A large bird sat on the wall seperating the grounds of Dunehelden from what was outside them.
He stared into the distance, towards the school, and waited.

Rivienne leaned against the wall almost casually, drawing her sword and glancing in the reflection at the the bird perched on the wall. For a moment, she let her gaze sweep onward, vigilantly scoping out the rest of the grounds. The sun had long since sunk out of sight behind the endless forest, lingering just above the horizon and leaving the sky glowing faintly orange. It was almost curfew: by nightfall, students were to be within the building unless accompanied by a professor. Though the students were ignorant of any reasoning behind this (they were used to arbitrary rules set by the headmaster), Rivienne was perfectly aware of why.
Rivienne gazed out at the castle and said, seemingly, to no one in particular, "How much longer do you think we'll be able keep the students from knowing?" Rivienne glanced once more at the reflection in her sword.

The bird tilted its head at her.
"Surprised if some haven't come close already," he spoke softly. "Though prediction is not my greatest strength."

"Some have, I believe," she said lowly, sliding the sword back into its sheath, content that, at least for now, they were safe. "The boy Lhachlhass. You know of him, I trust?" She glanced sideways at the bird, straining her eyes a bit to see him. "You know the claims he has made?"

He picked at a feather and changed into a man, still perched on the wall. It was still awkward to speak outside this form.
"I spoke to him," he nearly sighed. "On the day your boy tried to save the wolf."

"What do you make of his claims?" she asked, watching as a group of girls in Sophie's year shuffled inside. "The headmaster doesn't believe him. I'm skeptical myself."
She turned slightly to look up at the man.

"Has his brother arrived yet?" he said, instead of answering.

"I believe so," she replied coolly, somewhat accustomed to this treatment. Of course she would not get a direct answer.

"Ask him, then." Michael grinned. Given the situation, he felt weighing in would defeat any point he wanted to make.
"They're already preparing for the equinox. They're even considering inviting some of you."

"Are they?" she asked, her surprise evident in her tone. She was quiet for a moment.
"They've spoken to you, then? The Seelie or the Unseelie?" She had many questions that she was eager to ask, but asking them all at once would do her no good.

"They speak around me; they knew where it would follow to." He grimaced. "They are in more competition than usual. This may be related."
He paused and scratched his nose. "Do you know what an 'Ed Wood' is?"

"An 'Ed Wood'?" she repeated distantly. "I likely should, but I can't recall at the moment. I assume it's important?"

He sighed. "No; just curious."
"Are things working well on your end?"

"Fairly so," she replied. "Freshmen are always an interesting bunch. What they lack in ability they more than make up in enthusiasm. If I can keep them from hacking off their own limbs, I think they will turn out well."
She was quiet for a moment. "No doubt you know that my sons' birthday falls on the night the Winter Court gains power?"

"I had wondered if there was some meaning to that, once I saw them," he grinned. "Perhaps the gods' warning to those in their path."
"You are afraid of some convergence?"

Rivienne smiled. "Yes, I suppose you could say that."
Rivienne glanced up at the sky, watching as the duck slowly dissolved into night. "Do you believe we should open relations with the Forest Dwellers?" she asked. "The headmaster does not, but I believe that, in this, she may be short-sighted. We have reason to believe Mortale has been dealing openly with the Unseelie for sometime, though the Seelie are doubtless more wary of him."

A rough sound that wasn't quite a snarl came from his throat. "I doubt that man can hold their attention for long."
"I think 'relations' have already been opened. Whether you wish to participate in them is a different, and important, question."

Rivienne deliberated. "I personally believe the headmaster would be wise to take advantage of our opportunity, and that there are many among us who would benefit from it, herself included."
Rivienne seemed to hear something and glanced to the side, then, seeing nothing, straightened herself and held one hand on her sword. "However, whatever my feelings are, I will follow the headmaster's orders." Rivienne paused, and with quiet emphasis stated, "Unfortunately, it seems that something drastic would need to occur in order for her to change her mind."

"Is that a statement or a challenge?" Michael asked curiously. "My ears grow older, and my patience thin."

Rivienne grinned. "I'm only making an observation, though if you would like to take it as a challenge, I don't suppose there is anything I can do to stop you. And certainly someone needs to bring her to her senses."

He snorted.
"If I think of anything, I'll speak to Smoke about it."

Rivienne smiled. "In the meantime, I suppose we'll just have to keep an eye out for anything hazardous. And I will try to find out a bit more about our peculiar little freshman and his brother."
She glanced up. "Was there anything else you wanted to speak to me about?"
