The classroom was empty-- or rather, most of the classroom was empty-- a single lab station near the back was quite obviously in use, with several vials and steaming beakers heating over Bunsen burners next to samples of brightly-colored foliage and what looked like a bowl of bright pink tea leaves.
Akio Gussumaru worked over the table, a pair of lab goggles pushed up to his forehead making his hair stick up at crazy angles. The tea leaves were used to remedy many things-- he had decided it was time to test their limits.

After Hitoshi and Alex went to bed and the whole school slept soundly, Alyn liked to wander the halls. It was strangely peaceful late at night, and the castle seemed to hum with its own eerie lullaby. She strolled down the science hallway, her footsteps echoing softly against the stone. The flannel cuffs of her pajama pants rubbed against her ankles with each step.
She paused, the rhythm of her footsteps momentarily broken. One of the doors was slightly ajar, a faint light visible in the room. She crept up to the door, peering inside cautiously.
At first it looked like the room were empty, but far in the back corner of the room, she could see a boy bent over the lab station, tufts of orange hair sticking out at every angle. She raised an eyebrow, slipping into the room. The sweet smell of whatever he was brewing wafted through the room.
"Working on a bit of late night science homework?" she asked dryly, peering at his distorted image through a beaker.

Akio pursed his lips as he worked, responding automatically with a faked Sean Connery accent. "It's never too late for science, my dear."
Immediately after he looked up, looking surprised. "Oh!" He dropped the accent and grinned. "Hi there." He reached across the counter to grab a handful of the tea leaves and applied his mortar and pestle to them. "Not homework. Just an experiment. Would you like an overview?"

Alyn bit her lip, stifling a chuckle. He wasn't bad looking, even with his hair sticking up like that. She leaned forward against the table and shrugged. "I might as well. I don't have anything else to do."

Akio's grin widened. "Alright then, my lovely assistant." He set down the ground-up leaves. "Here, we have the Baratoge tea leaves. Good for treating stress, soreness, and various other minor ailments." He scooped the leaves into a beaker half-full of an electric-blue, bubbling liquid. The substance immediately turned green and began to hiss violently.
"I have a theory," he continued, as he stirred a white powder into the beaker, "that the natural chemicals in the leaves can be harnessed for more..." he looked up at the girl momentarily before returning his attention to the beakers. The green liquid calmed and became a foam. He blinked a few times.
"Sorry, lost my train of thought. Could you please pass me that vial?"

Alyn raised an eyebrow, but obediently picked up the vial and handed it to the boy. Baratoge tea was the sort that her parents drank sometimes. It was sweet-smelling, almost floral, her father's favorite. Though she was not much of a tea-drinker, she loved the aroma. One of her father's former classmate's sent it to them every so often.
"You're Akio, aren't you?" she asked, watching the green liquid froth up in the beaker. "From fourth period psychology?"

Akio nodded. "I am, I am," he said as he worked. "And you're Alyn." He smiled again, this time looking her in the eye.
"What are you doing up at this hour, my dear?"

She looked back up at him, her dark cheeks coloring just slightly. "I couldn't sleep," she replied simply, then smirked. "Do you always speak like you're in a James Bond movie?"

Akio chuckled. "It happens often enough," he said. "Do you always color-coordinate your pajamas with your earrings?"
"You know, these tea leaves can be used as a sleep remedy." The foam in the beaker had congealed to a floral-scented paste, which he scooped into a white plastic jar. "I can make you some if you want. My mom brings your dads leaves all the time."

Alyn gently touched her fingers to her earrings, giving Akio a slightly bemused look. It was a peculiar thing to notice, and now that it had been brought up, she couldn't help feeling a bit self-conscious that she was wandering the school in nothing but pastel colored pajamas that she had been wearing since she was thirteen.
"I suppose it can't hurt," she said, shrugging one shoulder. She didn't much care for the taste of the tea, but if it would help her sleep, it was worth a try. And, though she was less likely to admit it, she liked the idea of helping him with his experiment.

Akio handed her the jar, noticing her expression. "I wasn't implying the earring thing was weird. It's cute, actually." He started cleaning up beakers and vials, carrying things that needed rinsing over in the sink.
"You're going to smear a bit of that on the roof of your mouth," he instructed. "It should put you right to sleep, and if it works anything like the tea, it'll give you the best morning breath ever." The last half of the sentence was colored by laughter. "And if you could get back to me on how well it works... I might just have to request that you take on the role of my lovely assistant." He winked.

Alyn grinned. "I might just take you up on that," she replied.
She dipped two fingers into the jar, scooping out a bit of the paste. The pleasant aroma of it alone seem to make her feel calm and hazy, and just slightly warm. It was far stronger than the scent of the tea, and sweeter. She scraped her fingers across the roof of her mouth, cringing slightly at the taste. The texture was like petroleum jelly; the taste was much too sweet and tingled up into her nose.
She coughed, covering her mouth and setting the jar back on the table. She wrinkled her nose. "I never really cared for the taste of the tea," she commented. "I..." She gave a long yawn, then shook her head. "Mm, I think it's working already."

Akio bit his lip. "Ah..... I did say it would put you right to sleep...." He reached out and gripped Alyn's forearm to keep her steady. "Do you... ah, want help?"

"I didn't realize you were being so literal," she replied, a bit more sharply than she had intended. She tried to take a step and swayed slightly, gripping at Akio for support and nearly falling against his chest. The world swum around her just a bit, and she clutched at Akio's sleeve in attempt to get her bearings.
"The headmaster's quarters, in the top floor of the east tower," she murmured, struggling against the sudden heaviness of her eyelids. Akio was warm, and she felt like she could easily have fallen asleep on him.

"Alright." Akio shifted sideways and hefted Alyn into his arms. She smelled nice. Which didn't strike Akio as a peculiar thought on his behalf until he was out the door and carrying her into the hallway.
Oh, this should be fun to explain to the headmaster.
