Jason slipped into an empty classroom, looking around for the desk he had been sitting in the period before. Aha--his jacket was still there, draped over the back of his chair. He hurried over to retrieve it, shrugging it on and turning to leave when he spotted someone in the doorway. A very familiar someone.
"Hey, Jonathan," he smiled. "Good to see you again. What brings you here?"

Jonathan was doing that thing that really annoyed him again. That thinking thing. The recent events had put his mind in a state of confusion - a place that Jonathan did not want his mind to be. So he had done the thing that he did when things confused him; he sought out Jason, and was very lucky to have found him alone.
"I just wanted to say something... the last few days have got me thinking..." Jonathan stepped into the room hesitantly, his heart racing. This was very out of character for him.

"Oh...?" Jason's eyebrows lifted slightly in confusion as he took a step toward Jonathan. "Go on... what's on your mind?"

"I wanted to thank you, I suppose." Jonathan said slowly, choosing his words carefully. "Some of the things that are happening... they've made me realize that you're the only person around this school who treats me with anything like respect or friendship. So... thank you. That's all I wanted to say."
Damn, that was awkward.

Jason's face relaxed into a smile of gratitude at Jonathan's words.
"That's really sweet, Jonathan... I appreciate that. And you're very welcome. You know you can come to me for anything, right? If you need to talk about anything, or vent, or if you just need someone to be with. That's what friends are for."

"Yeah..." Jonathan said softly. "Friends. Are we friends? Is this what having a friend feels like?"

Jason nodded, his smile widening. "I very much think so." He reached out and put a hand on Jonathan's shoulder, squeezing it gently. "And I'm happy about it."

Jonathan smiled a bit himself and raised his own hand slowly. He placed it on Jason's shoulder just like Jason's hand was on his, looking into the boy's eyes. "I am too. Surprisingly..."

Jason laughed, and slowly stepped a little closer to Jonathan, hugging him gently. "Just so you know, I've forgiven you about the incident with my paints. That's another really good thing to learn. It means acknowledging what people have done to upset you, and then forgetting about it so you can move on."

Zeph played with the small box in his hand, looking at the tag. He'd talked a friend into writing it for him, since his handwriting when small was rather... illegible. Of course, he was going to hand it to Jason which made it pointless, but he felt it was an important detail.
He'd been unable to find Jason elsewhere... and asking around, had heard that Jason was headed this way. Looking in each room as he passed it, Zeph thought he heard Jason's voice. He didn't understand what was said, but that wasn't really important anyway. He knew where Jason was. Hurrying forward, he stepped into the room with the little box behind his back.
Taking a breath, he looked at Jason... and choked. Jason... Jonathan... were hugging? Bu-but... after all Jonathan had done and... He couldn't grasp it, but he did know this feeling. This bleeding agony. The small gift box fell from his nerveless fingers and he staggered back, his voice weak.
"Jason..."
Before anyone could react, he turned and ran back the way he had come, stumbling blindly as he fought his tears viciously. He wouldn't cry in the halls; that could wait until he could lock himself in his room.

Jason looked up at the voice, peering around Jonathan's body--he was too tall for Jason to see over his shoulder--just in time to see Zeph vanishing down the hallway. He stepped back from Jonathan, wondering what on earth had just happened... what Zeph thought had happened. Did Zeph think he was cheating? With Jonathan? He would never betray Zeph like that! This was not going to end well... he had to run after Zeph, find him, explain...
"I have to go," he told Jonathan quickly, his throat tight. "I'm really sorry, I'll explain later... I really need to go."
He ducked around Jonathan and hurried to the door, tripping and almost falling over something small on the floor. Steadying himself, he bent down and picked it up. It was a small box, lovingly wrapped, with a tag addressed to him. Zeph must have dropped it when he ran, Jason realized, his eyes threatening to fill with tears. He clutched the box tightly in his hand, turning back to Jonathan.
"I'm really sorry," he repeated, then turned and hurried down the hall, hoping against hope that he would find Zeph... and that Zeph would be willing to listen to him.

Jonathan stared blankly at the door. His brain was working overtime - attempting to process what he had just seen. Slowly, he was starting to make sense of what just happened. Rage and tears welled up inside him. The rage came out first, as Jonathan aimed a savage kick at a nearby desk. The wood splintered and the desk fell away from the chair. "FUCK!" He screamed. "God FUCKING dammit." Another kick sent the trashcan flying into the blackboard. "I hate this! I FUCKING HATE THIS!" Jason, kind Jason, wonderful Jason, Jason who was nice to Jonathan and was his friend was outside crying because of of Jonathan's mere existence. The tears now came out, pouring down Jonathan's face, he collapsed to the ground, howling in his emotional pain. "Why me? Why DO I EXIST?" He screamed at the ceiling. "WHY DO I KEEP HURTING GOOD PEOPLE?" After that exclamation, Jonathan collapsed to the floor. Minutes passed by, and even though the tears dried up, Jonathan remained on the floor, unable and unwilling to pick himself up. Ian burst into the room. He was out of breath from sprinting, and his face was still bright red. His shaking hands had not stopped; in fact, they had gotten worse. Ian did not get angry often, but when he did, he got REALLY angry.
Jonathan was sprawled out on the floor. For a moment, Ian hesitated. However, the mental image of a crushed Zeph overruled the image of a crushed Jonathan. Besides, Jonathan didn't have feelings, at least not ones that could be crushed.
"What," Ian said harshly, MUCH more harshly than he had expected, "the HELL DID YOU DO?"

Jonathan looked up. Standing at the door was the last person he wanted to see at this moment. He raised himself off the ground and approached Ian, towering over him.
"I want you to leave." Jonathan said menacingly. "Now. Before you get hurt."

Jonathan was a scary person. Ian knew that he probably would not win this argument if it got physical. Nevertheless, he stood his ground. He was here to make Jonathan see that what he had done was wrong. And that had to be done.
"I don't know what happened." Ian said quickly, his voice hard and sharp. "But sneaking around with Jason was wrong. You hurt Zeph and you hurt him bad. I don't know if he'll ever be able to snap out of this one. And your foolish impulses probably hurt Jason too-"

Something inside Jonathan snapped.
His foot was out from under him before he could realize he was reacting, but he didn't care. His heel caught Ian in the side, and his leg jabbed outwards. Ian flew to the side and hit one of the desks, sending both it and him crashing to the floor. Before Ian could react, Jonathan was standing over him. He reached down and grabbed Ian's collar, hoisting him up. Then he threw him by the shirt. Ian flew a few feet and crashed into the teacher's desk. A crack appeared in the wood, and blood splattered from Ian's face.
Jonathan was across the room in a second. His balled up fist connected with Ian's nose, and he felt it shatter. His other fist came down on Ian's chest. Then his fists were all over Ian's body. By the time Jonathan had finished, Ian's skin was almost completely black and blue. The boy was breathing heavily and coughing periodically.
Jonathan stood, panting. "Fuck you." He said softly, then turned and fled.

Aramis watched Jonathan run from the classroom, confused. He was on his way to his dorm... but the sight of blood on Jonathan's fist and clothes had him concerned. Going to the room Jonathan fled, he looked at the destruction and gasped. "Dear God! Ian!"
Putting his books quickly on a nearby desk, he ran and knelt beside the badly beaten boy, taking a deep breath. Ian needed some healing now, whether or not the older mage would agree with Aramis using magic outside of class or not. And to heal, Aramis had to be calm... He closed his eyes and took another deep breath, letting it out slowly. Carefully, he started running his fingers along Ian's body, looking both literally and magically for the worst of his injuries.

Ian lay on the floor, pain coursing through his body in place of blood. Something needed to fill his veins, he supposed, since his blood seemed to be running low. He was dizzy, he was thirsty, and he was in a lot of pain. And the pain. That seemed to be everything, actually. He coughed a very painful cough and felt a little blood leak out of his mouth, joining the river pouring from his nose.
He tried to say words, but what came out was a low groan. Okay, so no words. Ian simply lay back and allowed Aramis to search him for the worst of the wounds, inwardly swearing to never tell Natalie about this.

Aramis closed his eyes. First Ian's ribs needed to be straightened, it looked like. That took but a moment, and then he forced them to heal enough to stay where they belonged. He put a hand lightly on Ian's chest, healing the minor damage the broken ribs had done to Ian's lungs so he could breathe with a bit less pain, then moved to stop the bleeding in his nose. First make it so the boy could breathe... then worry about moving.
Aramis moved on to the other broken bones, setting them with quick jerks that he magically numbed, then forcing them to heal enough to stay where he put them. He couldn't heal them completely; he didn't have the strength to do that for every bone Jonathan had broken in the older boy, and getting them to stay where they belonged was more important. Finally, he finished there and moved on to the worst of the soft-tissue damage, despite the exhaustion that was quickly overtaking him. The bruises on Ian's skin faded a little, and the dizziness disappeared when Aramis put his fingertips on Ian's temples.
Aramis leaned back on his heels, his purple eyes slowly closing. He was trembling, but Ian was in pretty good shape now, considering. Moving to lean against a wall, Aramis sat carefully, breathing slowly. He hurt now... everywhere he'd healed Ian seemed to hurt on him now, and that meant just about every inch of skin, as well as a few internal inches. He coughed weakly, his eyes still closed.

The pain was not gone. It was merely lessened, but Ian was grateful for even that. He sat up, leaning against the broken teacher's desk for support, attempting to steady his breathing.
"Thank you..." He said softly. "Thank you. Are you okay?"

Aramis made a soft noise, attempting to nod. Oooh, he hurt. He really hurt. How had Ian managed to remain conscious? If he was hurting this much, Ian must have hurt so much worse. He coughed again, almost expecting blood to come from his lips.

Liam poked his head curiously into the room at the sound of a familiar voice coming from inside. He gasped in shock at what he saw -- the room was trashed, desks and chairs broken and scattered. Leaning against the teacher's desk was a badly-injured Ian, and nearby was a younger boy Liam didn't recognize.
Liam hurried over to both of them, looking from one to the other. "What happened here? Can I help you somehow?"

Ian tried to stand. Blinding pain suddenly flooded into his body, and he leaned back against the desk. His throat was dry and his lips were swelling and cracked.
"Water, please..." He breathed. "The pain will go away eventually... can't let anyone else know about this..."

Aramis looked at him, "Ian... you have to go to Ellie..."
He pushed himself up, knowing his pain would fade very soon. It was just a side-effect of not being totally trained, so he ended up absorbing some of the pain into himself. "I didn't come close to completely healing you."

Liam hurried from the room once Ian spoke, coming back a few minutes later with two cups of water. He handed one to each of the boys--the younger one looked exhausted, though not injured. He hovered nearby in case he was needed for anything else. "Maybe I should go and get Miss E for you, Ian... no offense, but you look like shite. Who did that to you?"
