right? So the simple answer is out. And Aramis is in no way going to be up to any kind of serious magic tomorrow. Very little kills instantly, but Aramis won't be able to heal a normally fatal wound by tomorrow. He's barely able to remain conscious long enough to feed himself."

Ian, who had been silent until then, raised a shaking hand. Natalie, please forgive me...
"We could... um... this may not be the best plan in the world but..." His hands started to shake rapidly. Ian shoved them under his thighs. "...we could turn the tables on him. Set a trap for him instead of being caught up in it. Like Paula said, he doesn't know how many of us are here. I can... um... If we can get one of his... you know... minions... we might be able to get an idea who, or at least where, he is. I think... maybe there's a way to fool him into figuring out who's here..."
Ian flinched, and waited for the tongue-lashing from Natalie.

Natalie turned from the window to glare at Ian. "You're kidding, right? Now you want to use my dad as bait? Unbelievable. You're all unbelievable." She turned back to the window and crossed her arms. "The only way that I would ever be okay with this is if you let me come along and make sure nothing happened to my family."

Korlian glared at her, "You stupid little brat," he hissed. "We have no choice! We can not prevent him from going out, even at risk of his own life. I know how men think, especially men who have a true reason for what they are doing. Your father has you as a reason to keep doing this, and nothing short of kidnapping him would prevent him from making that speech. Especially if he is ANYTHING like you. Of course, we could always use one of us as bait, disguising ourselves to give the speech ourselves. I almost have enough power to do that myself."
Korlian snorted distainfully, "Because all you see is the potential danger to you and yours. I wouldn't expect such a... fae-like action from you, Natalie. I'd expect you to see the bigger picture. And we have no intention of allowing any harm to come to your father. Any more than we allowed any to come to you."
He glared at her again, getting very close to her. "We've already been through hell trying to get this voice. You have no idea the hell we've faced. We want to keep it that way, and this thus far seems to be the best way. The voice wants us all dead, and your family too. He won't stop until he's dead... or all of us are. If you have a problem with what real war is, then I suggest you go find a corner to curl up in while the rest of us are fighting, little girl. As it is, in about three seconds I'm about to go find your father and explain the real situation to him. For some reason, I am rather certain he will side with us."
