Maleko wheeled along the corridor, inexplicably bored and with nothing to do. He had no assignments to work on. Fable was acting more pissy than usual—that was enough to keep him out of the library. What was worse, it was too chilly outside to go swimming. His mind elsewhere, he continued on through the castle. It was exercise, at least.
He was just coming up to the student lounge when someone emerged from it. Maleko recognized the boy as one of the students Kazari had roughed up for harassing him. The student grinned at Maleko now, emphasizing each step he took as he approached the wheelchair.
“Where’s your bodyguard?” the student asked, the malice in his voice none too subtle.
Maleko frowned. “I don’t want trouble. Just leave me alone.” It was times like these he wished he could stand. He would have far less trouble with his peers if he had full use of his height, but as it were, the other student had the advantage. He smirked at Maleko, his expression a clear “oh, but I do want trouble!”

Kemekin brushed his hair out of his eyes and rounded the corner towards the student lounge. There was some sort of standoff happening, between a junior and a dark-skinned young man that Kemekin recognized to be a friend of Nina’s. He was planning to just pass by, mind his own business, and slip into the student lounge. That is, until he heard a few choice words coming from the standing student.
“Hey,” Kemekin reached the pair and placed himself alongside them, ready to step between them if necessary. “What’s all this?”

The student gave Kemekin a once-over and sneered. This was the Healer’s nephew. No one else had eyes that color. “Nothing of your business, Evans-Barros,” he told the lad. He gave Maleko a deft swat to the ear, adding, “Right, Maleko? Just talk between friends.”
Maleko glared at the young man and swatted his hand away. “Back off. I’m serious.” He started to wheel past him and felt a violent jerk as the boy stomped down on his wheel breaks, locking them in place.

Kemekin frowned and gave the antagonizer a shove, unlocking Maleko's wheels with the toe of his shoe. To the other student, he said, "What kind of reason would you have to do that? Quit being a dousche and walk away, man."

Maleko was torn between feeling grateful for the intervention or annoyed for being patronized. He wheeled a few yards away and turned back to face the two males. The Healer's nephew looked the same age as the other student, though he had been told that Kemekin was younger.
The other student didn't care for details. He had been pushed and was going to push back. He came back at Kemekin with a sudden force and reared back for a punch that connected with the boy's mouth.

Kemekin grunted and jerked back, tasting blood. His lip was probably busted. And he wasn't supposed to get into fights. More than one person would chew him out if he did.
But hey, now it was technically self-defense.
Kemekin ducked the next blow and extended his elbow outwards, bracing his forearm with the other hand so as to put that much more force behind a hit the boy's solar plexus. Kemekin didn't give him time to back away before slapping a hand to the boy's chest and forcing all feeling from the boy's legs.
"Sit," Kemekin barked, crossing his arms. "Stay."

Maleko frowned up at Kemekin. "That wasn't necessary," he said. "You'll probably get in trouble now, and you could've just walked away." He wheeled away then, not wanting to bother with Kemekin.
From the floor, the antagonistic student glared. "You hit like a girl," he wheezed. A lie. His chest was killing him.

"I'll take it," was Kemekin's retort. He grinned. "I'd much rather go toe-to-toe with another dude than fight with some of the girls I know." With that he stepped over the boy, pushing open the door to the student lounge.

On the opposite side of the lounge, Nina and Jaebi sat side-by-side on one of the couches, pouring over a large sketchpad. Between them, Jaebi had set his iPod, volume on full blast. Which would explain why neither of the two had heard the goings-on outside.
"Okay," Nina was saying, "what you've done there is set the nose too high up. It's going to look like this in profile..." She leaned over Jaebi's knees to reach his side of the paper, erasing something he had drawn and fixing it with a few quick strokes of her pencil. "See? The browbone divets there, and that's where the bridge of the nose starts."

Jaebi scratched the side of his head, leaning back slightly to allow for Nina's reach. Only recently had he been able to bring himself to spend time with her without freezing up and making any excuse to leave. Of course, that might have had something to with with the fact that, the last time he had slipped away when she had tried to talk to him, he had glanced back-- something he normally didn't do. The sadness he had seen on her face actually hurt him. It had not occurred to him until that moment that Nina had really wanted to become his friend.
Well, he was working on it. He found he liked Nina's company.
He looked down at his fixed profile drawing and cocked his head from one side to the other. "Oh... then why does the nose curve like--" He paused, noticing Kemekin then.

Nina noticed Jaebi's pause, glanced at him, and followed his gaze to Kemekin, who still stood by the doorway. "Oh man!" she gasped, seeing his busted lip. She was on her feet in an instant. "What did you do?"

Kemekin grinned at her, feeling uncharacteristically sheepish. "There was a little.... outside... yeah." He ran one hand through his hair and shrugged. He strode towards Nina with an assurance of, "It was nothing bad."

"Nothing bad?" Nine closed the distance between them in a few quick bounds, stopping just in front of Kemekin and standing on her toes to inspect his lip.

Ever playful, Kemekin made a face and craned his head away, out of her reach. His sheepish grin widened to one of Cheshire proportions. The movement made his lip sting.

Nina had to actually stand en pointe to reach Kemekin. She took his chin in her surprisingly strong grip and steered his face down to hers. "That looks like it hurt, Kem. Again, what did you do?"
With her thumb, she swiped a bit a just-dried blood from his lip.

Kemekin wrapped one arm around the blond's waist and pulled her closer to him, leaning down until their noses touched. "Not important," he crooned. Then, teasingly, "But it does hurt." With his other hand, he wound his fingers into the girl's soft hair. "Make it feel better, Nina?"

Jaebi felt his face heating up. Really, Kemekin? Really? It was ridiculous how his friend could go from goofy to suave in a split second. There were times when Jaebi honestly couldn't decide between smacking Kemekin and taking notes.
"Not while I'm in the room," he pleaded.

Kemekin grinned, unwilling to tear his gaze from Nina's for longer than was necessary to raise an eyebrow in his friend's direction. "Close your eyes then, Jae," he insisted, chuckling. A breath later and he was devoting his attentions --quite vehemently-- to the little mage in his arms.

Color rose in Jaebi's cheeks and he suddenly found the sketches on the table in front of him utterly fascinating. The sketches, at least, would never start making out while he was less than two yards away. Jaebi waited patiently for what he felt was an appropriate time to pass, and cleared his throat pointedly.
"Still here," he announced, refusing to focus on anything but the paper.
