Dubhiarr nodded slowly. "Well... Nina seems to trust you. I guess I should have a little more faith in her. And in you," she added, with a small smile.
She leaned over toward him, extending a hand. "What do you say we start fresh and put the past behind us?"

Kemekin mirrored her smile, leaning as well and shaking her offered hand. "Please and thank you," he said, nodding. He sat back, waving at Dubhiarr, chuckling slightly now. "Hi, I'm Kemekin. I have no jackassery filter but I'm quite enjoyable to be around if you can stand me. It's nice to meet you."

Dubhiarr couldn't help but laugh as she shook his hand. "Hi, I'm Meriel, known to the populus as Dubhiarr or Du. I'm apparently quite delicious." She gestured to the scars on her neck and grinned. "Nice to meet you, Kemekin."

Ian found himself dozing in and out of consciousness during this entire exchange. It wasn't that he was bored or tired, merely that he was comfortable in the bed. He found himself thinking a lot about his life - reexamining it. The incident with Conall had dredged up some... unpleasant memories. Memories he would rather forget.
Of course Conall's mind would have showed him Dylan's mother. It was natural - the memory he buried the deepest, tried the hardest to forget. At the time, he had prayed she was a hallucination - not real, a figment of Ian's imagination, a manifestation of Ian's guilt. But she was real, and she was angry, and she had screamed at him with the fury only a mother who has lost her two greatest loves can manage. Only fate had stopped her from ripping him apart.
He turned his head and glanced over at the others in the sick bay. How many of them were like him? Outcasts, freaks, monsters. The rejected. The lost. The abandoned. How many had horrible pasts, did horrible things? How many, like Ian, were trying to hide it deep inside and go on with their lives?
He lay there on the bed, not even listening to the conversation around him. And suddenly the reality of it hit him. Dunehelden was real, not an illusion, and it was where Ian belonged. And as he realized this, his eyes moistened, and a few tears slid down his face and onto the pillow. He turned over, praying no one had noticed. The last thing he wanted was to distract the other students from whatever they were doing.

A little while later Nina approached the door to the Sick Bay once again. Between she and Stephen, they had ham and potatoes for Ian, a turkey BLT for Dubhiarr, water for everyone (including Aramis-- the boy hadn't looked so well on Nina's way out), and soup for Kemekin.

Stephen paused just outside of the door, turning to Nina and looking down at her in concern.
"Are you sure you're okay now?" he asked softly. "I mean... with what's been on your mind?" He didn't want to see her break down again, especially not in front of everyone else.

Nina glanced up at him with a smile, her response being a flat but nonetheless humored, "Ian wants his ham, Steph."
With that she pushed the door open with her foot, saying for the others to hear, "We come bearing nourishment!"

Ian sat up in his bed, his dark thoughts of a horrible past being washed away by the sweet smell of the mess hall's ham. He smiled at the sight of the two other students holding the food.
"Thank you!" He said, a bit louder than he usually did. "I... er... I thought I was going to... uh... you know... starve..."

"Oh, ye of little faith!" Stephen replied with a look of mock disappointment. He grinned as he crouched down slightly, allowing Ian to take a plate of ham and potatoes and a glass of water from the tray he was holding. Another glass of water and Dubhiarr's sandwich took up the rest of the tray.

Ian took the plate of Ham and some water. He didn't speak for a long time. He just sat there, eating his food slowly, taking one bite at a time. He savored the flavors. In all reality, Ian knew that he shouldn't be alive. After all, he's just been face to face with a vampire.
Nothing could compare to a first meal just after escaping death. Especially the ham from the mess hall. That stuff was just good.

Stephen smiled as he moved to Dubhiarr's bed, allowing her to take her sandwich and water. He shot a discreet glance at the vase of flowers--she hadn't noticed what he had given her yet. Oh well. She would eventually.
He sat down on a nearby empty cot, watching the others in silence. He hadn't brought a glass of blood for himself, not wanting to bother anyone with the smell of it. Now he started to regret it, feeling how dry his throat was.

Dubhiarr looked up and caught Stephen's eye, smiling over at him. She wondered what would have happened if Stephen had been the one to fight Conall... A mental image of Stephen and Haneul fighting the professor together arose in her mind, and she stifled a laugh. They inevitably would have argued over which of them had the right to finish him off.
She took a small bite of her sandwich, her eyes wandering over to Nina. How must she feel, seeing her roommate and her... was boyfriend the right word? ...lying side by side in the sick bay, and she being unable to do anything about it? Dubhiarr made a mental note to arrange a heart to heart with Nina as soon as she got out of the sick bay.

Nina gave Aramis his glass of water, giving the boy a pat on the shoulder before she moved to sit on the edge of Kemekin's bed. She passed the tray to him with a soft smile, ignoring any protest he would have made against being brought food that he hadn't asked for.
She would have brought something for Aramis as well, but she had a feeling that anything he ingested would be coming back to say hello all too soon.
Nina looked up, caught Dubhiarr's gaze, and smiled.

"Right as rain," Nina insisted, pulling her knees of her to her chest and tipping her head to one side. "I should be the one asking that, anyway. Are you doing okay?"

Dubhiarr chewed her lip a little. "I'm... not sure, to be honest." She met Nina's eyes, wondering how best to phrase what she was feeling, and coming up blank. Her shoulders slumped a little as she sighed. "I just... have a lot on my mind right now."

Nina frowned. "I'm sorry," she said. She had the sudden thought of constructing a massive reincarnation of the blanket-fort here in the sick bay (hell, there were supplies galore) but the idea of a fort reminded her of the one that had been in their dorm room... which led to the deconstruction of that fort, and hitting Dubhiarr, and the fight, and
Nina blinked and pursed her lips slightly. Her gaze slid around the room, from Dubhiarr to Stephen to Kemekin and Aramis and Ian. She settled for leaning her head back and tracing the grain of the ceiling with her eyes. Something was up with her roommate, and Nina couldn't help but feel that there would be a serious discussion later. Not wanting to dwell upon it, she let her thoughts wonder. There was a flower in the vase next to Dubhiarr's bed that hadn't been there before-- where had that come from?

Dubhiarr leaned over to bury her nose in the bouquet of irises that Professor Harrows had so thoughtfully given her, pulling away after a moment and wrinkling her nose in confusion. One of the flowers was obviously fake, clothy and scentless. She poked around in the vase and pulled it out, staring at it: a purple rose.
Her mind drifted back to a February not long ago, where a flower just like this had been hidden in an anonymous gift. That gift had been followed by another and another, all clearly coming from the same person. The same mysterious admirer. He had left another token of his affection, but she was no closer to figuring out who he really was.
She sat back, considering what she knew. Her admirer was obviously male. There were four males in this room, one of whom had a crush on Nina, one of whom was a friend and two of whom were total strangers. There was also one tiny ninja named Nina, who might have sneaked it in on behalf of someone else...
"You wouldn't happen to know anything about this, would you, Nina?" she asked, her gaze sliding over to her roommate again.

Nina kept her head tilted back to turned her eyes upon her roommate, a grin tugging at one corner of her mouth. She had not, of course, had anything to do with the rose, having in fact just been pondering about it herself.
But the opportunity for fun was more appealing.
"You'd like to know, wouldn't you Du?" she teased, tucking her heir behind both ears.

Dubhiarr frowned, unable to decide whether Nina was teasing or not. "Don't tease me, Nina, please. I'm recovering from being nearly eaten by a psycho creeper. Don't make me think too much right now, okay?"

Nina stuck out her tongue. So much for fun.
"No hun, I don't know anything about it. S'matter of fact--" oh, she was starting to talk like Kemekin-- "I was just wondering about it when you'd asked me."

"Hmm."
Dubhiarr cast her gaze around the room again, no less confused than before. Her eyes swept over everyone in the room, searching their faces. She looked down at the rose, turning it over in her hands, looking for something else to indicate the identity of its giver. Nothing.

Stephen sat quietly, watching Dubhiarr with a quiet smile. She was still baffled about the rose. Unfortunately, now didn't seem like the opportune time to clue her in. He remained where he was, making no commentary, his good eye tracking her every movement--in a non-stalker-ish way, thanks very much--to make sure she was really okay.
