Jaebi had found quickly that the easiest way to find quiet place at Dunehelden was to skip a meal and head to the student lounge while the majority of the student population was in the Mess Hall. He used this little bit of knowledge often, usually during breakfast, though occasionally he would choose to go without dinner, as was the case today. Ever feline in his habits, he lounged sideways in one of the armchairs near the back of the room, his legs falling over one of the arms while he supported himself with his elbows on the other. It had most definitely been worth saving up to buy an iPod that could handle all of his music along with quality headphones that could handle the sheer volume of said music. He preferred to block out the world with whatever tunes the “shuffle” setting chose to bestow upon him, usually at a level so loud that he could not even hear his own voice. Which was handy, because he liked to sing along to his music, but didn’t like to scrutinize his own voice. This was his position now, playing solitaire on the screen of the iPod while he followed along with the song vocally. It (singing) was a pastime he only enjoyed when he was sure no one was around, and now that most of the school was elsewhere he sang without inhibitions.

Ariel had finished lunch early and headed down to the student lounge to finish reading the last few chapters of The Hunter's Moon in peace and quiet. The sound of someone singing reached her as she approached the door, and she looked into the room with a grin of curiosity.
A laugh escaped her at what she saw and heard--Jaebi sat sprawled across one of the armchairs, iPod on full blast and headphones securely on his ears, singing aloud to the music--and singing quite well, at that. Seeing that she was unnoticed, Ariel sneaked over to his side and yanked off his headphones, giggling as she spoke to him.
"So when did you plan on telling me you could sing?"

And here was made clear the disadvantage to Jaebi's headphone habits-- it was child's play to sneak up on him when he was listening to his music.
The sudden loss of music (directly into his ears, at least. The volume was so loud that, even with the headphones held away, he could he the R&B song he had been listening to quite clearly) startled him, and he stopped mid-word. Slowly, he tilted his head back, exposing his neck, to look backwards and up at Ariel. A furious wash of color tinted his cheeks and ears, and he smiled rather sheepishly.
"Singing? What singing?" His expression changed to a feign of innocence. "I know nothing-- I heard no singing, I assure you."

"That's because you had your headphones on," Ariel grinned, leaning her elbow on the arm of the chair. "I could hear you just fine. You're really good."

Jaebi gave a crooked grin and raised his eyebrows. "I've never heard myself," he told her. "Thank you, though." He turned off the iPod and held out his hand for Ariel to pass the headphones back to him.

Ariel handed the headphones back to him, lookin at him with a grin. "So how come you sing with your headphones on? You should at least be able to hear yourself singing. And thinking. Or do you really want to go deaf? It's no picnic, or so Professor Harrows tells me. And I imagine it would be a lot worse to lose your hearing over time than to never have it in the first place. All those sounds you still remember but can never experience again."

Jaebi's grin faded a little in thought. There were certainly things he would like to never experience again, but those were memories he preferred to push away. And keep away.
Jaebi sat upright and pulled his knees to his chest, resting his arms, folded, atop them. He turned off the iPod and let it rest on the other arm of the chair. "So what brought you up here?" he asked.

"I came here to finish reading a book, but I heard you singing from out in the hall and decided to forget the book. Music is much more interesting," she grinned.
"So you've seriously never heard yourself sing? You're really good. Try singing with the volume down for once and see for yourself."

Jaebi made a face. "Don't wanna," he insisted, leaning forward to read the title of the book Ariel held. The Hunter's Moon. "Besides, that looks like an interesting read. I can leave if you want to finish it-- doesn't bother me."

Ariel grinned as she mimicked him playfully. "You 'don't wanna'? Why not? You've got loads of talent, and nothing to be ashamed of."

Jaebi rubbed the back of his head, feeling a smile tugging at his lips. "I've just never been one for the spotlight, is all," he told her. He reached over to pat the couch by which his armchair was placed, bidding Ariel to sit.

Ariel sat down and crossed her legs, turning her body to face Jaebi. "So how does a sweet boy like you end up friends with Kemekin?" she asked curiously, leaning toward him and resting her chin in her hand, her elbow on her leg.

Jaebi felt his cheeks heat up slightly, and knew that his face must have gained a slight pink tinge. His answer was, thankfully, a witty one:
"Not sure. How does a sweet girl like Nina end up dating Kemekin?" He mimicked her pose, his expression becoming playful.

Ariel laughed, partly at Jaebi's blush and partly at his joke. "Touché."
She shifted, draping one arm along the back of the couch and pulling her legs up underneath her, still facing him. A thought was forming in her mind, and she felt herself grinning at it. Jaebi would make an excellent soloist, if only Dunehelden had a choir... That was definitely something to talk to her father about. He'd love the idea.

Jaebi followed her shift, mirroring her new position. He tipped his head from one side to the other and watched her, waiting for her to move again. He found himself wondering what she was thinking and then was suddenly struck by the new silence in the room.
"Hey, Ariel," he began, then stopped himself. He flushed a shade of pink so deep that it almost matched the hints of magenta in his hair, then sank back into his chair, once again pulling his knees to his chest and fiddling with his collar.
"....Nevermind."

Ariel blinked, her eyebrows lifting. "Nevermind what? You shouldn't start sentences you don't intend to finish, it makes people curious," she grinned playfully.

Jaebi sank further in his chair, his face disappearing behind his knees until only his spiky hair was visible.
"But I did finish the sentence," he insisted. "With an awkward pause and a 'nevermind'."
The realization that his last visit to the student lounge had consisted of he being the forgotten bystander of Kemekin-slash-Nina affections suddenly struck him. Jaebi curled into a ball of embarrassment and lay on his side in the seat, his reddened ears showing up all the brighter against the snow-white fabric of his shirt. Dammit, Keme.

Ariel giggled, peeking over the arm of the couch at him. She knew she was embarrassing him, but he was just so freaking cute... "You were going to tell me something, or ask me something. What was it?"

Jaebi made a noise somewhere between a squeak and a grunt before answering, his voice muffled by his knees, "I don't remember now. The thought-- it is dead. Lost to the world. I promise. It won't come back. Really." He pushed his head and shoulders off the seat of the chair and palmed his spikes distractedly. A bit of fluff from the chair fell from his hair and Jaebi batted at it instinctively, clapping his hands to catch it just in front of his chin. Slowly, he opened his hands to see if he had caught it and, seeing that he had, triumphantly flicked it away.

Ariel watched Jaebi with a grin and a barely-suppressed giggle, finally bursting out laughing and falling off the couch as she toppled backward. Her laughter ended abruptly with a yelp as she hit the floor. "Eep!"

Jaebi watched her begin to fall and did his best to save her, though the only managed to cushion her head from the floor with his hands.
"You okay?" he asked, a chuckle in his voice as he knelt over her. "Did the fluff hit you? Do I need to make the fluff pay damages for assault and possible trauma?"

Ariel's giggles promptly began again as she caught her breath. "No, the fluff is innocent. It was the huge mob of cuteness that got me," she told him through her laughter. "Sue the cuteness for all it's got. I want a lawyer!"

Jaebi grinned broadly, his eyes narrowing to feline slits. He laughed, partly from pride at being called 'cute' but mostly from Ariel's infectious jovialty. "Oh no, don't sue the cuteness!" he pleaded. "The cuteness only has snuggles and ADHD to offer!"

Ariel giggled even more. "Oooh, well, maybe I can find a bit of mercy in my heart for the cuteness. It didn't mean any harm, it just wanted snuggles... I'm the one who fell off the couch."
She grinned up at Jaebi, quite liking the feeling of his hands cradling her head. She found herself quite unwilling to move from where she lay, even though she knew she had classes to get to... and Jaebi probably did too.
