Ariel rested her chin in one hand, frowning slightly, then grinning as she eyed the gameboard between her and her father. She'd forgotten how good he was at chess; they were well into their third game, and he had won both of the previous ones.
Ariel picked up a white knight, holding it in the air for a few seconds as she thought some more about her move; then she lowered her hand and knocked over a black bishop, then set the fallen piece at the side of the board. Brushing a strand of hair out of her face and tucking it behind one ear, she looked up at her father with a pensive, somewhat solemn expression.
"How have you been doing lately?" she asked him. "What with everything that's been happening, we haven't seen each other much."

"I'm as well as can be expected, I think," Vincent replied slowly, "all things considered. Goodness knows last semester was horrific, but I think we're all slowly moving on. Jason and Zephyros are doing well, which is very reassuring. They had some of the worst of it," he said sadly. "Not to mention the Volkovas and Gilespis. Bless them."
He moved his queen up to attack Ariel's knight, knocking it over and setting it aside. "Check."

"Yeah," Ariel nodded sadly, her eyes distant. "Hitomi was really shaken up by Thrall's death. She seems to be doing better now, though. Life goes on, you know?" She moved her king away from her father's queen, biting the inside of her cheek a little.
"All these things that have been happening... Jason and Zeph, and now Thrall... really makes you think about how dangerous the world really is, and how fragile people are. Thrall didn't have to die. It could have been any one of us instead of him."
It could have been me, she thought with a shiver. If Korlian hadn't helped her...
But that was in the past now, and she had survived, thanks in no small part to Korlian's advice. He could just as easily have left her alone for Fae food, but he hadn't. However strained their relationship had grown since that night, she owed him that much.
No, she owed him more -- Korlian had put himself in harm's way for her during that incident with Creeps McGee. Ariel seriously doubted she would ever be able to pay him back for that -- or her father, for that matter. Or Professor Harrows. Or any of those who had been there that night.

Vincent sighed softly, seeing the darkly pensive look on his daughter's face. "You're right... it could have been any one of us. There could just as easily have been more than one funeral after Halloween. But there wasn't, and that's a reason to be thankful. Let's not linger on the shadows of the past for too long, or we might forget what the dawn looks like," he said with a soft smile.
He moved his queen, endangering Ariel's king again. "Check."

Ariel promptly moved a pawn between her king and her father's queen, though she knew she was doomed. There was only so far her king could move before it was backed into a corner.
"You're right," she nodded at her father's remark. "Let's find something happy to talk about. I know..." Her face lit up with a grin, and she leaned eagerly across the table as she spoke. "When exactly do you plan on proposing to Professor Harrows? You've had the ring for almost a month now. Christmas would have been a good time."

"I thought about it, but Christmas seemed a bit too soon," Vincent answered, calmly taking out Ariel's pawn. "I'll probably wait until her birthday. Check."
He paused, stretching out his legs under the table for a moment. "I still need to decide on how to ask the question... I want it to be special. Memorable. Unique. I have a few ideas, but I can't seem to settle on any one of them."

Ariel nodded, moving her king again. Crap -- she was definitely doomed.
"Her birthday... that's in March, right? Yeah, that sounds good. She'd love that. You could propose in her gardens, surrounded by all of her flowers when they're just starting to bud. Or!" Her grin widened. "You could act out a scene from a Shakespeare romance, or one of her favorite books. Kinda like when you proposed to Mum with that song from Phantom of the Opera. That must have been romantic."

Vincent grinned as well. "Oh, I like that! It's perfect! Ariel, you are a genius!" He cackled in glee as he moved his queen one last time, then settled back in his chair with a doubly triumphant look on his face. "Checkmate!"

Ariel laughed, toppling her king with a flick of her finger. "You're welcome. I'm sure it'll be great, whatever you decide to do. She's just as much in love with you as you are with her. I bet she'll say yes before you're even finished asking the question," she grinned. "And then you'll get to plan your wedding. That'll be exciting!"

Vincent laughed. "It will be. And if anyone messes it up, I'll serve up their liver for the wedding banquet, with fava beans and a nice chianti." He winked.
"You'll be the maid of honor, of course; that's non-negotiable. I promised you that years ago. And Natalie will be a bridesmaid, if she accepts. In that case, Ian will probably be a groomsman... but I shouldn't get ahead of myself," he chuckled. "I still have to propose, and that has to wait. Unfortunately."

Ariel giggled. "Oh, is it going to be Mr. and Mrs. Lecter? That'll look good on the invitations. You can walk up the aisle to the sound of screaming lambs -- I'm kidding!" she squeaked, leaning back in her seat as her father stood up menacingly, reaching across the table to give her a friendly cuff on the side of the head. "You started it!"
"Anyway," she grinned, starting to gather up the chess pieces, "just be patient and you'll do fine. You've got plenty of time to plan a proposal. You're brilliant and slightly mad---" she ducked another gentle blow "---I'm sure you'll think of something she's going to remember forever. In a good way. Just be yourself."

Vincent was still chuckling at the thought of a wedding based on The Silence of the Lambs as he gathered up the rest of the chess pieces and picked up the board to put it away. It was definitely an interesting idea... but not for their wedding. There was plenty of time to plan things out once they reached that point. It couldn't possibly come soon enough.
