Hitoshi sighed impatiently, slipping off his watch and placing it on the counter for safe-keeping. He would have hated to ruin it; he had had it for several years. Since his flighty proctor had at long last decided to join them -- and Hitoshi had no doubt the man had been waiting for the most dramatic moment to enter -- he could finally begin.
"We're going to work on pasta and sauces today," Hitoshi announced. "At the front of the room is a table of ingredients. The recipe for the sauce base is in front of you. However, you will add spices and other ingredients to your own taste."
Hitoshi smirked, dragging his fingers lightly over the tops of the containers. "Of course, you've probably noticed I've removed all the labels. I hope this won't be an issue."
Hitoshi glanced at Alex and his cooking partner. Zephyros was...admittedly not terrible looking, and Hitoshi was not one to typically notice such things. He could only hope Alex would be paying more attention to important things, particularly to his cooking.

Zephyros snorted, "Of course you did. Wouldn't want it to be too difficult, no," he said softly, though Alex could certainly hear him. This looked like it was just meant to be torturous to everyone. He flicked his head back, trying to keep his hair out of his face. Maybe he should have tied it back.

Alex leaned over slightly and whispered to Zephyros. "I'd bet he's trying to make it sound harder than it is."

"To what point and purpose?" he asked, sighing. He finally raked his hair back, washing his hands again. He remembered that much; touch your hair or your face and you were supposed to wash your hands again. "This is just going to be SO much fun."

"Don't take him personally," Alex chuckled softly, his hand over his mouth. "He's just trying to be a good teacher and he's brand new at it."

Though Hitoshi attempted to pay equal attention to each table, his gaze continued to flicker back to Alex and Zephyros. Did they have to sit so close, and what on earth were they whispering about that kept bringing their eyes back to him? He felt a knot form in the center of his stomach, and it took nearly every ounce of self-control he had to keep himself from doing something foolish. He needed to trust Alex--which was much easier said than done.
Hitoshi narrowed his eyes, letting his gaze linger on Zephyros just long enough for the boy to realize he was being watched, then stalked off toward one of the other tables to watch the eminent culinary disasters unfold.

Zephyros definitely felt the eyes on him... he looked at Hitoshi and then smirked. "I think Hitoshi is getting jealous."
Though looking at Alex might explain that, Zeph wasn't really interested in people who were just short of albino. Or much younger than him; he tended to prefer his male interests older than him. "Alright... how to start this..."

"Oops." Alex leaned back in his chair, looking mildly embarassed. "Need to get used to this boyfriend thing."
He opened the tops of several ingredients and sniffed them. "This one's pepper, I think. And this green one's spicy, I don't know what."

Rhythan was behind them suddenly, his pale form towering over the two boys. "Psst," he hissed. "That green one's volatile--- I've seen the doctor use it in her cooking; you know spicy has to be an understatement..."

Zephyros jumped, blinking. "Right... no green one then," he said, taking it from Alex and putting it down. "Why did he have to take the labels off? That doesn't make sense."
He looked over at Hitoshi archly, raising a brow.

Rudy grinned, picking up several of the spices and sniffing them. "I'm not so great at cooking, but I think I can manage this. No stove involved, of course. That's my main weakness."
Rudy picked one of the green ones, sniffed, and made a face. "This one's paprika, right?" ...wasn't paprika green? One of these was paprika. Probably. "Oh, and this one's garlic salt. I remember because I thought it was parmesan cheese once covered something in it and it didn't taste very good."

Aritha just looked at him blankly. "That's definitely not paprika. It's oregano. How about we just let me pick the spices, okay?"
Mixing up paprika and oregano... that frightened her. How did she end up with a partner who couldn't tell... salt from pepper!!?? Not that she usually touched them, since she didn't exactly eat, but... ai!

Rudy chuckled, blushing a bit. "Sorry, I'm not much for cooking," he admitted. "I guess I'm more of a...water-boiler, I suppose." He smiled charmingly. "I suppose I'm just lucky to have such a talented cooking partner."
He watched her sort through the spices, trying to pay attention to the spices but only managing to note how deft she was with her hands, and how cute she was when she was paying attention to something. It was no wonder Rudy could never manage to cook anything; whenever he tried to cook, there were always girls around, and girls were much more interesting.

Aritha noticed him watching her and smiled at him. I wonder if he's with anyone... on second thought... no I don't. I would hate to mix him up with his brother over there. If they weren't together she might have trouble telling them apart at first. And something told her accidently kissing Thrall would not work out well.
She felt eyes on her and turned, noticing Zeph looking at her. Either he was jealous, which would make sense seeing as she sometimes felt the same way, or he found her current position amusing since it would have been the same if she had partnered with him. At least he could tell paprika from oregano. Maybe it was a greek thing. They always had plenty of spices in their food. She watched him taste some and laughed as he gagged and almost threw the spice across the floor before catching himself.

Zephyros glared at her when she laughed at him, settling the spice down carefully. He and Alex had gotten most of it figured out... Okay, a bit. They had gotten started on the sauce at least. And nothing had burned yet. Water was boiling with the noodles in it... so far they were off to a good start. He looked to see if Hitoshi was watching and then stuck his tongue out at her.

She just smiled sweetly back, leaning over at Alex.
"Now, he's not giving you any trouble is he?" she asked softly, her smile just wide enough to avoid showing off her fangs. Alex was adorable; probably gay but absolutely charming. She realized she was thinking of him like a puppy and smiled more. Somehow, she seemed oblivious to the fact that her pose was very attention-grabbing, especially to those attracted to her gender. "I can always make him behave."

Alex looked up when Rhythan appeared. "Thanks," he said, with a bit of nervousness. The man's habit of just appearing where he wanted to be bothered him a little, but he seemed nice enough, and unlike the librarian or a few others he could think of, essentially harmless.
He stirred the noodles a bit and made his way through 'salt', 'chili pepper', 'garlic', and 'basil' (the latter two he put aside) as he watched Aritha, Rudeth and Zephyros.
"Oh, he's doing as well as I am. I'm sure Rudeth's giving you more trouble." He flashed a smile to distract the other boy, who was staring rather openly at Aritha.

Thrall grabbed the saucepan without thinking and started heating the olive oil. After a couple of false starts, he found garlic, chile powder, a little chopped bay leaf, and a tablespoon or so of heavenly-smelling dark purplish stuff to toss in.
As he waited awkwardly for it to get to the right point to toss the tomato sauce in, he glanced at Frog.

Frog watched Thrall intently, his face hovering over the pan as Thrall began collecting ingredients. His eyes briefly flitted over the other students, picking up bits and pieces of their conversations and attempting to fit them together into a coherent fashion, and watching the professor intently. However, his gaze always inevitably fell back on the project in front of him.
He sniffed several of the bottles, wrinkling his nose. "This bottle of oil smells like peanuts, and these are basil leaves," he muttered, pointing at different containers. "This one smells like cheese and--" Frog's eyes lingered on a small container. He dipped a finger in, sniffed the powered substance there, then licked it from his finger. He grinned broadly.
"This one is cocoa powder!" he announced happily. "I wonder what chocolate sauce would taste like on noodles." He looked at his cooking partner hopefully.

"...Godawful." Thrall thought back to one of Rudeth's little projects, all the way back in first grade.
He grabbed the cheese without looking at the other boy and tossed in a bit. "Uhm. Peppers. Chile peppers and chocolate. That tastes real good," he said absently.

Aritha smiled, "No, Rudeth isn't much trouble at all. Are you?" she asked, turning to look at him without straightening. She turned back to Alex with a grin. "He hasn't managed to burn boiling water yet, so I think that's a good sign." She watched them for a moment, then turned back to her own assignment, working on the sauce as she directed Rudeth in how exactly to make the noodles. She decided to go for a simple marinara... though she was disappointed to find there was no red wine in the supplies until she remembered she was in an American school.
Silly Americans. This is why they have so much problems with alcohol. It's forbidden, so of course people regularly over-indulge. Normal people who grow up drinking it treat alcohol like any other beverage. A much healthier attitude. Ah well, I suppose the sauce will survive without it.

Hitoshi gritted his teeth, brushing past Alex and Zephyros toward the far table in attempt to distract himself. He wasn't remotely interested in their idle chattering anyway.
Hitoshi leaned over Thrall's dish and, without warning, snatched a spoon and scooped up a portion of the sauce and sniffed it. It smelled...edible. "We're making Italian, not Mexican," he muttered, tossing the spoon back onto the counter. "And you might want to keep an eye on your partner. I don't want him getting into the confectioner's sugar."

Rudy listened intently to Aritha, following her instructions as closely as possible and attempting to keep the noodles from sticking to the bottom of the pot. And succeeding, mostly. He scraped at the bottom, trying to peel off a few pieces of penne from the metal. Wasn't there some sort of a pot that didn't do this? They worked really well that time he burned the macaroni on Christmas was he was twelve...
"There," he grumbled, at last managing to unstick the last piece of pasta. Pasta was boiling, temperature was as Aritha told him, and Rudy was very carefully not burning himself. "Anything else you want me to do?" he asked, beaming.

Thrall pointed at Hitoshi angrily. "Hey, red pepper flakes are a totally valid ingredient in arrabbiata. You said pasta sauce, not marinara."
He looked skeptically at his cooking partner. The confectioner's sugar had disappeared; he grabbed the spoon Hitoshi had dropped and got himself a taste, hoping the boy hadn't dumped it into the sauce. It made his lips tingle pleasantly before he even got it all the way into his mouth.
"Perfect," he said to no one in particular, and checked the noodles. They seemed to be ready to drain.
