Dubhiarr sagged against the sick bay door, gasping for breath as she clutched a stitch in her side. She filled her burning lungs with air and raised a hand to hammer on the door with what strength she had left.
"Miss E!" she shouted, her voice hoarse in her raw throat. "There's an emergency! Please! It's Kemekin!"

The door swept open almost immediately and Ellie, eyes wide, stared at Dubhiarr, one word and one word only escaping from her lips: "Where?"

"Student lounge," Dubhiarr croaked, the fire slowly ebbing from her chest. "Don't know what happened. He went stiff a-and then fell down and c-convulsed... told me to run and get you..." She was shaking now, tears welling in her eyes. "I think it was my fault."

Ellie felt a surge of sympathy for the girl-- she squeezed her shoulder and sent a wave of soothing energy into her body. "It's not your fault," she assured her, remembering her brother's letter describing Kemekin's "meltdowns."
She slipped past Dubhiarr and closed the bay door, taking the hallway at a run. The student lounge was a descent way off...

Dubhiarr carefully led Ellie up the last hallway toward the sick bay, moving slowly enough to not strain Ellie, but fast enough to somewhat keep up with Elan and get to the sick bay in good time. She let out a deep breath when the door came in sight.
"Almost there, Miss E. You'll be okay. both of you."

Elan reached the door and turned to push it open with his back, careful not to let any part of Kemekin hit the walls or the framing. He held the door with his foot for Dubhiarr and Ellie to pass through unhindered. As gingerly as possible, he lowered Kemekin onto a bed and stepped back, his eye catching a glimpse of a pair of legs from behind a curtain on the far side of the room.
"Who's that in the far cot?" he asked, more wondering aloud than anything else. He turned his attention to Ellie then, taking over for Dubhiarr and lowering the healer into her desk chair.

As soon as she was free from both Dubhiarr and Elan, Ellie stood up and went to Kemekin's bedside. The young mage was still shaking, though not nearly as violently as he had been minutes before. Knowing she would be exhausted later, the healer swept her hands across her nephew's forehead, muttering a one-word spell for sleep.
This done, she brushed the boy's hair out of his face and straightened. "That's Professor Conall," she said, her normally soothing voice sounding a bit harsh as she pronounced the vampire's name. "There was an accident."

Dubhiarr bit her tongue for a second or two, remembering that she wasn't supposed to admit to having heard about that incident from Stephen.
Bracing herself and taking a few steps closer to the far cot, she gave the unconscious vampire a once-over. Ellie had done a good job of knocking him out; there were still yellow-green traces of bruising on the side of his face.
"He looks awful," she commented with a hint of satisfaction. "How long has he been out?"

Ellie, now stooping over her desk to add to the day's log-- and trying her damnest to be impartial when describing the details of Kemekin's magical "seizure"-- answered with a short, "Four days now."

Elan crossed his arms, leaning against the door to the storage closet. He watched the healer closely-- she wasn't acting like herself. His gaze swept slowly over to Conall, more specifically to the discoloration on his face. If he had been here for four days...
"Why haven't you healed his bruises?"

Ellie paused at the sudden question. After a few moments she continued her log, glancing up at the werewolf as she finished. "The bruising," she insisted gently, "was superficial. It wasn't physical force that rendered him comatose."

Elan stared at her, disbelief etched upon his handsome features. He thought immediately of the sleeping spell the healer had just placed upon Kemekin. No, it wouldn't have been a physical force. There was no way in hell that Elliestraaeln could muster enough force to knock someone unconscious-- and as soon as this crossed his mind, Elan was certain she had had something (or everything) to do with the accident.

Dubhiarr kept her eyes on Conall's still face, her ears catching Elan and Ellie's every word. She didn't have the whole story either, but she knew enough about Conall and his... tendencies... to know that Ellie's motivation for knocking him out--physically or otherwise--could only have resulted from a serious threat. Dubhiarr was infinitely grateful that Ellie had managed to defend herself without getting hurt herself.
"How long do you think he'll be out for?"

"I don't know," Ellie confessed. Not long enough.
She walked up to the curtain and tugged it shut, completely concealing Conall and the bed upon which he rested.

Dubhiarr turned away from Conall's cot and gazed quietly at Kemekin's unmoving form. At least in sleep he wasn't shaking or hurting. Guilt still coursed through Dubhiarr like liquid lead, weighing her down.
"I'm really sorry," she told Ellie, for what felt like the dozenth time.

Ellie turned to face the mage, her look softening. "It wasn't your fault," she said. She squeezed Dubhiarr's shoulder and smiled. "That's why he's here-- to learn to control his magic so that this can't happen again."
With an arm around her shoulders, Ellie led Dubhiarr to sit on the bed next to Kemekin's. "He'll be fine by morning, I promise."

Dubhiarr sat down on the bed, still looking over at Kemekin. She still detested the boy for getting his hands all over Nina at every opportunity, but for the moment she worried more about his well-being... and Nina's. What if this happened again when Nina was close to him? What if he hurt her?
All the more reason to forbid their relationship, her conscience advised her.
She frowned... maybe her conscience was right. Maybe she had been right, for the wrong reasons. Whatever the case, Dubhiarr decided to make it quite plain to Nina that a close personal relationship with Kemekin was a really bad idea at this point. She stood up, turning to the others.
"I'm going to go find Nina... she should know what's happened or she'll worry herself sick about Kemekin. Thanks for your help, Elan." Smiling at both friends, she slipped softly out of the room and headed back to her dorm. Nina was probably there already... she hoped.
