Ian had tried, he really had. But mage coursework required books, and books that he could only get in the library. So that is how Ian wound up walking through the door of the library and praying this "psycho" librarian wasn't anywhere close to where he needed to go. Fable, or whatever his name was, did not sound like someone Ian wanted to meet in a dark alley, or even in broad sunlight in the middle of a field of flowers.
Gritting his teeth, Ian set off down the rows of books, looking for the spellbooks he needed. Get in, get out, no trouble. Ian made a mental note to actually take Seele up on her offer next time he needed to go in here. This library seriously gave him the creeps...

"Grubby little mongrels... no right to take away my iguana... and he was going to make such nice jerky, too..."
The beast of a librarian waddled heavily through the bookshelves, grumbling aloud to himself about an issue that had taken place at least a semester ago. It would have been such a tasty little treat...
A few Academy students were loitering in the nonfiction section. He flapped them away with a growl and a few well-placed curse words, making a wide turn and changing up his direction. He saw an unfamiliar face near the spellbooks. Jutting out his lower jaw, Fable decided to investigate.

Zephyros had been on the edge of the group that Fable tried to chase out, except he knew how to ignore the librarian. He followed, keeping the biography he needed for class under his arm. Fable must have noticed something to cause that expression. He smirked, still following but keeping well out of Fable's notice.

Ian scanned the titles of the spellbooks. He was looking for books on illusions. According to his teacher, that was what he needed to read up on. Finally finding a book that looked promising, Ian pulled it off the shelf and scanned the contents. Yup, this was the book he was looking for. Ian turned his attention back to the shelf. He had found one book without running into that librarian... things were going well.
When Ian heard something moving behind him, he assumed that it was another student looking for a book. When he heard some sort of muttering, he began to have doubts about that. And when he started feeling heavy breathing on the back of his neck, his heart nearly stopped. Taking a deep breath, Ian turned slowly and came face to face with the most hideous face he had ever seen.

Fable's eyes looked down upon the thin figure. "You have ten seconds to finish," he grumbled, "and get out of my library." Stooping more than usual, he added right to his face, "and I've started the count already."

Zephyros groaned. First, he would see how the new student took it. If he needed saving, he would hop in. What was it with him and runningi into these University students? He smiled at the thought of the one he had met recently, but kept his attention on the interaction of Fable and the stranger. Over the edge of a book he'd randomly pulled off the shelf. He actually started to read it and leaned lightly again the bookcase, still watching what was going on but actually reading the book too.

Ian could have sworn his heart stopped. His entire body seemed to shut down. "Ah... I... uh... um..." His vocal cords stopped working as his body started to freeze up in fear. He managed to squeak out "Spell... books...?" Before his voice gave out completely. He flattened himself against the bookcase and tried to will his body to dissolve into it.
Whatever magic Ian possessed, however, did not allow him to walk through walls. And so Ian remained face to face with the scariest person he had ever met, and if this librarian remained in front of Ian, he was probably going to pass out...

Zephyros sighed when he saw the boy try to fall through the bookcase. He stepped forward, clearing his throat loudly. "Hey, Fable... There's this book I'm looking for, and you always seem to change the filing system. I want out of here as soon as possible, right? So where did you hide The Seer's Vision by Kelan Dorian?"

Fable whirled upon the speaker, his expression becoming less unruly but no less ugly by degrees. He pointed to the far corner of the library, then, as if thinking better of it, trouped off in that direction, seeming to have forgotten about Ian.

Zephyros grinned at Fable's back, then turned that grin to Ian. "Boy, he got you cornered good. What other books did you need? I know where that book is, he obviously has forgotten and it's going to take a bit for him to remember that I still have it checked out," he chuckled. "I'm Zeph."

It took Ian a few seconds to regain feeling in his limbs and mouth. His heart was still racing at probably unhealthy levels and he was aware that he was ghostly white. However, he willed his mouth to form words in the direction of the younger boy who had saved him from the librarian.
"...thanks... thanks a lot..." He could form any more words, and slumped to the floor at the base of the bookcase, breathing heavily.

Zeph looked at him with concern and knelt next to him. "Hey, you alright? Do you need something?"
Jeeze, something was wrong here. He looked closely at Ian's face, his head turned to the side to get a better look. "Zeus, you're pale as death. He didn't get you that badly, did he?"

"...I could use some water..." Ian tried to pull himself to his feet, but his legs weren't working properly. "I'll get some later... I still need a few more books. I'm... my name is Ian. I'm a late transfer..."

"I see. What books? I'll help you find them so you can get that water. Besides, chances are I read them. You're a mage, right? Something about you kinda screams magic," Zeph offered him his hand. "Nice to meet you, Ian."

Ian decided to take that as a compliment. "Uh... yeah. I'm a mage, or so they tell me. Nice to meet you to. Apparently I'm good at illusions or something like that... speaking of which..." He listed off all the books he needed. When he was finished, he managed to pull himself to his feet and brushed himself off with shaking hands.

Zephyros nodded and helped him find the books, "Ah, those books. I only glanced through them. I'm a wind mage. Like, I could tear this library apart without a thought if I wanted to. Anyway, I'm half-afraid Fable might come back and yell at me for lying to him, so let's hurry. I hate dealing with him."

Once the two had managed to locate all the books Ian needed, he turned and smiled at Zephyros. "Thanks for the... help with Fable. And the books. I'll see you around, I guess."

Zeph nodded, still grinning. "Probably. Try not to come alone next time, huh? Fable's messed up, and the only thing that works is seriously standing up to him, or distracting him. At the moment... new face means fresh meat. He'll target you like no tomorrow."

Ian nodded. "Thanks for the warning, Zephyros. I'll...uh... be going now. Got a lot of studying to do." With that, Ian turned and walked out of the library. He was already rehearsing his "please come to the library with me" speech for Liam or Seele in his head...
Didn't want a repeat of what just happened...
This place was HIGHLY unusual...

Zephyros watched him go, smirking a little. Poor guy, obviously not ready for Fable. He grinned, then looked around. Should probably beat it before Fable came back angry that he'd sent him after a book that wasn't even in the library. He made sure he had the books he wanted and headed out. Hopefully Ian would be more careful later.
